Sutton is gone only because TBoone is getting old. This is a bad precedent
for college athletics and no legit athletic director or university would do it.
Holder has nothing to do with it .. he is just a puppet or spokesman for TBoone.

OSU is known as the college of 2nd (and sometimes 3rd) chances for athletes. With that go risks that require great leadership skills. Young Sean was simply not ready for the task.

I cannot believe all of the goofy trash talk by the OU bandwagon crowd. It seems that every other comment on this forum is some OU fan wanting to weigh in on Sean Sutton's firing and knock Mr. Pickens. You OU guys need to worry about your own coaches and your own donors. ---- The issue at hand is simply this. Division I coaches are subject to be fired if they don't win enough games. OSU missed the NCAA tournament. We lost to OU at home. OSU's last two basketball seasons were just not up to what we expect. I love the Suttons (Even with their shortcomings.), but I also realize that Mike Holder has the toughest job on the OSU campus. The buck stops with Holder. He did what he believed was best for the school. We now need a coach and I believe he will deliver the best coach for the job (and yes, I know Mr. Pickens’ money will help!). ----- Now for all of you Boone Pickens detractors. ---- OSU now has at least one booster who has put his huge wallet and generous heart into the OSU athletic program. No OSU fan ever questioned the Noble family when they funded an arena or the Gaylord family for their generosity. I say more power to you! Why do OU fans rag on OSU just because we now have what really fuels every successful sports program in the world; MONEY. Pickens is a great man who started poor, studied hard, worked hard, made wise decisions, got really rich, and is now giving a small portion of his huge fortune to his alma mater. Mr. Pickens’ money will have an impact on all OSU athletic programs. It already has. Mr. Pickens has had a huge impact on the academic end of the campus, too. ----You OU weenies can just choke on that while Mr. Holder looks for a coach

TBoone should cut the BS and name himself AD. Holder needs to go back to the golf course. Billionaires can't buy college championships.... pathetic to watch.

I am not an OSU fan. However, I watched OSU and Sean Sutton over the years. I believe that, once again, money is more important than the right thing to do. They should have at least given him 1 more year to produce.

Holder probably just did Sean a huge favor by not giving him another year. The current collective wisdom seems to be that Sean should have been given another year. If he had been given that 3rd year, then the basketball community would have certainly had less respect for him as a head coach -- assuming things didn't get better. This way Sean can go off and pursue other Div 1 positions (Marquette, perhaps?), and while folks won't feel sorry for him, they'll certainly see that he was on an uptick during the last part of the Big 12 season.

The only requirement needed to apply: must not mind being controlled by out of state oil man, and yes, there are strings attached. (AKA Puppet or Whipping Boy).

Good move, not overdue but a good move nonetheless. OSU simply was NOT COMPETITIVE in the Big 12 this season. What have we won - 2 road games in 2 years in basketball? Not acceptable. Just like the "hiring process" Sean benefitted from to get the job. No search committee, no examination of credentials/experience, because Sean had NONE - no HC experience at college/university or even at a top high school program. Hand-picked successor or "Head Coach Designate" getting a Div. 1 vacancy is not the means used to elevate a program when Eddie had raised the bar as high as he had at Oklahoma State. Same story will dog Pat Knight at Texas Tech. Sean lacked the leadership and experience and just got outmaneuvered in several games late in the contest this year. He needs to gain the experience elsewhere, then seek an opening like the one that was "handed" to him this time. I've nothing against Mike Holder. I believe he bleeds orange and black and this was not an easy or popular move to make, but it was necessary. If Sean hadn't been relieved, it would have sent a message that seasons like this past were acceptable at Oklahoma State for basketball, and I think those days were back in the Guy Strong/Jim Killingsworth era, thank goodness.

If the Athletic Director is going to fire the basketball coach for wins and loss' and dwindling attendance. What about the biggest sport on campus, Football? Check out the won loss record for that program and the dwindling attendance. How come Gundy is getting a free ride? If Sutton deserved to be fired so does Gundy.

Here's the problem with not giving Sean another year. The program will take at least two years to recover from the turnover in the coaches, so it'll likely be year three of the new guy's regime before the AD expects any production. So, if you're willing to go another three years before meeting expectations and willing to give a new guy three years, why not afford that same opportunity to Sean for a third year to be fair? It was personal! And, the more that poney baloney AD denies it, the more he appears to be a liar! Saying that Sean didn't wannt to be there--who the heck is buying that!

While I do not believe Sean was the person for the job,I know for certain Holder is NOT the man to be the AD. He has done more to alienate fans than all the other ADs out together, If he isn't stopped, all athletics will become a laughing stock. I may be too late what with Gundy and I bet a joke for the new head basketball coach. Just because he is T. Boone Pickens' personal choice, he thinks he can do anything, including messing up ticket sales. In two or three years he will be gone and so will OSU's athletic program.

James, KC, your exactly right. We know who those 2 coaches were. As for the others they were mostly ousted because they couldn't get it done. Or at least I don't know of one that went to a better program. Maybe Daniel from Portland knows of one that did (yeah right LMAO at that punk). Thing to me is that last year hurt way bad for Sean with injuries and only having like 7 players that were contributors. This year after losing Curry and Cooper he had to try to play in conference with 4 freshmen and without Garret (who would have been a valuable contributor) injured early and out for the season. What I hope doesn't happen (but it probably will) is that some coach will come in next year and for a few years will have some sucess as in winning a game or 2 in the NCAA with Seans recruits and then OSU will be back in the same shape they are in now. I guess bottom line is I think this was not all thought out well by ADMH and TBONE. I think it will come back to bite them in the Azz and I will be the first oall them on it. I support the University but will never support the Atletic Dept as long as Holder is the AD and the Dept is ran by TBone no matter how much money he gives. I feel all was well before he got involved. I hope I am wrong, but at the moment that is the way I feel. GO POKES

Okay, I guess I'll chime in on this one... I do not now, nor have I ever believed that Bill Self will leave KU for OSU. A few weeks ago, as I was calling for Sean to get another year (and I still believe he deserved a final year), I posted that there were a few programs that recruit for themselves -- KU, UCLA, North Carolina, UConn, Kentucky, et al. OSU is not one of those programs and the top coaches know that. I don't believe that a decent coach at any of those schools is going to be the least bit impressed by TBP's money. In fact, the only people that are impressed are Holder and Gundy. OSU is going to fo through a series of coaches now that have no loyalty to the school and simply use their time there as a stepping stone to a more prestigious job. We just completed our 98th season of basketball at OSU and in that time we have had 17 coaches. Two coaches account for 52 years of the program meaning that the other 15 coaches have averaged just over three years each. Just like Eddie found success by looking at the juco ranks, Holder has created the same situation for the basketball program now. He is going to have to go after a top-flight mid-major coach, throw him a bone on a BCS stage, let him coach for two or three years and then start over when that coach bolts for a better program. Sooner alums/fans chastising OSU alums/fans for wishing Self would make the jump -- relax we know exactly what we're facing, you can't blame us for hoping. Fact is, and I hope I am dead-wrong, we are back on the merry-go-round.

Desiree you said all that so well. You are a true OSU fan. As for you Daniel I wish I could give you a wedgie. Do you remember the days that OSU BB or for that matter any sport at OSU was an afterthought. OSU has only a few years (at any Sport) when they were successfull (if successfull is big bowl games or final 4's). Holder did this University a big disfavor today in firing a second year head coach. Hell he should have done us a big favor last fall and fired our under acomplishing Head Football couch from the way you talk Daniel. It's way obvious from the way you think think that maybe Leonard Hamilton should still be our coach and we would never have had the 2 final fours and the several sweet sixteens we had. It will be several years (if ever) for a new coach to get use to where Eddie took us and where Sean would have taken us in the next few years. Heil Holder.

As an OSU alum and "true" Oklahoma State fan (not just of sports, but of the University itself) I am ashamed that Holder so hastily shuffled Sean out the door. In my opinion, one of the greatest qualities of OSU is the tradition and spirit of loyalty and devotion of the staff, students, alumni, and fans. I have prided myself on the unwavering support and true adoration of the University and the Cowboys for many years, and it's a real disappointment to see that the administration (or at least a few) are sell-outs. Two years is not enough time to analyze the performance of a coach--I would venture to say that during Eddie's long reign there were a few years of sub-par records--no one would assess his worth based upon those few slumps. Sean took on a major challenge when he became head coach, amidst situations that were less than ideal, both personally and professionally. I think the impatience and arrogance with which his performance was assessed and dismissed as unsuccessful says something about a direction I truly hope this University is not heading. I am horrified to think that I am one of a dying breed that believes sometimes loyalty, integrity, and fairness should prevail, and greed and a win-at-all-cost attitude will hurt you in the end.
Just like any other fan, I endured the lows (and highs, which are rarely mentioned) with the Cowboy team this year and wish it could have turned out differently. I also know that next year's more mature team has an even better chance of being successful. Too bad Sean won't be around to enjoy the improvements he undoubtedly has helped to foster. Good luck to you, Sean, and may you prove your coaching talents to a more receptive and appreciative University.
I'm afraid that the fate of Oklahoma State has landed in the clench of a tyrannical few, and that monetary "gifts" don't actually come without a cost. I'm beginning to suspect that our stadium's namesake has more than secured his reign and regime at this point. We can't fire a donor, but I think we should review the "record" of the AD under a microscope--in just over two years as AD, has Holder sailed all our athletic programs to "top tier"? No? Well, then, let's clear him out and shell out more money to hire a fix. After all, Boone can buy success, right?

Those of you that say he deserved one more year should have seen the Southern Illinois game. 19 points in the first half. The players looked and played like they wanted to be somewhere else. It was one of the most pathetic efforts I have seen. I was on the fence in the middle of the year and especially after they beat A&M, Kansas, and Mizzou. I thought Sean had finally turned the corner with his guys. But after the final game at SIU it was apparent he had lost them. Coaches can't lose the interest of his players. These are guys that he recruited for his dad or himself. If he can't keep his own guys in the fold, and they show such disrespect for the coaching staff and fans it is time to clean house. It doesn't make any difference how much time you give him. He could not consistently keep his players motivated. It's time for a new coach.

Daniel from Portland. I'm sure your the same person that was kicked off the Orangepower.com site and now can only post on the bedlam and flames portion of the site. How do you think Eddie ever survived at OSU? With JUCO players and second chancers. And as not having a high quility recruit for next year, What about the Oklahoma player of the year. If I had the time I would go back and check how many of Seans losses were in the last minute of the games. The coach can't make those last minute shots for the kids on the court. And also to give Gundy an extension and a raise on his mediocre career at OSU is a joke too. Yeah he won 2 toilet bowls but so what. You are probably not old enough to remember the Leonard Hamiltion day, Who was the coach at OSO when I was there. OSU has only been strong in BB for the last 18 years ALL UNDER SUTTONS. Disgrace? Being a realist is disgraceful? You've got to be blind not to see where the program was headed. No recruits in the top 150 for next year is a good indicator. What about how long it took to turn a McDonald's All-American into a functional point guard? What about blowing game after game in the last five minutes? What about a system stuck on JUCO players?
And Krystal, to get respect, you have to give it. Sean treated many campers who attended his dad's basketball camp with none. He's not half the coach his dad was, nepotism can only last so long. The said "2 years" is a little bit of an inaccuracy too. He's been around plenty long, including as interim head coach just so the transition would be a smooth one. It was not.

oh Max, I love the irony in calling someone a moron and misspelling the said word. Leaders see the big picture and you obviously do not. The forecast for Sean and the program was bleak. This looks like a corporate decision and it was. It showed no loyalty to the Sutton family, but quite frankly, the Sutton family has been slinging OSU's name through the mud the past few years anyway. This is about winning and money; and they breed each other. We were headed towards empty seats and NITs. The longer Sean coached the further the program would have suffered. OSU is not going to get a head coach from Kansas, Memphis, or other top program. Holder needs to bring in Kelvin Sampson, he knows how to recruit in the region and nationally. I was just listening to Mike Holder, and I have come to the conclusion that What OSU really needs is an honest AD, that wouldn't come on state TV and lie to everyone. If I was Eddie Sutton I would demand that my name be taken off that court! Mike Holder had planned to fire Sean months ago. And to believe otherwise would be a crock. They absolutely have a name to replace Sean, and they will announce it pretty darn quick.

Mike Holder is an embarrassment. The wrong man is leaving. What happened to honesty, integrity and fairness? Sean deserves another year, Holder doesn't.

In listening to this clown, Mike Holder, give his press conference, I sure am happy to be a Sooner and proud that we have a COMPETENT athletic director like Joe Castiglione. My condolences go out to the OSU nation that are stuck with this guy.

TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN SEAN. YOU AND OTHERS WILL BE PART OF THE REVOLVING COACHING DOOR AS LONG AS HOLDER IS THERE.

Holder is an idiot. Im a student at OSU and he is so dumb and most of the students think so. Sean is going to a great coach one day. Every new coach stuggles at first. Bob Knight, Eddie Sutton, Scott Sutton, Mike K, Roy Williams, Jim Calhoun, and Rick Barnes are just a few to name that stuggled early in their coaching careers but look at them NOW!

Mike Holder should have resigned not Sean Sutton!

Sean deserved more time. He's an alum, former player and had to follow a basketball legend. He has a great basketball mind and it is a shame his alma mater won't be able to gain from it.

Apparently, his father, T Boone and Holder had a problem that got passed to him along with the job. Now, all Sutton's have be expelled, therefore an era has ended. Too bad for Oklahoma!

OU is just good enough to get a spot on national tv with a huge audience and then get blown out. Public humiliations in two sports in one year. Quite an accomplishment, Sooner fan.

As you could expect, OSU proved, once again, they are second rate.

Right, Gary. OSU is a terrible program with the top-rated arena in the country. No tradition or history and certainly no good basketball players come from OSU. Right?

Who would want to come to OSU now when a coach with a "contract" can get fired in his second season, when he's won more games than any other coach this year than any other 2nd year coach. Contracts mean nothing, schedule means nothing, honor means nothing, wins mean nothing. Unless there is something "hidden" that we don't know about. This is about "EGO" and Holder's need to get the Suttons out so he can be the BMOC.

Sooner perspective: With Mike Holder in charge of the OSU Athletic Department this is about what I expected would happen. Sean seems like a class coach who did a respectable job, and probably would have done better given the chance. Too bad the old golf coach gets to decide the future of Cowboy basketball.

How do you go from a final four appearance in 2004 and have the number 1 recruiting class to this? Well the writing was on the wall when Gerald Green went pro and Mr. Braumbaugh never set foot on the court. From that point on Sean was trying to pull "rabbits out of the hat" with his assortment of Juco's and second teir recruits the last 3 years. I don't think anyone will argue Sean's coaching X'S and O's ability but as we all are aware a head coach at a major university has to have the "whole package". I'm not sure Sean does. Eddie did the University and Sean no favors with his stubborn and arrogant denial of where the program was heading in 2006 and the reason's why. Finally Sean was left to "clean up the mess" and could'nt. Mike Holder and most of the alumni felt betrayed and embarassed by what happende with Eddie's departure and never embraced the "right of passage" that Sean was given to the Head position. With all this being said - I for one feel Sean should have been given another year with his kids coming back. My thought is there is a "deal" in the works with a fairly "big name" coach and or a deal will be made this weekend at the final four. I just hope cowboy fans are not left "scratching their heads" with the next hire - asking "was this the right thing to do"? I know All Cowboy Fans wish Sean the best, and wish things could have turned out differently.

The next coach should be Tubby Smith. He has Oklahoma ties, has been successful everywhere he has been, and oh yea the National Title isn't bad either.

Sean obviously wasn't right for the job. The program was already stagnany so this is the right move. Now to find the right man for the job. How about the brother. I know he will be successful. Bill Self will laugh at you. Even Isiah Thomas would pump some interest into OSU. Don't look back the answers for the future are not there.

This should not happen. Sutton has done more with less and grown players beyond what any prospective replacement could do. We cannot find a better coach or better man to lead our boys. Holder on the other hand...

Sean Sutton inherited a nightmare of a situation. I never perceived that the Suttons and Holder shared many family dinners or Easter egg hunts together anyway. Some personalities just don’t jive. I am sure that Holder had to do a lot of damage control to do in the last months of Eddie’s reign. A lot of this would have been avoided if Eddie had not caused Sean to be forced into the captain's seat of a floundering ship. Under better situations, Sean S. could have probably made the transition with success. Most of us admire the Sutton era in general. Sadly, when it is all said and done, Eddie Sutton will probably go down as the biggest factor in the demise of Sean Sutton. The program was in trouble when Eddie S. started drinking again and ended up causing the accident. Sean Sutton inherited a program that was shaken by the senior Sutton’s problems and then proceeded to lose his best players (Curry and Bogan) to graduation and to the NBA draft. The transfer of Cooper was also a tough lick. A lot of the key players, who stayed with the OSU Basketball program, spent a great deal of their summer in the Payne County courthouse, trying to overcome their off-court antics. The timing was just all wrong from the beginning; for Sutton and for Holder! Both Sutton and Holder would like a chance to do it all over again under a less ominous situation. Sean will most likely be successful somewhere else and may haunt us some day. I hope he does well and wish him the best of luck. Holder, no doubt will find a coach that can fit OSU and himself. Holder has a tough job and even though I personally, would have given Sean Sutton another year, Holder loves our school and will make a great (and expensive) hire!
