Thunder hits on all cylinders in win over Sacramento Kings

This, Thunder fans, is what your team looks like when everything clicks.

Dogged defense leads to trouble-free offense. Spacing and ball movement result in uncontested shots. Energy and hustle end in a blowout.

Opening night at the Ford Center couldn’t have gone more smoothly in the Thunder’s 102-89 rout of Sacramento on Wednesday night.

When it mattered for the first time, the Thunder played like the team the outside world assumes it is — one of the fastest rising teams in the NBA and a bunch that could surprise the rest of the league with an improbable push to the postseason.

Oklahoma City never trailed against the Kings and led by as many as 23 points. Roles were played to near perfection, particularly by the starters: Russell Westbrook, Thabo Sefolosha, Kevin Durant, Jeff Green and Nenad Krstic.

The first five set the tone from the opening tip and ultimately combined for two more points than the entire Kings team.

Westbrook displayed the same confidence and control he exhibited throughout the preseason, finishing with 14 points, a career-high 13 assists and seven rebounds against just two turnovers.

Durant looked more like the leader he’s promised to be in his third season and poured in 25 points, with 11 rebounds and four assists.

Green showed off a rapidly improving shooting touch and a valuable ability to abuse bigger, slower defenders. He made four of five 3-pointers on his way to 24 points and eight rebounds.

And Krstic and Sefolosha were their usual steady selves, Krstic taking advantage of Westbrook’s playmaking to the tune of 20 points and Sefolosha being the bulldog defender he’s established himself as.

Collectively, they gave a preview of the potential the unit possesses. The Thunder only started Wednesday’s lineup 16 times last season because Krstic and Sefolosha were acquired in mid-season and injuries to Durant prevented seven more opportunities.

They went just 3-13 as a unit that spent last season searching for its rhythm. But the pieces looked much more comfortable Wednesday.

"Training camp and the preseason helped us out,” Durant said. "And just getting that bond, getting to know where guys need the ball on the floor. Guys like Thabo and Nenad have been great additions to our team. They came a little later, but we’ve been working hard and hopefully it starts to show.”

With Brooks playing just nine players, and Green and Durant receiving more than 39 minutes apiece, the Thunder needed a big game from its starting unit. They responded by out-rebounding a taller and perhaps more athletic frontline with a team effort. All five starters had five or more rebounds.

Their hustle is what stood out most. Six days after this same Kings team blew out the Thunder by 15 in its preseason finale, the Thunder made sure to give better effort Wednesday.

A third-quarter play by Russell Westbrook defined the intensity on the night. After a turnover on a inbounds pass led to a one-man breakaway for Kings rookie guard Tyreke Evans, Westbrook sprinted back and contested the dunk but fouled Evans from behind.

The Thunder was ahead 20 at that point.

"It feels good,” Green said. "Getting that first win, especially at home for the fans, it feels real good.”

"Is Berry Tramel on drugs or is he just an OKC native?"----He's just an okaysee native, most native okies all pretty much look the same, can't tell them apart....

Good one Philip. You're just too good at the internet. What's it like to "cry" a year later? I can almost see your pathetic tears from here, but I can certainly hear your cry. Keep coming around, I enjoy your pain.

Ole, Holdenville: The WNBA season just ended with Phoenix winning the title. I'm not sure when they start up again but I think it's a pretty short season (3-4 mos.) so I would think next summer.

Slim - How many times did the Thunder beat the Spurs in the playoffs?......yeah....that's what I thought. In case you didn't know, the only thing they give you a trophy for is winning in the playoffs.
Philip, Oklahoma City - Oct 29, 2009 at 12:32 pm
The Citron 2CV has two cylinders. It is a very low cost car. It doesn't even have a distributer. The spark plugs fire on the power stroke AND the exhaust stroke, (while running up and down the court).

"This, Thunder fans, is what your team looks like when everything clicks."

Not to play "Debbie downer", but this is like saying, "This, Sooner fans, is what your team looks like when everything clicks."... right after beating Idaho St. As a Kings fan, I know that they might, MIGHT be the worst team in the NBA. Don't get too excited yet. The Thunder have improved, but this should've been a very easy win for them.
Nathan, Edmond - Oct 29, 2009 at 10:38 am
with one game behind us, it appears there's a huge difference between last year and this year. hopefully, that intensity holds up throughout the season. durant is durant - a rising superstar, but i was really impressed with the supporting cast; green, westbrook, sefolosha, harden, kristic. thabo looks relentless and green looks to be a real giant killer. i hope these guys continue to gel and grow as players. if so, basketball in OKC could be real fun for the next few years.
David, Sallisaw - Oct 29, 2009 at 10:34 am

A nice start considering how last year began against Milwaukee. 11 of our first 17 games are against teams which made the playoffs last year and we'll get a better read in the next three against Detroit, Portland and the Lakers. But very encouraging to see the improvement in Russell's floor game. 13 assists to two turnovers is awesome. Granted, it was against the Kings, but he was much more in control and his penetrations and kick outs were excellent. I'd like to see Harden shoot more when his time increases--he has a nice stroke. A little surprised DJ White didn't play at all.

A nice start.

Had to drop by this morning just to see what Paul would offer up... Weak! Bagging on a sell out and pointing out a pre-season score from a week ago is weaker than the Kings were last night. Oh well - at least the Thunder showed up and gave a strong effort. But hey, the season is long and this is only the day after Opening Night. Maybe Paul will develop some better material as the season goes along, but I've got to say, Season 2 is not off to a strong start for Mr. Yukon.
Scott, Tulsa - Oct 29, 2009 at 9:44 am
We'll definitely have some groaners and we'll be pushed on the defensive end of the court. But we should be able to score most of the time!

Chris, Jones - Oct 29, 2009 at 9:33 am
Lots more sponsors last night, I noticed too. I believe we've got 25 new sponsors, I read somewhere. As was said earlier, Westbrook was on fire. We scored 68 points in the first half and looked like the team all the sportswriters have been oohng and aahing over this summer. What you notice watching the team however, and that says we'll going to have some groaners as well, is again, how incredibly young this team is, and that we just don't have a lot of talent on our bench.....yet. Our bench has some very young players with a lot of potential as well. Look out next year!

Omri Casspi looked really good. Does anyone else agree? He and Chase Budinger were two players I was interested to see play. So far both are looking good.

Hope Mullens, Weaver, White, and Varden/Vaden(?) will pan out, if not, we might regret not trying to trade some combo of these and getting Casspi or Budinger.

Ed Lova, Oklahoma City - Oct 29, 2009 at 8:45 am
Great game and good effort by the Thunder. Durant and Green are a potent 1 - 2 punch with others contributing nicely. One thing that concerns me is that when Krstic goes out and Etan Thomas comes in, our interior defense suffers greatly. Shore that up and things look good, albeit against a weaker opponent. And ladies, you looked great, but please loose those chaps. I'm kind of a leg man and you're covering up some of the best parts.

Rob, I agree 100%...ticket revenue has a great chance of exceeding last year's revenue...very impressive for OKC!! The potential will increase tremendously if Thunder is competitive and somehow makes the playoffs. What a challenge for the team!
Ole Man, Yukon - Oct 29, 2009 at 8:31 am
Paul - thanks for watching the game. It was a sellout - mentioned it several times during the broadcast. Hanging your hat on a pre-season game? Well done. That'll get you far. Nobody is saying the Thunder held back to "save themselves." Last year, even against a team like the Kings, OKC would have given up this lead and lost the game. Nobody is claiming the Thunder are going to win the NBA championship. They are just happy for an opening night win where the team looked solid, even if it was against a weak opponent. Good teams win the games they are supposed to. Enjoy your continued hatred. Today's weather should be perfect for your overflowing optimism and positive attitude.

Michael, Oklahoma City - Oct 29, 2009 at 8:27 am
One thing I noticed, Ole Man, was that the new club level "suites" at each end were fully occupied. It's obvious that with those seats going for around $12,000 each per season the Thunder will exceed last season's ticket revenue despite the resulting reduced capacity.

Who needs a sell out when court-side seats sell for about $600 each. I watched some of last night's game and nearly all of these seats were occuppied. Once again Paul you show how stupid you are. Same ole dribble about the Thunder and any DOK article that you can put a negative spin on about Oklahoma. Yeah, I'm excited about the Thunder's success.
Ole Man, Yukon - Oct 29, 2009 at 7:42 am
18,203 is a sellout, Paulie Boy. Your "guaranty" of not selling out and your "guaranty" of a loss was not fulfilled. Your predictions are as worthless as Key Arena. What's your excuse? Stupidity or self-denial?

Alf, the dunder fans are overjoyed because they beat the worst team in the league. The *nearly* worst team in the league beats the worst team in the league (and no matter that the worst team in the league beat them by a greater margin a week ago on okaysees home court.

Yeah, let's get excited.

As far as points by quarter are concerned, the fanatics will try and convince you that they slowed down as the game wore on to "save themselves" or some such BS.

I don't see any mention of the Ford NOT being sold out (once again), more than likely the excuse will be because of who they played instead of the real reason.

Naysayer. Did somebody say naysayer? Just the facts mam. Look at the box score, Sacramento fell behind by 17 in the first quarter. That was the game. Now look at the Thunder points scored by quarter 39, 29, 21, 13. I see a familiar pattern. Tell me what you see?

Good game tonight. We did what we are suppose to do against teams as bad as the Kings. WIN! It was a good game to take the wife and daughter too. They had a lot of fun. But my basketball buddy and I are going to the Lakers game Tuesday. We will find out where we stack up against the big boys. Win or lose I love the way we play, and how we are improving as a team. GO THUNDER!!!

And Michael I agree. The food service stunk tonight. But it was opening night. And it was most likely some of the servers first time in what can be a heck tick environment. GO SERVERS!!! LOL
Tim , Mustang - Oct 29, 2009 at 2:12 am
was at the game...awesome effort by the thunder! Now....if any of the Ford Center or Thunder officials happen to read this, the food service at the FC is TERRIBLE! If you are going to charge me $5 for a drink and $9 for a barbeque sandwich and fries, please give me awesome service! The lines are long, the workers are disorganized at best and have one speed (slow). Running a concession stand is not quantum physics, get it right. You will actually sell MORE food and drinks if you improve the service. Come on Ford Center food service....THUNDER UP!
