Running back tandems: Top rushers and their backups

In college football, even the workhorses are working less because of the two-back system. In 1999, the nation’s top five rushers combined for 1,525 carries during the regular season, while their backups received only 220 carries.
But in 2008, while the nation’s top five rushers combined for 1,466 carries, their backups totaled 371 carries.
