Tribute: Prentice Gautt
Prentice Gautt broke Oklahoma’s color barrier 50 years ago this fall, then excelled on the field and in the classroom. Here’s how the school will salute the anniversary and Gautt’s many accomplishments this fall:
Gautt’s No. 38 will “sit out” this season, with no Sooner assigned that number. The number isn’t being retired, just pulled for this season, and will be worn again in 2007.
Decals with a No. 38 will be affixed to the helmet of every Sooner, to be worn throughout this season.
On Oct. 21, for OU’s homecoming game against Colorado, Gautt’s wife Sandra and their children will join the surviving members of the 1956 national championship team in a special ceremony recognizing two significant anniversaries.
