OU Notebook: 12-round decision: Longhorns

Published: October 13, 2008

Two ranked teams. Plenty of haymaker plays. One squad left standing.

Sooners offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson likened the latest edition of the Red River Rivalry to a heavyweight fight, lost when Texas managed a late flurry.

"It was a couple of big heavyweights, going toe-to-toe, exchanging punches,” Wilson said. "They got a couple of punches in and we couldn’t answer.”

Stat check
Both the Sooners and Longhorns carried no-huddle spread offenses into the game, although each went about things at a different pace.

In the end, it made for an intriguing set of stats.

Texas finished with a major time of possession edge: 37:10 to 22:50. Yet in their almost 15 minutes more of time with the ball, the Longhorns ran just three plays more than the Sooners, 70-67.

Which is it?
Texas coach Mack Brown recalled a conflicted conversation he had with a friend in trying to describe what kind of game would unfold at the Cotton Bowl.

"Someone asked me if it would be a shootout,” said Brown, "and I said, ‘Boy, I don’t know, you’re talking about two really good defenses.

"They said, ‘So you think it will be hard to score?’ I said, ‘Boy, I don’t know, those are two really good offenses.’”

Shootout won out, with the 80 combined points the most in the history of the storied series.

Lewis on the spot
Sooner linebacker Travis Lewis produced a 19-tackle day, then nailed another target in playing prophet with the latest rankings.

"Losing to Texas, the No. 5 team in the nation,” Lewis said, "I think the voters are going to see that and hopefully be on our side.”

Despite the loss, OU slipped just three spots from No. 1 to No. 4.

On the bright side...
OU defensive coordinator Brent Venables said Texas quarterback Colt McCoy’s big day did not come at the expense of Sooner cornerbacks Brian Jackson and Dominique Franks.

"They played well, outside of maybe one ball for each guy,” Venables said. "They’ve continued to play really well for the most part.”

Head Coaches, regardless of their skill in either area (OC or DC), have very little influence on those particular areas because they focus on the overall team. Bob's defense (he was a great DC) isn't too hot now is it? Look at any other school that has a HC that was dynamite on either side as a coordinator. Chances are, their respective "units" aren't performing as well as when the HC was the coordinator. There are exceptions (Leach calls plays at Tech, I believe) but for the most part, this is true.

Do you really want stoops to leave? Some of you idiots dont remember the Gibbs, Schnelly and Blake years. Come on, we lost to a very good team, we are a very good team. Really people, who do you want as coach, tommy bowden? Phillip Fulmer?

Regarding Mike Stoops, I watched, live and in-person, his Wildcats get beat by Stanford. His D did not look so good, and this was against a smaller, slower, but smarter, team. Mike is great and I'd love to have him back, but he's not the Messiah of Defense.

Venables or should he change his name to Vunrables. Our defense has not improved any under him. What kind of game plan did he come up with - catch and release? We'll not win a NC until he goes - just like long they are being carried by outstanding talent.

Once again the Sooners come into a big game situation and looked so unprepared (like the last four BCS games). Maybe it is time for Stoops and gang to find another team to coach. Each year Sports analysists talk about how good Oklahoma teams are and each year they seem to fail to win the big one (like the last four BCS games)

And I wish you would all stop talking about a Sooner-Longhorn rematch in Miami. I would hate for you to get your hopes up. In 2006, the two supposedly best team in the country were Ohio State and Michigan. Ohio State won a wild game by 1 point in Columbus leading many to fight for rematch in the National Title. Nevermind both teams got blown out in its bowl game to Florida and USC.

Voters will never put two teams from the same conference in the national title even if they were obviously, unarguably the two best teams in college football. It won't happen.

He got hit in the stomach. Learn some football? Maybe you should go back and watch some film. Block in the back behind, not on the side or in front. No player got pushed down from behind. There would be a lot more complaining from Sooner Nation had there been one on that play. I've seen a whole two people respond to that. It was a good play. OU couldn't stop it. End of story. Making excuses doesn't change that "L" to a "W."

And I was mistaken. The faked punt ended in a field goal for Texas, not a touchdown. The touchdown I was referring to was on the drive prior to the punt fake. So that was only a 3 point swing instead of 7.

Maybe this year we can skip the big 12 championship game and worry about winning the national championship. Who knows maybe there will be a rematch down in Miami.

there was a block in the back Zach. Learn some football. At the 30 yard line Jackson gets blocked in the back opening a hole for Shipley to run through full speed.

Finally, OU's defense played GREAT until Reynolds injury. If you read earlier articles, both Clayton and Lewis gave him UNBELIEVABLE credit for making sure they were in the right place at the right time. He was the unquestioned leader of that OU defense and his injury deflated them. Jackson and Franks made play after play for the Sooner defense. Texas deep threat was nonexistent against OU. Plays went for 10, 12 yards at a time...that's linebacker territory, not secondary. And most of those plays came after Reynolds went out. And Kevin Wilson kept OU scoring the entire game.

So I ask, how is it the coaches fault? The leader wasn't on the field most of the second half and Colt McCoy is TWICE the quarterback he gets credit for. He's a fighter and a competitor. Not coming up with an interception isn't bad for the Sooner defense, but all the tipped balls they got was great for such a tremendous quarterback. That being said, Texas doesn't exactly have crap coaches. Wil Muschamp is the same person who came up with the scheme that beat OU in the national title in 2003 and kept Auburn's defense one of the country's best for years. And Texas' offensive coordinator has put together some of the most explosive offenses in college football year in and year out.

And there were NO blockin the back calls on that kickoff. They showed the replay at least 10 times during the game...every block was clean. But what they did show was an illegal blocker down-field on two consecutive plays for OU. That drive ended in 7 for OU.

You'd figure such and "avid" OU fan could see when OU was just outplayed. The refs sucked, no lie there, but it was for both teams, not just one. OU doesn't win this game by three touchdowns in Norman with good refs. Give Texas some credit. I hate them as much as anyone, but good Lord...be a fan, not a spectator that comes up with excuses.

Mark, turn off your TV and read box scores. The "zebras" made just as many bad calls on both sides of the ball. The two "late hit" calls and the "dropped" interception cost OU a whole 10 points. And the faked punt on Stoops call probably cost OU 7. But at the same point, two bad calls, one a touchdown and the other a "roughing the punter" call ended in Sooner touchdowns. The play that decided the game was the kickoff return for a touchdown and the 60-yard run late in the 4th with Texas leading. The refs didn't decide this game.

As for as the people calling coaches stupid - this does to me sound like the crybaby bandwagon fans that all jumped on board in 2000. Texas was/is a tough football team and we got tested, our QB on defense got hurt and the defense was tired and unsettled. Never a good formula against a team with an offense the caliber of Texas.

All that being said it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that our kickoff coverage is really not the problem. It's the kicker. People keep making comments about not kicking it deep enough, well yeah thats part of it but the main thing I see is not kicking it high enough to give the coverage team time to make the play. As things are right now even if the opponent's return man makes the catch at the 2 yard line, the kicks are such line drives that the returner already is at full speed by the time our coverage gets there and they have already over-ran him. At that point the return man has a great advantage. Cheer up people we are still #4 in the nation, have a great QB, and if we can shore up our defense and get this KR problem under control this team can still finish near the top.

OU defense has not been as dominating since Mike went to Arizona. Just an observation. Brent is pretty good, but when he and Mike where together, they were outstanding!(2 minds are better than 1) The one thing that really sticks out is the glaring lack of Kickoff coverage. I believe that cost us the game. OU helped Texas back up after delivering a solid left hook.

If Texas and OU win out or if texas finishes with one loss and play in big XII title game OU could play texas for the National Championship.......There has definately been stranger occurances than that this year in college football.

Not a bandwagon fan either, but I find it hard to smile about losses. Seriously, what fan likes or feels good if their team losses.

Jerry-- finally a guy with some common sense. I couldn't agree with you more. I cannot stand OU fans. I am a diehard but these bandwagon fairweather people kill me. If winning were so easy, how did USC lose to Oregon State? I guess LSU should fire Les Miles, and I'm sure that Pinkel is gone in Mizzou as well. C'mon people, wake up! Support the Sooners and coaches or go find another team to degrade. You don't deserve to be a Sooner fan!

I think we were fortunate to only drop 3 spots in the AP poll so it doesn't concern me. What does concern me is that we are now behind Texas in the race for the Big 12 CCG. We won't be going to Miami if we can't even get to the Big 12 Champoinship game. Fortunately, Texas still has a tough schedule.

Calling the coaches "stupid" every time they lose a rare game at Oklahoma is very STUPID, childish, pathetic and moronic. Grow up fairweather fans! Better yet why don't you stay off the bandwagon when we're winning?

Kelly - There is no doubt the two things Texas had the most success with was the passing game in the middle of the field and McCoy's feet. The corners played well enough to win, had we held our own in the middle and contained McCoy.

Venables and Wilson are stoopid. Ray Charles, Helen Keller and Stevie Wonder could have seen what happened, no blocking, no running game, and the defense when Reynolds went down.

Which game did you watch Brent? Texas had fun with Jackson all day. Don't recall seeing any picks from either player. Playing "well" gets the job done against teams of the same caliber as the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Usually falls short when you're trying to win against Texas et al. I hope they play better than "well" against our remaining opponents.
