OU football notebook: Special teams impress

Although the offense sputtered for most of the game without its three best playmakers, the special teams units nearly proved the difference.

Kicker Jimmy Stevens was perfect on the evening, nailing a pair of field goals and a pair of extra points. Freshman punter Tress Way averaged more than 50 yards per punt.

Special teams impress

And junior Dominique Franks set up Oklahoma’s final scoring drive with a winding return after fielding the ball on his own 1-yard line.

"There were a lot of areas that were very good,” said coach Bob Stoops.

FOLLOW THE LEADER

Sam Bradford can lead off the field, too. So can tight end Jermaine Gresham. It’s difficult with both off the field, then sophomore Ryan Broyles, the last productive player in the passing game, went down against the Hurricanes.

Despite his unplanned absence, Stoops wasn’t resigning to a lack of offensive leadership as a factor in the loss.

"If I say there’s a big one, then you’re making excuses,” Stoops said. "I feel we still have enough character and tough guys on our offense for that not to matter. Brody Eldridges, Matt Clapps, Trent Williams. We got some guys that are capable of leading and are.”

POLL WATCHING

On paper it might seem a bit unfair, but the Sooners sank 11 spots in the media poll with their second loss.

Two losses, each by a point, away from their home stadium and played after losing their best offensive weapon during the game, might seem convincing enough to keep Oklahoma from falling out of the top 20.

The Sooners fell 13 spots in the coaches poll to No. 21, and 11 spots in the media poll to No. 19.

I'm surprised that David is so willing to give cudo's to the special teams. Miami started every drive after kick off on the 35 or 40 yard line. We luckily got a few good plays, or good breaks, this week to mask the problem. But the special teams aren't "special" yet. We lost that phase of the game.

We have great individuals on our team, but I'm waiting to see a great team instead of great individuals...

The linebacker play is poor against the pass. Reynolds has lost a step or two and it shows. He cannot cover a shallow crossing route. Miami exploited that over and over again. Why wasn't the coverage changed or someone put in to cover the passes? I'll answer that myself. Because they could not stop the run either. Only Beal and McCoy was playing on the defensive front. Not sure what was happening to the other guys. This defense does not have the mental toughness and spends too much time reading their press clippings. The offense is okay but that's it. Without a true go to receiver the Miami defense concentrated on stopping the run. The offense did pretty good depite that. It was up to the defense to give the offense one last shot when they took the field with 4:18 left. They could not stop the Hurricanes. Same story against BYU at the end of the game. Why? No heart? No toughness? Something is missing with this defense. The coaches get paid to bring out the best in the players and to motivate them. It isn't happening. Five losses this season is not out of reach.

I feel bad for the really great athletes on the team that have to watch others fail to contribute and honor the team the way OU tradition demands. And by 'others' I mean coaches also. This team just isn't mean, tough, and spirited enough. Half the D is great, the other half sucks. Same for the offense. No fire in the belly, and that's the coaches fault. Stoops makes me sick to hear his post game comments. Take the blame, for god's sake. Say how predictable you are on offense and how you can't run with the receivers on D. And blocking? We are at our all time low in our failure to open holes for the RBs and protecting the QBs. After the Horns carve us up in pieces maybe then the old foegeys in red coats will get mad enough to call in our overpaid coach and give him an ear-full on OU expectations. And don't expect all those four star recruits you claim are coming to actually show up. I watched both sidelines from the end zone Sat night. The Canes were always pumping and moving. We looked like we were in a malaise of Stoop!!!

Just hit me, how can the "Special Teams Impress" when Madu is getting hammered, just crushed, at the 15 on a kickoff return that started outside of the endzone? I didn't find anything overly "impressive" about the special teams. Great acting job by Tress on that one, we kicked the ball fairly well in the punting game. Moreland still needs to grow a leg though. Coverages were decent, but that is their job. No. I don't think "impress" is the right word. Maybe, "solid"?

Wow. Bob says Matt Clapp is a "leader." What? Seriously? He was a detriment to the team on Saturday night. If it weren't for his "leadership" Landry wouldn't have been hammered blindside at full speed. We were better off with ten guys on the field than with him for most of the night. He had a few big penalties to boot.

How is it that a premiere program has ZERO skilled WRs (Kenney and Caleb have some value at this point) after their number one goes down? How is it that we don't have a TE that can catch and run with it after the number one goes down? How is it we don't have a non-lazy o-lineman that can actually move his feet (what was with that "Sooner Speed" artcile, Berry?) and make a block?
Chris, Hesston - Oct 5, 2009 at 12:11 pm
Ok so they are done to roughly 60 players. Why recruit a player if you don't have confidence in him to step up and make plays no matter if he's a freshman or not.
Scott, Bowling Green, OH - Oct 5, 2009 at 10:22 am
85 players is really not that many. Tom Wort and Mike Balogun are on that list as well. The entire 25 freshmen class is on that list. They just got here, they can't be expected to perform at this level yet. When one does, it is remarkable. You reference Switzer, well he had 125+ players to choose from. Injuries were not as big a deal back when scholarships weren't limited.

You have 85 players on scholarship + walk-ons. There is plenty of talent and leadership within this group of players. Coaching is suposed to mean that all of these players get reps, get coaching, get film work. When Bud and The King lost players to injuries there were players ready to play and the play calling was not limited as it is now. Wake TFU people. Our co-ordinators are not co-ordinating worth a crap. 60+ players are not even being schooled in big time CFB. This crappy paper will not call these two co-ordinators out. Fans call them out on the blogs and comments on the the articles but these people coaching this team are too far above us to even care. Come on media do your job as well.
Steve, Ketchum - Oct 5, 2009 at 8:51 am
At what point does the staff of this paper stop making excuses for OU? There have been injuries that's great, move on and develop the players who aren't hurt and get them on the field!
Scott, Bowling Green, OH - Oct 5, 2009 at 7:39 am
We fell that far because we're no good. This isn't a top 5, 10 team, and the "sunshine pumpers" who were talking championships after wins over Tulsa and Idaho can now be tagged "non-football" guys as well. Moreover, we'll get torched in the Cotton Bowl week after next, so deal with it.
