Police responded to a 911 hang-up about 1:20 a.m. at an apartment complex at 622 N Park, police Cpl. Dan Shumaker said. A woman told police her neighbor, Russell Thomas McCann, 40, tried to break into her apartment with a knife.

When police knocked on McCann’s door, he answered holding a knife, Shumaker said. Officers instructed McCann to drop the knife and when McCann lunged at officers, he was shot twice.

McCann died at the scene. The officer who shot him is on administrative leave.

Shumaker said McCann had been in custody twice in the past six months for mental evaluations. He had a felony arrest stemming from a 2007 incident where he threw blood on a police officer, Shumaker said. Court records indicate McCann pleaded guilty to a charge of "transferring bodily fluids on government employee.”
