And not just on the scoreboard, which blared the good news of a 56-28 rout of Texas A&M.
Here’s the progress. The Cowboys wiped out one of the thorns in their flesh with an off night from their offense.
That’s not a recommended recipe for OSU, not with fourth-ranked Missouri waiting next Saturday at Faurot Field.
The Cowboys spanked A&M with a dizzying array of big plays by Dez Bryant, who is quickly approaching superstar status, and five takeaways by a defense that grew some fangs.
But OSU’s running game sputtered and quarterback Zac Robinson seemed out of sync, at least in the first half. That’s an uh-oh going to Columbia, where the way to beat the high-flying Tigers is to score on every possession and hope you have the ball at the end of the game.
The Cowboys rushed for just 65 yards in the first half, though they finished with 215 after a strong fourth quarter. And that against a defense that ranked 115th nationally against the run.
Saturday night, OSU 11 times needed one or two yards for a first down. It converted just five.
We had come to expect much more from an OSU ground game that through September led the nation in rushing, 340 yards a game.
Meanwhile, Robinson’s numbers were solid — 10-of-13 passing for 186 yards; 66 rushing yards on 15 carries — but he played sluggish. Poor passes. A few fumbles.
Not to say this offense seemed unstoppable, but you certainly didn’t expect the woebegotten Aggies to put on the brakes. This isn’t the Wrecking Crew of old.
But it’s a fabulous sign of progress that the Cowboys can double up the Ags and know there’s lots of room for improvement.
In truth, the victory was sweet, style points be damned. A&M had won 10 of the 12 meetings since the Big 12 formed, including one-point verdicts each of the last two years that kept OSU seasons mired in the mediocrity range.
When Cowboy defensive end Ugo Chinasa set the tone early with a 35-yard fumble return, followed by a 6-yard interception return for a touchdown, you figured the rout was on.
OSU produced five takeaways in the first half alone, a ridiculous number usually achieved only with the help of Arby’s.
Then Bryant got in the groove. A 29-yard touchdown catch. A dazzling 78-yard punt return that will be a highlight for years to come. TD catches of 23 and 21 yards.
A rousing night for an OSU team that will take a 5-0 record and a top-20 ranking into a game at Missouri that will be one of the three or four best showdowns in America.
But the Cowboys have to have their running breeches on, and Robinson has to play at the very top of his game for OSU-Mizzou to live up to such billing.

i think the bandwagon went to pick up some longhorns. i've never seen so many texas fans as the last couple years. as for the "poke", i think we're back to jacob and his spouse/goat. just a guess, but i think i'm pretty close. i think they've actually sold out that stadium. t. boone bought all of the extra tickets and put cardboard cutouts of pistol pete in each seat so he could try to convince espn that the cowjokes are legit.
When osu scores a touchdown, I notice people waving one arm, how does that tie into the whole cowboy theme? Ir looka like the fans are making fun of people that have had strokes! Since Jacob from Kansas sucks balls, and I am on a roll here, lets talk about that picture of the osu quarterback and the two male fans,seen just above. Now that all of you have scrolled up and now back down again, it looks like the quarterback and the hippy are discussing what comes after the number 4 the redneck in the background is totally blown away with the concept. I think the conversation is leaning toward the fact that osu will probably be fifth in the Big12 south.

My questions to the OU fans that post in the OSU sections all the time, is why do you care? If your team is so great and will win yet another national championship, I would think that you would be making plans to attend the championship game. Why did you become an OU fan? Does the constant jabs at OSU make you feel bigger and better about yourself? I would think that you would be more concerned about the Texas game, as it is the first team that you will face that is equal to yours. And you get to use the hook 'em horns hand signal and t-shirts that say beat Texas, and put a longhorn sticker upside down on your car that you do any way year round.

It will be quite a challenge to go into Columbia and beat Mizzou and it would indeed be a major upset in the eyes of all college football fans including OSU fans. After all, if the polls really mean anything, OSU is only ranked 17th compared to Mizzou at #3 at home, so it should be considered an upset. OU deserves the #1 ranking for now, they have clearly played the best of any team in the country so far this year. If they continue to win every game, they should be ranked #1. I do know this though....I am a LONGHORN fan this weekend along with being a COWBOY fan. Good luck Pokes in Columbia and GO TEXAS...shut these gooners mouths at least for a week.

JJ, to answer your question. Who had the toughest schedule in the country last season? OSU. Who is playing Georgia first game next season? OSU. Houston went to a bowl game last year (just like Cincy) and we played them this season. Good comparisons, you moron. Keep them up. I am pretty sure JJ and Carl and Likesmen all kiss each other.
James, what makes you think Baylor is better than A&M? Or is that your opinion? I have no problem with you, just with likesmen and other bandwagon loser OU fans. You seem to not be that way. You should however be sad to see losers like JJ and likesmen try to act like they are fans of OU.
JJ if you are going to make the argument that OU makes their schedule in advance and its not their fault that teams are not as good as they were when the decision was made, you have to give the same courtesy to OSU. Washington St has been a very solid team (especially in the state of Washington) for years. OSU cannot be blamed for the fact that they got a new coach and are in total rebuilding mode (just like Miami was last year). The bottom line is very few OSU fans are claiming national champions or anything like that, but are nearly excited for a team that is very fun to watch and could compete and possibly beat anyone. This is a good football team, with quite a few stars. You OU fans are either really upset about that fact hence the backlash or you are in complete denial. I hope its the latter and it includes your own football team. I can promise you that OU does not see OSU as a weak opponent, but if they do they will get beaten.
Jacob, TCU and Cincy were respectable. And I never said anything about OU. I personally don't think OU will get to a NC game. They're special teams are poor and it'll eventually get them beat. All I'm saying is that beating A&M is like beating Troy or Washington State - it's not a step up in competition. And yes, Baylor is better than A&M, and OU played them in Waco, so there.
OSU fans that say OU has not played anybody this year. Are all of OSU fans pleased with your #17 ranking? Never mind I know the answer to that, you think you should be ranked higher. I am going to give a small little fact. Cincinnati was ranked #17 at the beginning of the year, some how they got moved out of the top 25 with out playing anybody, their first game was against OU. If OSU is a somebody ranked at #17, then I guess Cinci was too. I agree OU had a weak schedule, but OSU's was weaker, everybody did except Alabama, that is how they moved up so quickly. A&M was the better team last year between themselves and Baylor, but this year Baylor should stomp A&M. Now that the cream puff portion of our schedules is over, now we can see who is the better team. I hope OSU's defense can stop Mizzou, but I doubt it. Prediction, Mizzou 76 OSU 54, yes it is going to be a high scoring game, neither team has a defense
Bobby, you are an idiot. OU schedules a team every year that should be a top team. Unfortunately, since many of these contracts are signed years in advance there is no way to know if the team will still be good. Last year Miami was not as good as they should have been. When OU goes to Miami for the return game Miami may be good. This year OU played Washington and when the game was scheduled they were pretty decent. OU has already scheduled games to play with Notre Dame. RIght now they stink but by the time the game comes around they could be a top 5 team. You never know. Its kind of like when the lOSUrs scheduled Troy they probably thought they would stink and Troy whipped OSUcks last year. This year they got the team they thought they were scheduling.....a cupcake.
JJ, after some looking, I did verify that TCU made to 24 for one week. Big deal. When UO belly's up to the bar like Ohio State and USC, then you got something to brag about. You want to brag about national contention, don't wait until after News Year day to play some of those teams. Step up and see what you got instead of trying to convince the rest of what you are. Real power houses don't have to convince anyone on these comment boards.
OU played Cincy, which was a bowl team last year and would have been good again this year had OU not ended their season by taking out their starting QB. OU has also played a Top 25 team in TCU. So, please don't act like OU has not played anyone. OU will continue to win and OSU will now see what happens when you try to play with big teams when your belly is full of cupcakes. They'll puke all over their uniforms when they play quality opponents.
First of all, I am Sooner Born, Sooner Bred , when I die I'll be Sooner Dead. However, I am happy for OSU! Ideally, OU and OSU are undefeated going into the last game of the year. Honestly, I don't think it will happen, but if it does more power to you(OSU). Good luck against Mizzou! Boomer Sooner!
And the only reason you say we are fans of the wrong team is because you never went to OU. You just became a fan after you graduated from Cameron and they won the NC in 2000. When OU gets beat by anyone it is usually called an "upset" when osu gets beat by anyone it is usually called "expected" When OU beats a very good team it is usually called "expected" when osu beats a very good team "the opposing coach usually gets fired". The sad thing here is, the parents of those poor misguided children! Correct me if I'm wrong (and I'm sure the OU "fans" will!), but the Sooners were the cheaters during the Land Runs, right? They snuck across the starting lines under the cover of night to stake out(steal) the prime spots and then popped out when the Land Run started to act like they'd done things the right way.
I don't live in Oklahoma anymore and when I read the OSU bashing like I've seen on this site today, it makes me glad. Jeez....can't anybody be happy for someone else doing well? I always tell my students that EVERYONE is entitled to their own opinion and to like who they like -- but don't try to cram your opposing opinion down everyone else's throats or make fun of them. People take it for what it is, like I said, when Ou fans don't get the attention and respect they demand then all hell breaks loose. If they lose to some one they don't like then that team, their fans and the place they are located is low class, no good and trash. If they lose in a close game then it's, "they were a good team an we give them credit for that" then the trash talk starts. They always brag on themselves as being the best most respectful fans, the best at this and that, and they always point out anything and everything that is good about themselves, but don't beat them and don't slight them of the praise they demand or the real picture of who they really are WILL come out. It is the way Ou fans have always been and the way they will always be.

By the way, Jacob...did you know the LANDRUN was started in Stillwater, of ALL places? Who was the genius that came up with the nickname of Sooners for the University of Oklahoma, knowing that everything having to do with that name was based in Stillwater? Wowzer.
Of course we are excited about a win against A&M. Are all of you Sooner fans trying to say you weren't excited about a win against Baylor? Have respect for your other teams in this state. You try to bring OSU fans down when they are happy about something, but all you are doing is making a fool of yourself when nobody even had any negativity towards you to begin with. Do everyone a favor, and stop being Negative Nancy when someone is happy about something. Jesus.
Jacob likesmen, I know Oklahoma history, but I don't remember those covered wagons being pulled by tiny little ponies. Also, your list of things that you want OSU to do is absurd. Why should OSU leave the Big XII? You do realize that there are more sports than just football right? Besides are you saying that you have to win 8-9 games a year to be allowed to stay in the Big XII? If thats the case there a lot of schools that have to go. Oh, and why is OSU a terrible place to play sports again? Please enlighten us. I have been to both Stillwater and Norman, and Norman isn't the nicest place itself. One last thing, who has one the Bedlam trophy the last few years?
The reason for all this OSU bashing and the viciousness that has increased 10 fold is the fact that Ou can't stand any of the national spotlight being turned away from them. They exist only for their self praise. It's time to face the fact Ou, you are not the only game in town anymore! It is that simple.

Man, OSU haters are in full force today. That must mean OSU is doing something right. I love seeing them getting all wound up! The score way not reflect this, but the defense really came though. Missouri will be the toughest test yet for the Cowboys. Should be a great game and a great weekend next week.
Jeff, you certainly don't help us Sooner fans that detest everything osu, so Jeff you stay on your side of the fence and I will stay on my side. If you all want me to go away, this is what you have to do. 1. go to a lesser conference, we could have a good team like TCU. 2. admit that osu is a terrible place to play sports. 3. Rent out Booger Pickens Stadium so UCO can have a nicer place to play. This is very simple people do these things and you can all feel better about osu athletics.

Although A&M's season hasn't been much so far, there are some things to consider. They have a new head coach. It often takes teams time to adjust. But A&M has good athletes. Over the last five years, in recruiting class rankings A&M is more or less top 20 - top 25. Teams can improve over a season. A&M came in this game with conference-game motivation and Big 12 South caliber athletes. They wanted to win bad and it's not so surprising A&M would come into this game and look in some ways like they were starting to find themselves. But the OSU defense took all that away from them. And then the OSU offense kept it away from them. In my opinion, this OSU win was a better one, even a definitely better one, than maybe it might look on paper to some people. A&M beat Texas last year. It's not like they don't have some guys on that team that can play ... And it's not like OSU can't go up to Columbia and give Missouri all it wants and more either. They're good. But so is OSU.
Good points KR but for likesmen it's not even about OU being better than OSU. Look at his posts. They are never about the fact that OU is good, that would be fine, it's always about how bad OSU is and how much our fans suck. I'm not even sure the guy is an OU fan. He's just some dude that has nothing better to do with his day.
Jacob likes men, you like to make fun of OSU for coming out of a cattle gate, yet OU has two little ponies run around pulling around a couple of milk maids. What a joke. Every week OU fans talk about how OSU sucks, and yet they just keep putting up 50+ points. Of course A&M put up a lot of yards they were down by 3 TDs the ENTIRE game. Has OSU played anyone real tough, no not really but neither has OU. Both teams are about to actually get tested next week. Why don't you wait until you all are done ripping scrotums off of Texas fans and for both teams to play a tough game before you trash talk.
Get ready Cowboy fans because the hate comments are only going to get worse the more we improve. Guys like Jacob in Kansas likesmen, JJ, mike from edmond, and several other OSU haters will just turn up the hate as we continue to win. It's pretty sad that these guys feel it neccessary to put down others so they can feel better about themselves. Let's all hope that OSU and OU are undefeated going into Bedlam! WOW! What a way to start a Sunday. First off, congrats to the Pokes for winning big with the O struggling in the first half. I don't think the article was too bad. Tramel is usually pretty good and does a mostly good job of being impartial when you consider the way the entire paper is slanted. As for all the uo fans lurking on here, why are you here? This is an article about an OSU game and OSU fans want to celebrate the progress our team seems to be making. If we want to drink the orange Kool-Aid it's fine. No one was uo bashing until you db's started your ridiculous talk about how bad OSU is. You call us delusional? You are the ones putting us on par with lower level D-1 teams that we have beaten SOUNDLY. Neither team has faced a tough schedule this season and both will still have some work to do to reach our goals. No one truly expects OSU to win the MNC this year but our offense will at least give us a puncher's chance to hang close and possibly spring some upsets. 8-4 is a very reasonable and attainable record for OSU and if things fall our way we might be able to move up to 9 or 10 wins. We can play with anyone in the league, we've shown that over the last couple years. The key will be to finish those games off, and until we do we can't expect to win them. I'll be cheering my ass off for the Pokes the rest of the season, and hopefully they'll be able to take care of the games they should win and surprise a team or 2 on the road to improve their standing. Anyone who claims to know college football should know that comparing yards, scores, or anything else between games is usually way off base. Our O had a so-so game and most of atm's yards came on 1 big run and 2 drives against our 2nd team D. Maybe I should ask if any of you land thieves actually listened to the game instead, then you might be aware of that. Continue celebrating Poke fans, hopefully we'll have more to celebrate next week. uo, keep talking trash, it only proves that you're getting scared. If OSU were truly as bad as you claim, you wouldn't care what we do now would you? Also, maybe some of you uo fans should have actually gone to school, then you might know the difference between there, their and they're and how to use them :) Go Pokes and pass the kool-aid!

Jonah, that is a good name from the Bible, I like it, but I don't like the way you think, news flash! I dont follow the gayhawks and my name should have gave that away! The real Jacob from Kansas attacks innocent OU fans that are on here posting the truth about osu, he attacks them on a personal note, therefore I came up with this name to help keep Jacob in his place. I defend innocent OU fans from attack by arrogant osu fans. Jonah I know you are confused and misinformed like the rest of the osu fans, but with help from me and the rest of the good OU fans here, we can help you get rid of that orange way of thinking.

I don't live in Oklahoma anymore and when I read the OSU bashing like I've seen on this site today, it makes me glad. Jeez....can't anybody be happy for someone else doing well? I always tell my students that EVERYONE is entitled to their own opinion and to like who they like -- but don't try to cram your opposing opinion down everyone else's throats or make fun of them.
