Slain homeless man remembered in Edmond
Money collected to pay funeral costs for Bicycle Bob, who was known throughout Edmond

EDMOND — Dwight A. Morgan had been riding his bicycle in Edmond for at least 25 years.

Most people knew him as Bicycle Bob, a homeless man who pedaled through town wearing one or more coats even in the hot summer months.

Morgan’s body was found about 3:05 p.m. Sunday. Travis Monroe Jim, 20, another homeless man, was arrested on a complaint of first-degree murder. He was in Oklahoma County jail Monday without bail.

A cause of death was not available Monday afternoon.

Police officers and people in Edmond have been helping Morgan, 54, for years. Concern for the man who lived on the streets didn’t stop Monday when people learned he had been killed.

"We’re going to make sure he has a Christian funeral,” said Rockie Yardley, a police crime scene investigator.

Community members came together Monday, pooling money for funeral expenses.

Churches and a funeral home have agreed to help, too.

"He was Edmond’s first homeless person,” Yardley said. "Nobody turned their back on Dwight.”

Sgt. Scott Fees said officers always checked on Morgan to make sure he was OK year-round, but especially in winter.

"We would give him bottles of water or buy him a hamburger,” Fees said. "It was a lifestyle he chose. We all kept an eye on him.”

Morgan never did anything criminal. He would move if there was a complaint about where he was staying, police said.

"Everyone has a Dwight story,” Fees said. "Everyone is upset how he passed away. He never bothered anyone. He was a good guy.”

Charlotte Worsham, the owner of Around the Corner Restaurant, said she fed Morgan the sausage special with biscuits and gravy and coffee every day for the past two years.

"I didn’t charge him,” Worsham said. "That could be me some day.”

Morgan frequently visited Al’s Bicycles, 2624 Broadway Court, usually about a problem with his bicycle but sometimes just to talk — especially in the winter months.

Craig Cossey, the store’s manager, said a couple of customers bought Morgan bikes during the 16 years he has worked at the Edmond store.

Once, Cossey said, he asked Morgan if he wouldn’t like a job where he made enough money for a place to live.

"He told me he had already done that,” he said.

"I think he was living the way he wanted to live,” Cossey said.
