So why would his planned press conference Wednesday be any different?
Two hours before he was set to make an announcement about his future that was scheduled to be streamed on the university’s Web site and carried live by
ESPN, Bradford canceled the press conference.
"Sam’s whole situation is he’ll have something to say when he knows what his path will be, and that isn’t right now,” said Sooner coach
Bob Stoops, who met with a large media contingent after practice instead of Bradford. "He wasn’t ready to fully answer everything that will want to be asked. And for sure knows what he wants to do just yet, until he visits with a few more people.”
Before it was canceled, all signs pointed to Bradford announcing he was going to have season-ending surgery after he re-aggravated his separated throwing shoulder against
Texas last weekend. One report even surfaced that Bradford had made up his mind on surgery.
Instead, Bradford’s status will remain in limbo, at least for another day.
"What’s going to happen a week from now, three weeks from now, I don’t know,” said quarterbacks coach
Josh Heupel, who also spoke Wednesday. "We’ll have to see as we go down the road.”
Neither Stoops nor Heupel agreed to confirm specifically why the press conference was canceled, though Stoops admitted it was Bradford’s decision alone to call the press conference and then to cancel it.
Stoops noted that Bradford wants "more time to gather more information.” But it’s unclear if Bradford is holding onto hope of playing again this season, or if he needs further evaluation on his shoulder before having it operated on for insurance purposes, or what.
Either way, this is not the kind of speculation anyone envisioned for Bradford after he announced in the winter he was putting off the NFL Draft — despite being a potential top 10 pick — to return for his junior year of college. Six games into the season, the speculation was supposed to be about Bradford’s chances of winning a second
Heisman Trophy and his
Sooners returning to the
BCS National Championship.
"It’s extremely difficult for him, coming back for the right reasons,” Heupel said. "Wanting to have an opportunity to compete for a championship.
"There was a lot of hard work that went into that, so to have it taken away from you when you invest that much, it’s going to be very disappointing.”
But nobody appears ready to turn the page just yet on one of the finest careers in OU football history.
Even if Bradford never plays another down for the Sooners, he’ll own school records for career passing touchdowns, career passing yards and career passing efficiency and a host of other single-game and single-season OU marks.
So while redshirt freshman
Landry Jones prepares for his fourth career start at quarterback Saturday in a pivotal game for the 3-3 Sooners at
Kansas, Sooner Nation will continue to wonder. Waiting for Bradford to announce his next move.
Said Stoops, "Once he feels he’s ready to and knows for sure what he wants to do. ... he will.

Is the coach's seat getting a little hot with all the losses to Texas and all the bowl losses in recent years? If not, it should be. Stoops has shown himself to be a very good coach, but he is far from a great coach. This complete disregard for Sam Bradford's health and future for the sake of a big game (and with 2 losses already, a game that still would have done nothing to get them to the NC) was a barbarously self-centered decision.
Oklahoma should fire Bob Stoops immediately!! This is the perfect opportunity to get rid of a coach that cannot get his team to the top, and is appropriate for such a monstrously inhuman decision.
Hey Jolly. I will look you up on these boards when Sam is taken in the first round. Do you want to retract your comment now or are you really dumb enough to believe that?

Thanks for the memories, Sam. And the championships. Best of luck in the NFL next season.
If that is not the type of feedback Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford is getting from behind closed doors in the Sooners’ football complex, then shame on the coaches. If Bradford is hearing those words in private and ignoring them, shame on Sam for not learning from experience.
Two shoulder injuries into the Sooners’ 3-3 season from hell, it is time for this soap opera to end with its only logical conclusion: The 2008 Heisman Trophy and Davey O’Brien Award winner should declare himself available for the 2010 NFL Draft and begin working immediately to rehabilitate his throwing shoulder — with or without surgery — in anticipation of wowing scouts at the NFL Combine in February.
Oklahoma officials scheduled, then canceled, a Wednesday news conference for Bradford to detail his future plans. In a statement, coach Bob Stoops said Bradford "wants more time to gather information."
Here’s all the information Bradford, or any other rising star on the college landscape, really needs to know: With the potential for labor unrest looming on the NFL horizon, the last guaranteed year under the existing draft system — which handsomely compensates first-round picks to a level teams hope to curtail in the future — will be 2010.
Everyone is counting on a rookie salary cap in 2011, so the time to strike is now if you’re going to maximize your signing bonus as a first-round pick.
Simple solution: Avoid the risk of further injury and cash in now, Sam. Wait any longer and you risk waving goodbye to anything close to the type of deal signed by quarterback Matthew Stafford (six years, $41.7 million), the top overall pick in the 2009 draft.
That spot, and those dollars, could have been Bradford’s in April if he had chosen to leave school early. But he opted to return. While in Fort Worth to pick up his O’Brien Award in February, Bradford said he saw the 2009 season as a chance to "better" his skills with another year of college experience. He also said he wanted another shot to win the national championship that eluded OU in last year’s BCS title game.
"I see us being on the national stage again," Bradford said at the time. "If I didn’t see that, I wouldn’t be coming back."
As things stand today, No. 25 Oklahoma (3-3, 1-1 in Big 12) is out of the national championship race and relegated to long-shot status in its quest for a Big 12 title. Bradford is scheduled to earn his finance degree in December and should use it to make wise investments with the millions he will receive as a first-round pick.
Spending any more time playing behind the Sooners’ patchwork offensive line would be dangerous to his health. That point was driven home Sept. 5 against Brigham Young, when Bradford separated his shoulder on a hit by a blitzing linebacker. It was reinforced Saturday against Texas, when he aggravated the injury on a first-quarter sack. jburch@star-telegram.com
Thus far, injury reports have not cited a need for surgery although Bradford said last week it was "possible." The Web site soonerscoop.com, citing unnamed sources, reported Wednesday that Bradford is scheduled to have surgery Tuesday with Dr. James Andrews, a renowned orthopedic surgeon in Birmingham, Ala. Another site, OUinsider, reported that Bradford is considering surgery as well as the possibility of resting and returning for some late-season games.
Bradford is not talking — yet. But if he’s thinking about taking more snaps for OU this season, behind this sieve of an offensive line, he’s making a mistake. His NFL future is far too valuable for such a risk.
Don’t buy into the bunk that Bradford needs to prove something to NFL general managers about his ability to take a hit. It is true, based on talks with NFL scouts, that teams would like to see him put on more upper-body bulk. But that is easily accomplished without exposing him to more hits at the college level.
Remember: The NFL is the same league that saw the Buffalo Bills spend a first-round pick on running back Willis McGahee while he was recuperating from reconstructive knee surgery after his final college game. If Bradford visits the surgeon in the near future, you can still bank on him being a first-round pick next April.
One day after Bradford’s second shoulder injury, former NFL general manager Charley Casserly told a Sunday audience on CBS’ NFL Today that OU’s quarterback projected as "a top-five pick last year" and the same would hold true today.
Sam, don’t jeopardize that status by taking foolish chances with your long-term health. You’ll always be an Oklahoma legend. But now, it’s time to take things to the next level. The sooner, the better.

encouragement to others, sign autographs. etc. Don't make a soap opera out of you injury.
Just leave, get the surgery or what ever. OU is not a good team with you or without you. Texas and BYU proved that. Baylor was your swan song. The team needs the same guy behind
center every week to salvage this season and look forward to the next. You are not helping
the situation with the team or Jones. Have some respect for your predecessor. Stoops
needs to encourage you to stay out. He has made his share of mistakes with his QB's
over the past 10 season's, don't force him to make another. Don't pull a Favre.
Bob Stoops... do us all a favor and take you and your sorry-a$$ defensive and offensive coordinator and leave town!
Josh Heupel... please stay and become our new Offensive Coordinator!
OU Athletics... please offer Chris Peterson from Boise St. the new head coaching job at OU !!!!!

Ah, I'm sure he'll be fine.
1st pick Matthew Stafford 41.7 million guaranteed
5th pick Mark Sanchez 28 million guaranteed
17th pick Josh Freeman 10.25 million guaranteed
44th pick Pat White 4 years/4.5 million
Despite what I'm reading on here from some--if Sam called me tomorrow and ask me to be his agent--I'd feel pretty good about things in the bigger scheme of things. I think he'll make a living wage.
El Presidente, Deer Creek
RL, yes he has some physical maturing to do. But thats normal for a 21 year old.
Now go and secure your future.
It just comes down to what he feels is right. Because none of this crap that we are all talking about here really matters. he's going to do what is right for him so if he comes back, then we will be glad he's back. If not, we will all be watching him on Sundays, just like we do with Peterson. Its amazing how many new Vikings fans there are in Oklahoma now.
For I HATE OKC, you probably thought Darren Sproles should give up on football too since he's so small and not a 1st round pick. You're an idiot. go back to Texas
How about, move your nary a$$ out of the state and give it a rest. I cannot believe the trash that bad mouth an individual with an injury. You parents must be real proud of you and how you turned out to be such a lump of S!@# in life.
Bradford will be back because he didn't prove anything this season.
Granted--the Sam we saw from last season with all that talent around him is probably a somewhat distorted view of his realistic NFL capabilities, but as I saw it last night--Mel Kuiper still had him projected as the No. 5 pick overall and I believe the first QB taken.
Sam brings a good arm, nice size, excellent vision and unusal smarts, which I know the NFL scouts love. He can absorb a system in a hurry. Look around the current NFL and take notice of all the bad QB play in the league as a whole. It's not like Matthew Stafford and Mark Sanchez have the world by the balls right now--Stafford is hurt and playing on a horrible team in a horrible city and Sanchez is about one more interception away from being benched by Ryan. Either way--sometimes things work out and sometime they don't.
There are no guarantees in life or the NFL...jist ask Vince Young and Matt Leinart. Matt Ryan is the glaring exception.
But this notion of yours that all OU fans and Stoops willed Sam back is nonsense.
Sam just needs to get the surgery, rehab and enjoy the rest of his senior year like an everyday college kid...this season is over.
Even if you knew what you were talking about (you don't),Sam could collect the three million and go to law school and still have a life most would dream of having.
Sam will be fine and real fans in the Sooner Nation realize all of this... message board trolls...I'm not so sure about.
El Presidente, Deer Creek
And I may not be as old but I've travelled to a fair share of games, including OU at Alabama in 2003, and the NC title game against LSU that same year
OU fans are funny. I was at a game in 1985 when Jerome Brown broke Troy Aikmans ankle. OU was leading the game at the time of the injury. A young punk came in and relieved Troy and OU went on the win the NC. Troy was totally forgotten by the Sooner faithful because the punk delivered them to the promised land. Troy went on to win Super Bowls and inducted in the NFL Hall of Fame. The young punk went on the get arrested every year for something or other. If Landry Jones was as good as Sam, you all would already have forgotten about Sam as well.
Bradford beat Texas his freshman year and has two Big 12 championships with a Heisman. It would have been nice to get a BCS win but it's a nice resume.
If Bradford doesn't get drafted til the 4th round, I'll send you a check for the difference he lost. his arm would have to fall off and he'll have to start throwing left handed for him to go in the 4th round. If you don't like him, that fine, but your statement is idiotic
If he wants to be considered one of the best, then he'll have to come back and earn it.
O.U. needs a down year here and then. Back when it played Oklahoma Baptist College they beat them 127 to 0. But when WWI started O.U.'s team was decimated and OBC (now OBU) beat O.U. in a scrimmage.
