Police: Kadyrov assassination attempt averted
Published: October 23, 2009
MOSCOW (AP) — Russian security forces on Friday foiled an attempt on the life of Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov, the republic's Interior Ministry said.
A sniper shot and killed the driver of a vehicle that was speeding toward a construction site where Kadyrov was expected to appear later in the day, the Chechen Interior Ministry said.
Kadyrov at the time was not in the vicinity of the construction site in the Chechen capital Grozny, police said.
The vehicle carried a container with wires attached, they said.
The Interfax news agency later cited local police as saying plastic explosives were found inside the vehicle, which was towed to a clay quarry where it was safely detonated.
Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, the president of the neighboring Ingushetia region, barely survived an assassination attempt earlier this year.
Russia's North Caucasus region is plagued with violence linked to Islamist separatists.
