Berry Tramel - Curious NFL draft pick

Apr 27Stephen McGee is a curious pick for the Dallas Cowboys.

Not on the gridiron.

On the golf course.

"We’re getting on the golf course sometime soon,” Bradford said.

"I’m gonna show him some stuff,” Robinson said.

Bradford raised an eyebrow.

"Not really,” Robinson said.

The Oklahoma State quarterback looked at the Oklahoma quarterback as they waited backstage Monday night at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Honors Banquet, and together, they laughed.

A quick warning to Sooners and Cowboys who are faint of heart — you might want to stop reading right here. What you are about to read could be hazardous to your health.

Bradford and Robinson are the faces of their teams, the leaders of the squads and the stars of the moment. They are the young men on opposite sides of the Bedlam battle.

They are also friends.

That’s right — friends.

Bradford agreed to do the FCA event at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in large part because Robinson would be there, and vice versa.

"Once I heard about the opportunity to speak with Sam, I thought it was a great opportunity to come out here and give my testimony,” Robinson said. "I jumped all over it.”

Ditto for Bradford.

"When they came to me and told me — ‘We have this idea; we want you and Zac to come and speak at our state banquet’ — I thought it was a great idea,” he said.

Monday night wasn’t the first time the Bedlam rivals shared their faith together, either. They gave their testimonies earlier this year at Bradford’s church.

It was something they had talked about doing for a year.

"We just hadn’t been able to work out a time,” Robinson said.

What? You guys busy or something?

"Yeah,” Bradford said, "I don’t know why it didn’t work out.”

But really, these two know exactly why. They know the stresses that come with being a major-college quarterback. They know the strains that stem from being a well-known athlete.

Few have that first-hand knowledge like Bradford and Robinson. They live it every day, the good and the bad, the fame and the fishbowl.

Truth is, these two have many more similarities than differences.

"I think that’s why we didn’t stay enemies as a lot of people would think we are,” Bradford said. "We’ve kind of become friends because we’re really similar in our personalities and the way we handle ourselves on and off the field.”

Rival quarterbacks becoming Bedlam buddies isn’t entirely new territory, by the way.

Rhett Bomar and Bobby Reid were pals, a friendship forged the summer before their senior seasons in high school at the EA Sports Elite 11 quarterback camp. From at point on, they had each other on speed dial, a relationship that continued even when the Texas prepsters ended up on the opposite sides of an Oklahoma rivalry.

Reid even drove to Norman to watch the Red-White Game in 2005.

Nowadays, elite athletes are so well-traveled before college that they come to know one another. Add that to today’s technology, and they have no problem staying in touch with MySpace and Facebook, text and Tweets.

So, how did Bradford and Robinson get to know each other?

"We probably met on the field,” Robinson said.

Bradford interrupted.

"We actually met — I don’t know if Zac remembers ... "

The words jogged Robinson’s memory.

Robinson: "Oh, yeah.”

Bradford: "We met a long time ago in high school. We were both at the Oklahoma State camp together.”

Robinson: "I remember that. Yeah. Sam was the tall, skinny kid.”

Bradford rolled his eyes.

"I appreciate that,” he said.

With that, the rifle-armed Sooner and the dual-threat Cowboy were laughing again. They were smiling. They were genuinely enjoying being together.

What’s next?

Human sacrifice. Dogs and cats living together. Mass hysteria.

Sooner and Cowboy fans might think so, but it just isn’t so.

"To be able to talk to Zac about things that we’re both going through,” Bradford said, "it’s been helpful to me.”

Bedlam quarterbacks being friendly — is that allowed?

Robinson smiled and said, "We’re not the ones hitting each other.”

What's so unusual about that? OU and OSU people are neighbors, work together and go to church together and are also friends. We talk smack to each other, but also know it's all in good fun. The same has always been the case between state athletes.

Dave, read the posts. They don't want someone like you tooting their horn. Nor do I support OSU fans who act like you.

This night was about two great guys sharing their faith. FCA helped me get through high school and I believe in that awesome organization. My twelve year old son and his friend witnessed these guys giving their testimonies on Wednesday night. It will make a difference in these two young lives. Thank you to both Sam and Zac!

Dave, you're a pariah that no school wants. Even your own kind is disgusted by you. No matter how many games the school you support wins, normal and decent OU fans won't claim you as one of their own. You will remain the consumate example of a loser and a loner. How you ended up this way I don't know, but your real life must really suck.

In reality, both QBs and both programs are to be commended on the accomplishments of each. Coach Gundy is a good guy. Coach Stoops is a good guy. Former rival coaches Barry Switzer and Pat Jones have always gotten along pretty darn well. Despite what I say and write about the OSU programs and many OSU fans say about the Sooner programs, maybe Bradford and Robinson and Switzer and Jones are right and the rest of us who merely sit in the stands and at our word processors spouting bile should take on those folks' vision of the rivalry.

Oh, football. It brings out the best in people. Especially those who don't or have never played the game. And it can really bring out the exceptional people i.e. Zac and Sam. School rivalries are fun, but I've never really understood the hatred. David Boren's parents are OSU grads. Zac Robinson's dad played for Barry Switzer. I'm sure Mike and Cale Gundy don't hate each other. You guys need to lighten up. This story isn't about YOU.

Great article, I was thinking about trolling, but this article was really good especially it being an FCA function and hearing these two athletes get along on and off the field.
MrBigglesworth, Sweetwater - Apr 28, 2009 at 9:59 am
"ou is ne of the premiere universities in the nation, and OSU is the worst in the world?" ... ROFLMAO!!!

Lets not let the facts get in your way. OSU graduates from both an undergrad and masters program make more money on average then ou graduates. OSU has one of the highest retention rates in the nation. OSU has he largest Student Union in the WORLD. OSU has whats regarded as the best homecoming celebration in the nation. OSU has the third most national championships in the nation. OSU has the states largest public library. OSU has one of the nations best Vet, Orthopedic medicine, and geology programs in the WORLD!

Wow Dave, you really hit the nail on the head with that post. Though I do agree, this is a pathetic article. Little things like this just prove how bias the DOK is. They "try" to put stuff like this out to hide that fact. Besides that, the article is poorly written.

I feel both programs are elite. I am proud of both schools some of my best friends are Cowboy supporters and my daughter attends OU. Dave, OKC. you are an embarrassment to OU. But I've also encountered OSU fans that we're just as embarrassing. Sad to say every school or organization has them. All we can do as fans is ignore them and try to show some personal class by our own actions. Good Luck to both programs and Good Luck to Sam and Zac you're both very special men and I for one am thankful that you both chose to play football in Oklahoma Thanks

I have always found it hard to root for OSU along side my Sooners... until last year. Our season tickets are on the South goal line and two years ago we held OSU (I beleive) on a 4th and goal where Zac got the livin' &%$# knocked out of him. I became a fan that day because of his toughness. BOOMER SOONER!!

I find it refreshing that football would be down the list of things most important in life to both these young men. Faith, family, health, etc, then football. Football is fun and great but it really doesn't mean a whole in the grand scheme of things at the end of the day.

Dave and other OU fans like him, please get over yourself and your hateful obsession to your university. Look there is nothing wrong with loving OU (I for one do not miss a game), there is nothing wrong with getting mad at or about OSU in the context of a football game, but off the field it is OKAY to have friends that are from OSU or even, shocker, Texas. I for one have many good friends from both institutions. I think this article is great because it shows that college football rivalry is one thing but in the larger picture of the world and especially for good causes there is a time to put such things aside. I for one would be okay if Bradford did the same thing with Colt McCoy. The McCoys are a great family and he is also a good witness to other athletes out there. Now I will hate his guts when he throws a TD pass in the Red River Shootout, but I will not piss on him if he comes to talk to my church or other HS athletes about faith in Christ. There is a difference. The sooner that people see that the sooner that certain OU fans will stop sounding so immature and just plain embarrassing to us fans who love our school but also try to be decent human beings.
David, Yukon - Apr 28, 2009 at 1:38 am
I think this article sucks, because I'm an OU grad (Sooner born and bred, baby!) and I hate when OSU is ever mentioned alongside my glorious alma mater. Sooners are too distinguished to be even photographed alongside those pitiful Okie aggies.
