MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Florida’s Tim Tebow chuckled Monday when asked his reaction to comments made by Oklahoma cornerback Dominique Franks, who said Tebow would be the Big 12’s fourth-best quarterback.

But for Gator linebacker Brandon Spikes, it was no laughing matter.

Spikes fired back at the Sooners on Monday as the bulletin-board material for both teams continued to pile up heading into Thursday’s BCS National Championship.

"If they can stop our offense, hey, my hat goes off to them," Spikes told reporters during media day. "But I really don’t think they can. As long as we play well on defense, give the ball back to Tim and the rest of those guys, we should roll.

"You keep hearing they’ve done this and scored all these points in the last five games," Spikes said. "But I really feel like they haven’t faced a defense like ours, and Big 12 defenses are a joke. It’s always like a bunch of basketball scores when I watch SportsCenter. So we’ll see."

Spikes said the Sooners were "living in a fantasy world" if they think Tebow would be the fourth-best quarterback in the Big 12.

Spikes’ comments were in reaction to Franks’ remarks on Sunday that Tebow would rank behind OU’s Sam Bradford, Texas Tech’s Graham Harrell and Texas’ Colt McCoy if he competed in the Big 12.

Franks said he was irritated after he’d heard Tebow had insulted Big 12 defenses.

During the broadcast of the SEC Championship, CBS play-by-play announcer Verne Lundquist said Tebow had discussed his Heisman vote with Lundquist and analyst Gary Danielson. According to Lundquist, Tebow told them he respected the Big 12 quarterbacks, but that he "would like to throw against some of those defenses in the Big 12.”

"You know, him saying he wants to face a Big 12 defense, it’s been great listening to all the comments they’ve been making,” Franks said. "So Jan. 8, we’re going to see. Everybody says our defense is suspect in the back end. So hopefully, he’ll throw me the ball a couple of times, and I can get my hands on it."

"We’ve heard it all year. This is going to be our chance to prove everybody wrong.”

Tebow said Monday he didn’t intend to insult Big 12 defenses and that his comments have been taken out of context.

"I didn’t say it like that,” Tebow said. "I’ve always dreamed of playing teams like Texas and Oklahoma. I just love college football. And not just the Big 12, but the Penn States and USCs.

"When I said it, I was talking about it in a way like that, not like we’re superior in any way. That wasn’t what I meant.”

Monday wasn’t the first time Spikes has spouted off about the Sooners since arriving in Miami last week.

Saturday, he took his first jab at Big 12 defenses saying it seemed the Big 12 puts its best athletes on offense.

Later, Spikes said Sooner running backs Chris Brown and Mossis Madu wouldn’t compare favorably with the running backs he’d faced in the SEC.

Tebow, who was told about Franks’ comments by an assistant coach during a quarterback meeting Sunday, said he didn’t mind all the trash-talking coming from both sides.

"You can say whatever you want to say,” he said. "I like it. It’s fun.”

"It makes it more competitive and I’ll enjoy it.”

Franks attended Monday’s media function, but said he was "not doing any more interviews.”

Look, if there's a healthy Austin Box playing OU's got more than a shot. They might win. The middle will be better off. Murray's running and pass-catching is what should concern all OU fans right now. It makes the Sooners less dimensional.

The funny thing about Franks' statement is that ONE HUNDRED Heisman voters agreed with him and rank the 3 Big 12 QB's ahead of Messiah Tebow.

Why even show up for the game OU. Gosh, the Gators are the best team ever. You have no chance at all! You have no Def. and your backs are average. After Texas had the big win last night, They should be #1 acording to Mack. I think OU should just write a letter and say UNCLE!......................................................NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Robert, Denver - Jan 6, 2009 at 8:04 pm
Tommy,

Do you not have a local website in gator land to go play with? Glad to hear we have no chance... hear that boys? Retard Tommy from Orlando says we have no chance... guess that means we don't even need to show up? Heck, why even play the game?

Big 12 QBs worth mentioning? In order?

Bradford, McCoy, Harrel, Robinson, Freeman, Daniel, Griffin, Ganz, Reesing...

Where do I put Tim Tebow, stickly for his QB skills? Probably tied with Josh Freeman for #5...

Florida gave up 41 points in a bowl game loss to Michigan last season and lost to Mississippi this year giving up 31. They have lost the exact same number of times as OU during the last year. But, we have no chance; they are the fastest, most athletic, most fired up team the world has ever seen, except for twice in the last 14 games.

It is strange how the national media has barely latched on to any of the comments that Spikes has made about OU and the Big 12. Anyway, I hope that Dominique Franks does get his hands on like three of Tebow's passes and runs them back the other way. The trash talking is definitely coming on stronger from the Florida side now. Go win it OU!!!

'James in Norman' hits the nail on the head.

We will find out how much better Tebow is than Robinson or Harrell or McCoy for that matter Thursday night but you can't overlook the talented guys that surround Tebow. He can't do it all himself... he just doesn't have the numbers to support that argument. Last year was last year. Tebow just hasn't been as explosive this year. Tebow can get as motivated and as charged as he wants but it's his teammates who are going to make the biggest difference in this game and IMO like they have all year to this point.

Simply put, Tim is over-rated this year to some degree.

Franks just did something you never do and that's 'Tell it like it is'. Florida's guys have already been doing it but their chicken lilly's and continue to back out of their comments. Franks just said what most of us were already thinking.

How does a guy with extraordinary talents at QB and all that Percy Harvin type talent across the board put up stats that barely surpass those of Zach Robinson's down in Stillwater? Tebow has passed for almost 1,000 yds less than he did last year his Heisman campaign. Perhaps Florida is in this game moreso because of Harvin's 8.8 ypc average or Chris Rainey's emergence and OR last but not least Jeffery Demps 8.4 ypc average. side note: (Seems to me Florida's bread 'n butter this year was not Tim Tebow. If OU can stop the run WATCH OUT particularly if OU's offense is enfuego) It's fairly accurate to say Tebow would have only been the 4th best QB in the Big12 this year. Just look at his competition: Bradford, Harrell, McCoy, Robinson
I don't expect the Florida players including Tebow to understand all of this of course but come Thursday night we'll find out who the player with the biggest impact will be.

My money's riding on Slinging Sammy Bradford making Franks look all knowing.

Over the years it has been shifty or fast quarterbacks to break OU's back not powerful runners. I sure hope so, I will be sitting and watching the game here in Virginia with three brothers from Florida. You all think about me because we've started talking noise already. I figured I may as well. What the heck. In the end, it's just football. Boomer Sooner!
eudell, Virginia Beach - Jan 6, 2009 at 12:31 pm
If you listen to the media Texas was screwed and OU doesn't have a chance against Florida. Last night Mack Brown demonstrated a complete lack of class. Before and expecially after the game the Fox commentators kept saying that Texas should be playing Thursday and Brown was just his normal obnoxious self. I was rooting for Texas to beat Ohio State only because the Longhorns are a conference team. Toward the end and with all the commentary by the announcers I started wanting the Buckeyes to win to shut Brown up. I only hope the Sooners come out of the gate with fire in their eyes and play to their potential. If they lose after giving it their best shot then that is it. However, if they lose and play the way they have the last five bowl games it is a reflection of the coach's philosophy on preparations for the bowl game. GO SOONERS!!! BEAT FLORIDA!!!

I'm hoping for a well-played game where all the players uphold the unwritten code of sportsmanship and civility. I would prefer that only the coaches do the speaking prior to a contest, as college students tend to spout off in a non-team-representative way. Tebow and Bradford are both intelligent, talented quarterbacks. May the best team win.

im sick to death of the media's man crush on tebone. to hear espn talk this guy is freakin superman. he is an average qb who is big and can run the ball, thats it. he's not the second coming but he is the second most over hyped great white hope next to tyler hansbrough of UNC. espn loves both of these guys, im waiting for a double wedding with dick vitale marrying hansbrough and corso marrying tebone. oh wait if corso wants to marry tebone he's gonna have to fight off herbstreit cause he's in love with tebone to. both of these guys will be the biggest busts in the NFL and NBA. tebone will never play a regular season down at qb in the NFL and hansbrough will never average more than 6 points a game. i cant wait to see all these ou haters after ou spanks the gators.

Chris, of course that is what happened. It's all pro-UF down there in Miami, baby. If they could, the media would marry Tebow.
Jacob, Kansas - Jan 6, 2009 at 10:28 am
This is awesome. The media, just like with Obama, allows Tebow to correct or re-state his previous statements. Obviously, they were taken "out of context." Were Franks' statements maybe not also in the same mold? After all, he was baited into the statement. Ridiculous. Just win, baby. Just win.
Chris, Hesston - Jan 6, 2009 at 10:01 am
My gosh Sooners, please beat the Gators on Thursday. I am tired of everyone in the media talking about UF. Franks has a good point, Tebow is not a throw-first QB and if not for the talented team around him, he wouldn't be in the position he is in. I guess the same can be said for Bradford, but I can assure you Bradford will be the one laughing at Tebow when he takes off in the NFL.
Jacob, Kansas - Jan 6, 2009 at 9:54 am
Here's a nice little comparison: Zac - 204 of 314 (65%) for 3064 yards, 25 TDs, 10 INTs, and 146 rushes for 562 yards and 8 TDs ////// Tebow - 174 of 268 (64.9%) for 2515 yards, 28 TDs, 2 INTs, and 154 rushes for 564 yards and 12 TDs ....... Virtually identical stats, though Tebow's are slightly better overall (more TDs/fewer INTs), yet which player had the better team around him? I wish Dom wouldn't have said what he did to a reporter, but I can't say I disagree. BOOMER SOONER!

John from OKC, Chase Daniel isn't the forth best quarterback in the Big 12. The kid, Robertson, from OSU is. Chase crumbles under pressure and won't even get drafted. This coming from an OU fan. But look at the respective games against the aggies and MU.

This happens every year in any big game. The media is desperate for something to print, and will try to coerce a player into saying something controversial. Stoops should have made players available for Sunday and Wednesday only to cut down on the media distraction. Brandon Spikes and Tim Teabag have been running their mouths since the SEC Championship game and now one player on OU’s defense finally had enough and stuck up for his team and the media crucifies him. Teabag is nothing but a coward! He got called on his comments and tried to back peddle his way out with his “aw shux” attitude and probably circumcised 3 babies as penance. I am just waiting for him to breakout and scream “FABULOUS!” during one of his many press conferences. The guy is as queer as a two dollar bill. No wonder he likes to do circumcisions….

The reason for all the flap is that it was directed at "St. Tim". Most of the ESPN guys and other media members really believe that Tibo is Superman. Based on the comments of his teammates, they feel the same way. I'll say this about Franks, he is a great athlete who could have been a D1 basketball player if he wanted it. He will not need to back off or be afraid. Still, somethings are better left unsaid.

Is Bob losing control of the team already? How about a little less lip service from the players and more focus on the reason they are in Miami. Let Franks get beat on one play during the game and maybe it wouldn't have happen if he would been focused on his performance and preparation. He wrote a check with his comments that I sure hope that he and the defense can cash at the end of the game. Bob needs to rein these guys in and get back on the all-business approach mentioned when they left Oklahoma.

To be honest Franks probably should have stated that Tebow would have been the third best QB in the Big 12. Because according to the Heisman voters Tebow was ranked third setting behind two Big 12 QB’s.

The one thing that really makes me mad is that all the national writers are paying attention to OU’s comments but don’t really care what the Spikes’ kid has to say. He was stating that OU is slow and the Big 12 is a joke, all Franks did was rank some QB’s. So why isn’t anyone blasting Spikes’ comments all over the internet and why is ESPN only making a big deal out of what OU says.
