The Oklahoma Centennial Commission and sponsors dedicated on Tuesday an 11-foot-tall, 24-foot-wide lighted waterfall between the Centennial Building and the Cox Pavilion at State Fair Park.

"I think this place will be a place of destination,” said Lee Allan Smith, chairman of centennial projects and events. "I think this will end up being a good-luck pond here,” he said.

Chesapeake Energy Corp., the Freede Family, the Meinders Foundation and Jeannette and Richard Sias sponsored the project.

Tim O'Toole, president and general manager of the Oklahoma State Fair and Centennial Expo, called the waterfall "a wonderful addition” to the fair park.

"The Oklahoma Centennial Waterfall is a wonderful complement to the many new developments at the State Fair Park,” said Clayton I. Bennett, chairman of the state fair board.

At the conclusion of remarks, participants tossed silver dollars and $100 in quarters into the pool.

As darkness falls, lights go up
The waterfall's blue lights became more pronounced near dusk.

The lights, which are the same as those at the Wynn Las Vegas casino, are programmed for three "shows” but can be programmed for many more. The Color Kinetics Digital Lighting System is capable of producing millions of colors.

"Any color you can think of, we can create,” said Kelly Caviness, president of Caviness Landscape & Design, who created the waterfall. He was asked to provide a park-like atmosphere for fairgoers and others.

"It's southeastern Oklahoma — that's what it is,” Caviness said of the 70 tons of moss-covered boulders used to construct the waterfall. The familiar-looking stones were taken from near McAlester.

Trees flank the sides and back. Centennial benches will be placed around the pool.

Speakers noted the centennial didn't end in November. The commission will continue to unveil projects through June, at the end of which it will wrap up business.

Money recovered from the pool will be donated to the Children's Medical Research Institute.

My gosh, they try to improve something and it still does not please people. Our fairgounds is trying to become something we can be proud of. After all this was not built with your tax dollars. It is a gift. Accept it gracefully.

So it's just a little Northwest of your house?

Yeah Danny, go past the dump on 10th street, just ignore the funky smell. Drive past the drug dealers down in the flats as you pass by them. Continue past the trashy strip clubs on May and Reno. Look to the northwest and there is OKC's lovely fairgrounds.

Danny,Take the Turner Turnpike to I-44 west and you will go to it. Or if you take I-40 past downtown a few miles is another way perhaps if you are closer to Muskogee.

Marika, I am just happy the Arabian Nationals are in Oklahoma period. Kentucky and New Mexico really messed up because their fairgounds were terrible. Their loss is our gain. Anything positive for Oklahoma is a step forward for all of us.

I used to ride Arabians and it was very sad to see Nationals go to Tulsa. That would have just brought more money to our city. I'm all for beautifying our city. And I'll vote for the penny tax increase to get the bball team here too. I guess some people like to live without changing anything, yikes! I wonder what their lives are like.

What does need have to do with it?
It's about quality of life, and besides, it was
built with private money, so why don't you just
enjoy it......??

The events held at the State Fairgrounds bring in Millions of dollars to the state and city. We have been losing events for several years because of the shabby looking fairgrounds. While we were sleeping Tulsa has been grabing more and more of our events. We have lost the Appaloosa horse show to Jackson Ms. The Arabian National Horse show went to Tulsa. These are major events that other cities beg to have. Take a look at the improvements to the fair grounds and how it reflects on us. To be a major player we need more than a professional basketball team. Look at our city. There is building and growth every where you look. The rest of the country is going to Hell in a hand basket and for once we are moving ahead. Enjoy it.

There is not greater waste than a closed mind. As long as a mind is closed it is unreachable and unteachable. Only an open mind can learn and grow. If we give it a try we might just like it.

Well it will now be a constant contest between the Botanical Gardens, Turner Falls, and other choice sites for wedding shoots.
