Sam Bradford still undecided on what to do

BY JAKE TROTTER    Comments Comment on this article82

NORMAN — Nothing has gone as planned for Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford this season.

Multimedia

More Info

Oklahoma at No. 25 Kansas
When: 2:30 p.m. Saturday

Where: Memorial Stadium, Lawrence, Kan.

TV: ABC (Cox 8)

Radio: KRXO-FM 107.7

So why would his planned press conference Wednesday be any different?

Two hours before he was set to make an announcement about his future that was scheduled to be streamed on the university’s Web site and carried live by ESPN, Bradford canceled the press conference.

"Sam’s whole situation is he’ll have something to say when he knows what his path will be, and that isn’t right now,” said Sooner coach Bob Stoops, who met with a large media contingent after practice instead of Bradford. "He wasn’t ready to fully answer everything that will want to be asked. And for sure knows what he wants to do just yet, until he visits with a few more people.”

Before it was canceled, all signs pointed to Bradford announcing he was going to have season-ending surgery after he re-aggravated his separated throwing shoulder against Texas last weekend. One report even surfaced that Bradford had made up his mind on surgery.

Instead, Bradford’s status will remain in limbo, at least for another day.

"What’s going to happen a week from now, three weeks from now, I don’t know,” said quarterbacks coach Josh Heupel, who also spoke Wednesday. "We’ll have to see as we go down the road.”

Neither Stoops nor Heupel agreed to confirm specifically why the press conference was canceled, though Stoops admitted it was Bradford’s decision alone to call the press conference and then to cancel it.

Stoops noted that Bradford wants "more time to gather more information.” But it’s unclear if Bradford is holding onto hope of playing again this season, or if he needs further evaluation on his shoulder before having it operated on for insurance purposes, or what.

Either way, this is not the kind of speculation anyone envisioned for Bradford after he announced in the winter he was putting off the NFL Draft — despite being a potential top 10 pick — to return for his junior year of college. Six games into the season, the speculation was supposed to be about Bradford’s chances of winning a second Heisman Trophy and his Sooners returning to the BCS National Championship.

"It’s extremely difficult for him, coming back for the right reasons,” Heupel said. "Wanting to have an opportunity to compete for a championship.

"There was a lot of hard work that went into that, so to have it taken away from you when you invest that much, it’s going to be very disappointing.”

But nobody appears ready to turn the page just yet on one of the finest careers in OU football history.

Even if Bradford never plays another down for the Sooners, he’ll own school records for career passing touchdowns, career passing yards and career passing efficiency and a host of other single-game and single-season OU marks.

So while redshirt freshman Landry Jones prepares for his fourth career start at quarterback Saturday in a pivotal game for the 3-3 Sooners at Kansas, Sooner Nation will continue to wonder. Waiting for Bradford to announce his next move.

Said Stoops, "Once he feels he’s ready to and knows for sure what he wants to do. ... he will.

Sam Bradford's second shoulder injury shows what an inhuman, self-centered jerk (for lack of a better non-vulgar term) Bob Stoops is. He cared NOTHING about Bradford's health when he pushed Bradford back on the field way too soon. He did that simply to have a chance against Texas, a team he can't seem to beat lately. Stoops and no one else decides who plays in a game. If he cared at all about the young man's health, Stoops would have benched him for as long as it takes to get him healthy. I am sure that Bradford was lobbying Stoops to play again, but Stoops should have known better than to play him. Or, worse, he did know better and used Bradford anyway with no regard for Bradford's health.

Is the coach's seat getting a little hot with all the losses to Texas and all the bowl losses in recent years? If not, it should be. Stoops has shown himself to be a very good coach, but he is far from a great coach. This complete disregard for Sam Bradford's health and future for the sake of a big game (and with 2 losses already, a game that still would have done nothing to get them to the NC) was a barbarously self-centered decision.

Oklahoma should fire Bob Stoops immediately!! This is the perfect opportunity to get rid of a coach that cannot get his team to the top, and is appropriate for such a monstrously inhuman decision.

Seems like everyone has an opinion on what Sam should do and not do. If Stoops needs to make changes to his coaching staff. The truth is OU had a very successfull run for number of years that others school would envy. This is sport and every now and then we have up & down years. Fine, we had high expectations for this year with Slinging Sam,Gresham and the defense coming back. Unfortunately, things did not work out. Give credit to Sam, Gresham, Trent Williams and McCoy for coming back. But REALITY sinks in....we need a plan to make the team better with what we have......develop the talent around Landy Jones to assist him having a productive offense. Get offensive line better.....get some JUCO transfers.....Remember the offensive Coordinator is the same guy who orchestrated the dynamic offense of 2008. OU defense always plays well.....with few miss assignments and mistackles....thats not Venables fault...players need to make plays. In the end, I am not a spoke person for Stoops or his coaching staff.....but I think we need to thing in a rational way with what we have and how we can make things better. Thats all .

Maybe Sam should talk to Curtis Lofton about how Stoops & Venables told NFL scouts that Lofton's 40 time was much slower than reported in hopes of his draft stock falling and him returning to school for his senior year. These coaches are looking out for one person and one person only, and it definitely isn't Sam Bradford.

A Good Article about Sam Bradford in the Fort Worth Star Telegram.

Thanks for the memories, Sam. And the championships. Best of luck in the NFL next season.

If that is not the type of feedback Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford is getting from behind closed doors in the Sooners’ football complex, then shame on the coaches. If Bradford is hearing those words in private and ignoring them, shame on Sam for not learning from experience.

Two shoulder injuries into the Sooners’ 3-3 season from hell, it is time for this soap opera to end with its only logical conclusion: The 2008 Heisman Trophy and Davey O’Brien Award winner should declare himself available for the 2010 NFL Draft and begin working immediately to rehabilitate his throwing shoulder — with or without surgery — in anticipation of wowing scouts at the NFL Combine in February.

Oklahoma officials scheduled, then canceled, a Wednesday news conference for Bradford to detail his future plans. In a statement, coach Bob Stoops said Bradford "wants more time to gather information."

Here’s all the information Bradford, or any other rising star on the college landscape, really needs to know: With the potential for labor unrest looming on the NFL horizon, the last guaranteed year under the existing draft system — which handsomely compensates first-round picks to a level teams hope to curtail in the future — will be 2010.

Everyone is counting on a rookie salary cap in 2011, so the time to strike is now if you’re going to maximize your signing bonus as a first-round pick.

Simple solution: Avoid the risk of further injury and cash in now, Sam. Wait any longer and you risk waving goodbye to anything close to the type of deal signed by quarterback Matthew Stafford (six years, $41.7 million), the top overall pick in the 2009 draft.

That spot, and those dollars, could have been Bradford’s in April if he had chosen to leave school early. But he opted to return. While in Fort Worth to pick up his O’Brien Award in February, Bradford said he saw the 2009 season as a chance to "better" his skills with another year of college experience. He also said he wanted another shot to win the national championship that eluded OU in last year’s BCS title game.

"I see us being on the national stage again," Bradford said at the time. "If I didn’t see that, I wouldn’t be coming back."

As things stand today, No. 25 Oklahoma (3-3, 1-1 in Big 12) is out of the national championship race and relegated to long-shot status in its quest for a Big 12 title. Bradford is scheduled to earn his finance degree in December and should use it to make wise investments with the millions he will receive as a first-round pick.

Spending any more time playing behind the Sooners’ patchwork offensive line would be dangerous to his health. That point was driven home Sept. 5 against Brigham Young, when Bradford separated his shoulder on a hit by a blitzing linebacker. It was reinforced Saturday against Texas, when he aggravated the injury on a first-quarter sack. jburch@star-telegram.com

Thus far, injury reports have not cited a need for surgery although Bradford said last week it was "possible." The Web site soonerscoop.com, citing unnamed sources, reported Wednesday that Bradford is scheduled to have surgery Tuesday with Dr. James Andrews, a renowned orthopedic surgeon in Birmingham, Ala. Another site, OUinsider, reported that Bradford is considering surgery as well as the possibility of resting and returning for some late-season games.

Bradford is not talking — yet. But if he’s thinking about taking more snaps for OU this season, behind this sieve of an offensive line, he’s making a mistake. His NFL future is far too valuable for such a risk.

Don’t buy into the bunk that Bradford needs to prove something to NFL general managers about his ability to take a hit. It is true, based on talks with NFL scouts, that teams would like to see him put on more upper-body bulk. But that is easily accomplished without exposing him to more hits at the college level.

Remember: The NFL is the same league that saw the Buffalo Bills spend a first-round pick on running back Willis McGahee while he was recuperating from reconstructive knee surgery after his final college game. If Bradford visits the surgeon in the near future, you can still bank on him being a first-round pick next April.

One day after Bradford’s second shoulder injury, former NFL general manager Charley Casserly told a Sunday audience on CBS’ NFL Today that OU’s quarterback projected as "a top-five pick last year" and the same would hold true today.

Sam, don’t jeopardize that status by taking foolish chances with your long-term health. You’ll always be an Oklahoma legend. But now, it’s time to take things to the next level. The sooner, the better.

Go Sam, Go to the Pro's. Don't return to the team except to walk the sidelines and give
encouragement to others, sign autographs. etc. Don't make a soap opera out of you injury.
Just leave, get the surgery or what ever. OU is not a good team with you or without you. Texas and BYU proved that. Baylor was your swan song. The team needs the same guy behind
center every week to salvage this season and look forward to the next. You are not helping
the situation with the team or Jones. Have some respect for your predecessor. Stoops
needs to encourage you to stay out. He has made his share of mistakes with his QB's
over the past 10 season's, don't force him to make another. Don't pull a Favre.

The pro scouts like Bradford because of how he can go through his reads and deliver the ball. They guy would have been the number one pick in the draft last year over Stafford. That should tell you numbskulls a little something.

I see RL has finally gotten over his Tigers being beaten by the Gators. And, that statement about Bradford not being able to take a hit.....how did Tebow stand up when he got blizted in Kentucky? Any QB that takes a hit from a wide open blitzing LB is going to risk injury....I don't care who it is.
Lloyd, Irving - Oct 22, 2009 at 6:48 pm
If you want to replace Stoops with anyone you're crazy. Don't bring that gimmicky crap offense to Norman. it works in the WAC, and yes Boise St beat OU a few years ago. But it would not work week after week against Big 12 football.

Four QBs were taken in the first two rounds of the 2009 NFL draft.

1st pick Matthew Stafford 41.7 million guaranteed
5th pick Mark Sanchez 28 million guaranteed
17th pick Josh Freeman 10.25 million guaranteed
44th pick Pat White 4 years/4.5 million

Despite what I'm reading on here from some--if Sam called me tomorrow and ask me to be his agent--I'd feel pretty good about things in the bigger scheme of things. I think he'll make a living wage.

Situation, situation, situation. If he goes somewhere with no offensive line and he thrown to the wolves it may suck a little. If he goes somewhere with a good offensive line and he can sit one year and get some playing time I personally think it would be perfect. Everyone says he would have been number one pick last year. Question, where is the number one pick (Matthew Stafford) presently at? Answer, injured on a horrible team.

RL, yes he has some physical maturing to do. But thats normal for a 21 year old.

"People who think Bradford could play in the NFL are insane!" That's an insane statement in itself. It may be your "humble" opinion that he won't be successful, but people who are paid millions of dollars to scout potential NFL stars think that he's a VERY good prospect in spite of both injuries. Everyone should recall that NFL scouts/fans thought that Peterson was too injury prone to be a great NFL back and now he's the next Walter Payton. Remember Peterson ended up getting injured and re-injured all through his junior season as a Sooner/NFL prospect, including reinjuring his shoulder in the Fiesta Bowl (I was there) against Boise St.

OU is terrible and Bob Stoops probably won't last long. Please don't say that it's all because of Bradford, because we all know Bradford only had Heisman numbers last year because of how weak his Big 12 conference defenses were. This year proves that he can't take a hit, and he would never have even been in the runnings for Heisman last year if he played an SEC schedule and defensive talent. The kid (Bradford) is goofy looking and way too skinny for football.

Points to Ponder: Are the two players from BYU and Texas who hurt Bradford have the size, talent, and speed of NFL defensive players that Bradford will face should he be drafted, regardless of how high or low he may go in the draft? Jolly, your posting reveals insecurity and a basic lack of knowledge. Bob Stoops and OU fans didn't 'will Sam Bradford back', Sam Bradford willed Sam Bradford back and at the end of the day Sam will be just fine when all this settles down. He needs to get his shoulder taken care of, take a deep breath and realize the wonderful things which still lay if front of him.

Granted--the Sam we saw from last season with all that talent around him is probably a somewhat distorted view of his realistic NFL capabilities, but as I saw it last night--Mel Kuiper still had him projected as the No. 5 pick overall and I believe the first QB taken.

Sam brings a good arm, nice size, excellent vision and unusal smarts, which I know the NFL scouts love. He can absorb a system in a hurry. Look around the current NFL and take notice of all the bad QB play in the league as a whole. It's not like Matthew Stafford and Mark Sanchez have the world by the balls right now--Stafford is hurt and playing on a horrible team in a horrible city and Sanchez is about one more interception away from being benched by Ryan. Either way--sometimes things work out and sometime they don't.

There are no guarantees in life or the NFL...jist ask Vince Young and Matt Leinart. Matt Ryan is the glaring exception.

But this notion of yours that all OU fans and Stoops willed Sam back is nonsense.

Sam just needs to get the surgery, rehab and enjoy the rest of his senior year like an everyday college kid...this season is over.

Even if you knew what you were talking about (you don't),Sam could collect the three million and go to law school and still have a life most would dream of having.

Sam will be fine and real fans in the Sooner Nation realize all of this... message board trolls...I'm not so sure about.

Sam just needs to get the surgery and get the money he can before the NFL finds out how soft he really is. I like the guy, but man he just keeps getting hurt. If he had the toughness of a Farve.... I think Jason White would have been a good NFL QB if not for the two blown knees. Sam needs to learn from Jason's experience and take the money while it's available. Most people never have a chance to make millions of dollars just by signing a contract, Sam will have that opportunity and shouldn't let it pass him by again.
Outlaw, Edmond - Oct 22, 2009 at 10:14 am
The difference with Sam and the other Heisman QBs we've had lately (I include White and Heupel in that) is that Sam could actually play in the NFL. the other 2 were great in college but didn't have a chance in the NFL. Sam actually has a real chance. Landry is a fine QB and in the next couple years may even be a great one, but Sam has a great chance to play on Sundays. The experts moved him down to 5th overall. How that equates to 4th rd I have no idea. He's still listed as the 1st QB overall.
And I may not be as old but I've travelled to a fair share of games, including OU at Alabama in 2003, and the NC title game against LSU that same year

Gee Whiz, I would bet none of you have traveled to as many games as I have over the past 10 years. In other words, I aint not aggie fan. But, I have serious doubts about Sam. And...unless you have stuck your head in the OU sand or drinking the OU Koolaid, the experts are saying the same thing. I hope the kid has a great career. I have serious doubts as to his durability.

OU fans are funny. I was at a game in 1985 when Jerome Brown broke Troy Aikmans ankle. OU was leading the game at the time of the injury. A young punk came in and relieved Troy and OU went on the win the NC. Troy was totally forgotten by the Sooner faithful because the punk delivered them to the promised land. Troy went on to win Super Bowls and inducted in the NFL Hall of Fame. The young punk went on the get arrested every year for something or other. If Landry Jones was as good as Sam, you all would already have forgotten about Sam as well.

Hes gone, he just likes the attention. Thats all he is doing is keeping the cameras on him because he is a glory hog.
Chris - Oct 22, 2009 at 9:50 am
Oh you're right as usual Jolly. I called up Sam and begged him to come back. I sent him emails and text messages too. I camped outside the practice field with a megaphone and chanted "One more year!" No one can tell YOU any different because you know everything. Get over yourself. And if you still think he is getting drafted in the 4th round, you're still an idiot.

Eric it's idiotic to you because you're a myopic fan who can't see the truth because you're blinded by your fandem. It's idiotic because you're one of the selfish fans who willed Sam back this year because you thought there was a championship in the cards. It's idiotic because you can't handle the truth.
Jolly, Edmond - Oct 22, 2009 at 9:38 am
If you think he can't play football again, you are clueless. Read the Tulsa World article with quotes with a top ortho doc and the Tulsa team doctor. It was an aggravation not a re-injury. Bradford could have played through the injury against Texas with a pain injection prior to the game - very common - but Sam elected not to get the injection out of fear he wouldn't feel significant damage. It's all in the Tulsa World article.

Bradford beat Texas his freshman year and has two Big 12 championships with a Heisman. It would have been nice to get a BCS win but it's a nice resume.

If Bradford doesn't get drafted til the 4th round, I'll send you a check for the difference he lost. his arm would have to fall off and he'll have to start throwing left handed for him to go in the 4th round. If you don't like him, that fine, but your statement is idiotic

Jolly, sadly, you might be right. I am having doubts as to whether he will ever throw a pass in the NOT FOR LONG league. At that level, they don't get too emotional in their business decisions.
craig, Oklahoma city - Oct 22, 2009 at 9:20 am
done with football? Are you kidding? he was projected as the #1 overall pick last year, and you don't think he can even play on Sundays ? Maybe you should go replace all the analysts around the country since you know something they don't. Heupel wasn't even projected to get drafted. Heupel is a great coach, but Bradford is by far the better NFL prospect. Yesterday Mel Kiper moved him from #1 overall to #5. Oh no! #5! I guess he'll only get 25 million instead of 30 million. And maybe he won't have to go to the Rams or Cheifs. Sounds like a win-win to me.

Dallas, Minnesota, Carolina and Washington could all be drafting in the 5-15 range and could use a good QB. Take my good friend Steve's advice Sam, "Go on take the money and run, whoo whoo whooo"
Outlaw, Edmond - Oct 22, 2009 at 9:19 am
"one of the finest careers in OU football history." - I don't think so. Based on stats, maybe. But he has never beat Texas, nor won an NC. His stats are based on a 12 game reg. season plus a conference chapmpionship game and a bowl. Back in the day, it was 9 or 10 games a year period. Didn't move to 11 games a year until the 70's.

If he wants to be considered one of the best, then he'll have to come back and earn it.
Preston, Bossier City - Oct 22, 2009 at 9:18 am
Damage is already done. When doubt creeps into the scouts and teams that they've got a QB who's got a bad shoulder he's lucky if he's a 4th round pick. Should of taken the 1st round money last year..but nooooooo...just a plain stupid decision. OU fans can spin it anyway you want...but it cost Sam millions.

craig, Oklahoma city - Oct 22, 2009 at 9:10 am
Sorry, but I don't see him playing on Sunday's. I think he'll be another Heupel, great in college, but not up to pro standards. Especially now that he has a "glass jaw" (shoulder) to further cloud his worth in the NFL. If you recall as I do, the doctors said there was no more chance of him re-injuring his shoulder than there was before it was injured. So, will surgery fix that...no. He is prone to that type of injury and it will likely happen over and over again every time he is sacked on his left side. I love the kid, but I think he's about done with football.

Let's just hope that Sam Bradford doesn't become the next pitchman for Air Comfort Solutions.

I love Sam, and wish him the best in the NFL, but this is now all but officially the landry Jones era.
Jerry, Atlanta - Oct 22, 2009 at 9:03 am
Actually Sean.....I see him more as the "Got Milk?" kind of guy...sort of an updated Josh Heupel....and only a fool with no concept of money thinks of $20 million guaranteed as something not to be concerned about.

Philip, Oklahoma City - Oct 22, 2009 at 8:58 am
Phillip you are a real OU fan.....not everyone is concerned about the 'guaranteed money'. He came to OU to be the best that he could be and he hasnt lived up to his own expectations. He doesnt want to go out as an injury prone QB, I hope that he makes the decision that makes him the most comfortable and when he looks back in 10 years he is STILL happy with his decision that he made. No matter what everyone else says he is that one that has to be happy. Whether it is in Norman selling A/C or somewhere playing football, he is a smart guy and will be a success at what ever he sets out to do !

The kid was doing the exact opposite of what many are criticized about. Playing for money. He took a gamble. The first phase, didn't work out. But the story isn't finished. I think he'll end up in a better situation which is very understated. Listen to Todd McShay, he could fall to the middle of the first round. That could be the Cowboys or their equivalent. So lets see. Boomer Sooner!

Kevin Wilson is not done running the team into the ground. He decided long ago that this year would be a down year for O.U. So his play calling has been the most stupid since the early 1900's when they still did crusty Bob's, chase the cat's tail, and pig in a poke. I think right now O.U. needs a few of those plays. The hurry-up offense has been decoded and it shows. Better slow down and call some plays that take advantage of the current "talent", as it were.
O.U. needs a down year here and then. Back when it played Oklahoma Baptist College they beat them 127 to 0. But when WWI started O.U.'s team was decimated and OBC (now OBU) beat O.U. in a scrimmage.

It's a no brainer, right? Sam, we appreciate everything you've done and even more than that we appreciate your intentions. It obviously just wasn't meant to be. It happens. Get well, rehab work your butt off and you and Jermaine do us proud. Hey at least you didn't end up in Detroit. Boomer Sooner!
eudell, Virginia Beach - Oct 22, 2009 at 8:02 am
Surgery and he's now damaged goods. My advice - take the rest of the season off, rehab, and get it ready for the combine. It's only 3 or 4 months away, and if you go under the knife you won't be ready for 6 months most likely.

I doubt he leaves, he wants his degree. It's not about going out in style, if he wanted that he'd of gone out last year. He understands the importance of getting the education. However I would say if he is going to the NFL then good luck. Hopefully if he does Minnesota will pick him up, and put him in there with AD, and Harvin. I (for one) would love to see that. Best of luck with whatever you decide to do Sammy.
David, Moore - Oct 22, 2009 at 6:37 am
Sam get the surgery its not going to get better and if you play again and get hit again its going to re-injure again. Its a no brainer. Had a similiar injury in hs and it never got better. of course i wasnt a star or starter so was left to fend for myself. Get it taken care of. Unless I am missing something here, now this is getting irritating. I understand if this is not the way Sam wants to go out as nobody wants to be remembered, "this way". People I think for the most part are going to remember Sam as a dang good quarter back whom we all loved. However, with the wrong moves and if he is going to gamble with his place at OU he could be viewed much differently. I dont want to see that. Go out with class while you can Sam. If you want to play in the NFL get the surgery, heck if you want to be able to lift your right arm above your head without pain get the surgery.
Terry, Norman - Oct 22, 2009 at 6:20 am
Sam is greatness. I feel so bad for him and the way things played out this season. As a fan, you can only hope that for the best for him and his future. The pinpoint accuracy he throws with is unreal and I can't wait to watch him on Sundays.
