The Sooners will make their way to Phoenix from various locales, after many players returned home for a few days off following Wednesday's practice.
Players had the option of leaving with an official travel party from Norman or traveling on their own.
OU practices for the first time Tuesday at 11:40 a.m. at Pinnacle High School.
•Happy homecoming: Running back Jacob Gutierrez was looking forward to another holiday celebration in San Antonio, after missing his first Christmas at home last year when the Sooners were in San Diego preparing for the Holiday Bowl.
"That was tough,” Gutierrez said.
Gutierrez missed out on the fellowship of a family that includes a brother and sister and 33 cousins in San Antonio.
And he missed the Tamale Bowl, the annual family football game.
"We split up the cousins and uncles,” Gutierrez says. "Get after it.”
Worry not, Bob Stoops, he won't make any end runs in the name of family pride.
But he is home, which is the important thing.
•Fresh legs: It's been more than two months since Adrian Peterson has had a carry in a game.
Still, Stoops doesn't expect any rust to show on his star running back.
"From spring to fall, that's about four, five, six months,” Stoops said. "He's always been OK coming out the gate.”
If anything, the time off could benefit Peterson in terms of the wear and tear typically attached to a season of work.
"You could tell running out there in practice, he's got fresh legs after all the rest he's had,” Stoops said.
Said Peterson's backup, Allen Patrick: "He looks very good, like he ain't never missed a step.”
