NORMAN — The Oklahoma Gas and Electric Co. and the University of Oklahoma announced today that the university will purchase 100 percent of its energy from wind power by 2013.

"It is our patriotic duty as Americans to help our country achieve energy independence," said OU President David Boren.

The plan will include OG&E-funded scholarships and sponsored events on campus, and an annual hedge fund tied to OU’s energy consumption.

OU wants to buy more of its energy from renewable sources like wind power and sell carbon credits in markets such as the Chicago Climate Exchange.

The initiative to provide more renewable energy programs at OU is aligned with the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. Last year, OU President David Boren signed the agreement, which calls on colleges and universities to initiate plans to “achieve climate neutrality as soon as possible.”

The agreement has been signed by more than 150 college presidents.

Desiderious, the Confederate flag remains noticeably absent from our 14 Flags Plaza; has the klan guy's name ever been removed from OU's science hall? Of course it's old news. Wasn't that structure built in like the 20's or 30's?

Does not all of the electricity generated go into the same transmission lines? Wind, coal, nat gas it all ends up at the users end. One cannot "purchase" wind energy through the transmission system. One would have to have their own wind turbines and transmission system. Seems to me it's just OU's PR arm in motion once again.

Kevin: true, but that is really old news! The University will tell you straight so please don't treat this as something new and neato!

What? The Joklahoman pulled my remark about the science hall at OU named after the KKK Grand Wizard? Couldn't handle a historical fact, or don't want to acknowledge that dark bit of OU's history?

Exactly what do "homos" look like, Harry? I want to make sure I dress appropriately tomorrow.

It sounded pretty legit until the part about buying carbon credits. Algore must be laughing all the way to bank. Mr. Boren should just stick to writing letters to the NCAA complaining about referees.

I since a little jealousy from some poor aggies. Sorry you guys can't keep a president around. Look at OU's growth in academics, research, physical campus, and on and on. This is what happens with great, long-term leadership. Maybe OSU can get there someday.

I'm surprised they have not yet found a way to utilize the hot air spewing forth from OU's admin building...

Since O.U. generates just about all its energy needs on campus, it must be about wind energy. I would hope that O.U. still maintains some local capacity because when Norman experiences an outage, O.U. is still always on line. But, Boren could also turn off everything and tell the campus to go out and buy oil lamps.
