OU-Texas ticket demand down

NORMAN — When Oklahoma and Texas take the field every October, the result is usually a fat payday for Web sites that charge more than face value for admission to the rivalry game. But a big "2” in the Sooners’ loss column has made that payday a bit more slender this season.

Texas-Oklahoma tickets are one of the premier tickets of the scalper’s season. But after OU lost to Miami, ticket supply on the ticket search engine FanSnap.com went up from 5,800 listings to 7,100 listings in just days.

As a result, the average price dropped. In late September, a ticket to the annual Big 12 South matchup cost an average of $530. Monday morning, the mean was $375.

"Oklahoma’s two losses are making it a bit easier to get in this year,” Nichole Rozendaal said in an e-mail. Rozendaal works for FanSnap.com, which collects ticket information from over 50 local and national online brokers.

Five days before the game, there are still 5,000 tickets available online, with the lowest-priced tickets at around $175.

Texas fan Sam Melendrez wants one of those tickets, but posted an ad on Craigslist, the online classifieds Web site, in hopes of seeing a fourth Longhorn win in five seasons at the Texas State Fair.

"I go every year,” said the 39-year old salesman from Dallas.

In his ad, Melendrez says he’s willing to pay $125 for a ticket.

"I’d pay double that if they were both undefeated,” he said. "But this year, there’s no interest from OU’s fan base. They don’t care about going because they know they can’t win the national championship.”

The highest-priced tickets on StubHub.com, a premium ticket site, are set at $2,800, which seemed more reasonable in August, when both teams were in college football’s top three.

Less than two months later, although sold out, the epic sequel to the two teams’ 45-35 duel a season ago has only a fraction of the intrigue it once did.

NBC affiliate in Dallas just today said that Stubhub.com says this years ticket is the highest ever @ $393. Maybe you ping more than one source before writing a column such as this?

I would've expected the same as what the article has suggested but it's not what I'm actually encountering in perusing the web brokers for tickets. My personal interest, or rather expense I'm willing to pay, has gone down with OU's losses but I've been eyeing ticket prices both before BYU, after BYU, after Miami up through this week and I've not seen any substantial drop in what sellers are asking. Now I've only been following prices for tickets near midfield in either upper or lower sections but the asking prices have been no less and in most cases more than what I paid to go to last year's games (same process, from a web broker). So maybe the endzone seats had a substantial drop-off but unfortunately, for the seats I'm interested in, it didn't happen. Now I just have to decide if I want to pay to watch it in person or watch it on TV. My superstition says to stay at home. I don't know the last time I attended the game in person that we actually won.

The TX fans are still paying top dollar for tickets on the TX side. I hope they lose so they can also feel the pain of spending all of that extra money thinking that they will be a lock to win this game. Tickets on the OU side are definitely selling for less.

Although Jerry's Death Star is very, very nice, its not a college stadium. I went to the BYU debacle. I have to say it was not a college-like environment. There is something wrong with the acoustics in that stadium such that you can't hear the band or the chants. It was just weird. I hope they never play there again, well except for the big 12 championship at least.

How long can this game possibly last at the Cotton Bowl before Jerry sinks his teeth into it? Hopefully a long time, but probably not.
