The society, chartered in 1976, was established to promote research of family history, preserve genealogical information, and archive records for Beckham, Caddo, Comanche, Cotton, Custer, Grady, Greer, Harmon, Jackson, Jefferson, Kiowa, Stephens, Tillman and Washita counties.
The society will elect officers and provide an opportunity for attendees to brag about their research, ask questions about difficulties in research and swap information about their family history.

•The Metropolitan Library System will present "Land Runs, Lotteries and Homesteading in Oklahoma” from 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 23 at the Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library, 300 Park Ave, in Oklahoma City.
Billie Fogarty, Oklahoma Genealogical Society president, will discuss Oklahoma's unusual settlement history that runs the gamut from Indian tribes' relocation, cattle trails and railroads to European settlers, land runs and lotteries.
The seminar explores the historical background, the Homestead Act, the rectangular survey system, the land openings in Oklahoma, the process for obtaining land and the records available to find your ancestor's role in these events.

•Donna Waddle will present, "LDS Records and Family Research” from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 23 at the Oklahoma History Center, 2401 N Laird.
Waddle will demonstrate how to explore the FamilySearch Family History Library Catalog and associated Web sites, and how to search databases, locate resources, organize information and create ancestor charts.

Roy Waller, coordinator for the Genealogy Study Group, reports that researchers can access News Bank using their Metropolitan Library cards from home by logging onto the library Web site at www.metrolibrary.org. Click on the tab "databases,” then click on "newspapers.” Choices include "Newsbank — Daily Oklahoman,” "Newspaper source (EbscoHost),” "Oklahoma Electronic Archives” and "Proquest — Newspapers.” This Web site also has other databases of interest to researchers, such as "genealogy,” "history,” "Oklahoma” and "images/photos.”
