Officer faces abuse claim

A Tulsa police officer has been arrested in Bixby on charges of domestic assault and battery. Police arrested Ronald Montgomery, 31, on Tuesday for allegedly assaulting his wife and pointing his loaded service weapon at her July 29. The wife says her son, 1, and daughter, 8, witnessed the incident. Montgomery told police he and his wife had argued but that he had not touched her. He is free on $11,500 bail.

Jail assault is alleged

A Sallisaw man jailed on a murder charge is accused by prosecutors of throwing a book at a jailer who took his toothbrush. Leon Winston, 42, now faces a misdemeanor assault charge along with the murder charge in the death of a Sallisaw woman, according to Sequoyah County court records. He remained jailed Wednesday without bail. Winston is charged in the September 2008 beating and stabbing death of Darla Caughman, 62. The toothbrush was on a windowsill that was supposed to remain free of objects.

Take train for big game

The Heartland Flyer will again offer it Oklahoma-Texas football game excursion train to Dallas with a roundtrip ticket of $40. Early reservations are advised. The train leaves Oklahoma City at 8:25 a.m. Oct. 16 and arrives at Dallas’ Union Station at 2:10 p.m. The train will stop in Norman, Purcell, Pauls Valley, Ardmore and in Texas at Gainesville and Fort Worth. The return trip leaves Dallas Union Station at 2:45 p.m. Oct. 18 and be back in Oklahoma City at 9:39 p.m. Last year about 350 fans made the railway trip.

Firefighters receive funds

Volunteer fire departments across northeast Oklahoma received checks for equipment from the Cherokee Nation. The tribe distributed $2,462.19 checks — a total of more than $305,000 — to 124 volunteer fire departments within its jurisdiction during a barbecue buffet Tuesday night at its Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. The tribe also recognized firefighters of the year Dale Fine of Peggs, David Lee Jones of Bell, Rick Russell of Mulrow, Loyal Dean Taylor of Shady Grove and Lana Sanders of Disney.

clinton ex-aide faces charges

LITTLE ROCK, Ark.— A former top aide to Bill Clinton when he was Arkansas governor was charged Wednesday with trying to smuggle a knife and 48 tattoo needles onto the state’s death row. Betsey Wright, a longtime visitor to death row, was detained May 22 after a guard noticed a small knife and a box cutter attached to her key chain, said prison spokeswoman Dina Tyler. In an interview with The Associated Press, Wright denied the charges against her.

brides angry over missing gowns

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Police have launched an investigation after a Colorado bridal shop closed and allegedly failed to deliver gowns that were paid for. Fort Collins police spokeswoman Rita Davis says that as of Tuesday, 51 brides had contacted authorities, saying Mountain Avenue Bridal had failed to provide them with their dresses.

wolf release raises questions

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — U.S. wildlife officials and ranchers are raising questions over a plan to release a North American gray wolf to its historic range in northern Mexico. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said this week it learned of the plan to release captive-bred Mexican gray wolves during a meeting with Mexican officials. A male, female and two yearlings could be released in Sonora state, bordering Arizona and New Mexico, as early as October.
