Make 'em play catch-up

NORMAN — Oklahoma wideout Manny Johnson said it simply, yet succinctly:

"When you score on that first drive, they’re playing catch-up.”

This season, OU has put opponents in rally mode every game, every time from the Sooners’ opening possession.

Staggering stat: OU has outscored its five victims 103-3 in the first quarter.

The Sooners struck for touchdowns on their first possession in each game and on at least its first two drives four times.

That’s a trend they carry — and would love to continue — into the Cotton Bowl against Texas.

"We really like to come out fast,” said center Jon Cooper, "and that’s what we want to do every game, come out and get our tempo set and run our offense and get some good momentum for the game.”

With the move to the no-huddle offense, the Sooners are dictating tempo.

Quick to the line. Quick counts. Quick hits.

Quick leads.

For teams in more of a mood to set their feet and ease into the fray — like Baylor last week — the result can be fatal.

"It’s an advantage, a huge advantage,” said Sooner tackle Phil Loadholt.
