The Cowboys had every reason to celebrate Saturday night.

Oklahoma State 28, Missouri 23.

On a day of unexpected results in the college football world, none was more unexpected than this. The Cowboys went on the road, a place where they've struggled, and not only defeated the third-ranked team in the country but also stymied a high-powered offense.

"It was a great opportunity on a national stage," Cowboy linebacker Andre Sexton said. "We got a chance, and we just wanted to go out there and show everybody."

Now opens a world of possibilities for OSU.

Now opens a world of possibilities for OSU.

Why can't the Cowboys win the South Division?

Why can't they play for the Big 12 Championship?

Then, who knows?

Such talk doesn't seem outrageous after the Cowboys stood toe-to-toe with a heavyweight and scored the knockout.

This was a long and bloody bout, both sides landing one big blow after another. The Cowboys had every opportunity to throw in the towel. They could've done it after the Tigers pulled within a touchdown late. Or after Missouri forced them to punt with almost three minutes remaining, an eternity for the Tiger offense. Or after the Tigers marched into Cowboy territory.

But the Cowboys never did.

They just kept fighting.

All of it started with the defense. Sure, this is a unit that played well the first five games of the season, but really, it hadn't been tested by any of those opponents, not like Missouri promised to test it Saturday.

But OSU intercepted Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel three times, including the game-clinching one by Patrick Lavine.

The former Heisman Trophy frontrunner had thrown one interception combined in his first five games.

“It seemed like we were a little bit off all night,” Daniel said. “Whatever the reason, I have no idea.”

The reason was the OSU defense. The Cowboys pressured Daniel sometimes, then dropped into stifling blanket coverage other times.

“We weren't just executing as well as we should have,” Missouri coach Gary Pinkel said. “I think you give them credit for that.”

The Cowboy offense did its job, too. It managed an amazing balance, mixing big passes with timely runs. OSU rushed for 187 yards and two touchdowns and passed for 215 yards and two touchdowns.

What's more, the Cowboy offense shortened the game by keeping the ball away from the Tigers with several long drives.

Perfect, the Cowboys were not, but they were better than the Tigers.

“They certainly did the things necessary to win,” Pinkel said.

This was no fluke, by the way. The Cowboys didn't use a bunch of fakes or a slew of gadgets. They didn't do anything flashier than running their offense and playing their defense.

They beat the Tigers straight up.

“We didn't do the things you needed to beat a real good football team today,” Pinkel said.

The Cowboys did more than enough.

They took some punches, but they also landed plenty of their own. In the end, they stood alone with the Tigers flat on their backs.

I didn't know if they could do it or not. I wanted them to be able to, but I haven't seen much OSU football this year, because it hasn't been televised much. I'm glad they won. I didn't expect it, but it was a nice ending to an otherwise shi**y day.

I knew that OSU could pull the upset against Mizzou as long as they put the pressure on Daniels, which the defense did and deserves much credit. I attended school at OU and was disappointed in the outcome of the red river shootout, but it made my day to see the cowboys walk out triumphantly. It would have been better to see both teams walk out victorious.

Anyways, I think you have a great team this year and proved worthy of national media and are definitely BCS contenders. Zach has a great arm, can move, and distributes the ball well amongst the receivers. You have a phenom receiver, Dez, that is worth watching everytime he touches the ball... The two blows to the head was cheap and uncalled for. You also, have a great TE and some tough backs. Your defense is strong and you guys have a team that can beat UT as well as TT. I will be cheering you on until we meet at Bedlam. BEDLAM will be scary, especially since it is at your house but we will make the adjustments and I'm sure it will be a great game to watch. Goodluck and see you then. BOOMER SOONER!!!

OK I can't read all the arguing crap, it is irritating...but to all the people who said that the DOK picked OU to win and OSU to lose....Gundy even said the only people who thought OSU could win were the people in the locker room before the game... That means he didn't even think the OSU fans really thought it could be done. It is called an upset, a surprise, for a reason...it wasn't expected to happen. Don't be mad at the people who didn't expect OSU to win. Very few people actually expected it to happen.

But it did. Congrats. Good for you. Be happy, and start looking towards next week's game. :) Good luck Cowboys.

I'm not sure but I think they are considering the 6-0 from '07 as 5-0 because 1 of the teams was a division 2 opponent. Kind of like back then you couldn't count a win against a division 2 team except once every 2 or 3 years to be bowl eligible.

Just a guess.

Thanks Patrick, it is refreshing to come on here and talk sports. All we get on the KC Star.com is jaded KU fans still PO'd for exposing them at Arrowhead last year with their childish comments. I think as a whole the big 12 is the division to beat. There has been a lot of talent that has stayed here in the midwest because a lot of these kids know they will start on these teams as opposed to holding the clipboard at USC, Florida or at Michigan. This is a big reason for the big 10 teams now losing year after year lately. It is apparent that in the years to come the big 12 will more than likely be playing a team from the SEC for the National Championship. At least that is my view, but hey, I could be wrong.

Good conversation starter there JP. I completely agree about Baylor. That one has me nervous already. The good thing is we have owned Baylor and the only good team they have played (OU) blew them out in Waco.

UT-That one will still be really tough in Austin. They are better than Mizzou and should prove it next week. I'm not sure we can get the same kind of pressure on McCoy that we got on Daniel. But, we should be able to score some on them. Probably our toughest remaining game, with all due respect to the Sooners.

ISU-Should be a laugher, but remember they did play KU a great game and should have won (which makes their blow-out by Baylor make Baylor even scarier).

TTech-Will probably be the regular shoot-out, but I watched part of their game against NU and I think our defense is more improved than theirs. Maybe this is the year we finally break the hex and win in Lubbock.

CU-I'm not as worried about this one as I was earlier in the season. Looks like everybody was a little to quick to start hyping the Buffs. Cody Hawkins looks worse every week. Last time we played in Boulder (2004?) we blew them out. Should get the W.

OU-This should be the best chance to beat them since we did it in 2002. Bradford is playing exceptionally well, but if they don't develop a running game, teams may start figuring out how to beat them. I truly hated to see the injury to Ryan Reynolds. That was a tough break, but their defense showed they are susceptible without him. Also, we should have a huge edge on them in special teams.

Realistically, I don't know if we'll make the Big XII Championship, but playing Mizzou again at Arrowhead would not be easy regardless of last night's outcome.

Heard an interview with former OSU player Sam Mayes that the hardest places to play in the Big 12 was #1 Norman and #2 Columbia.

We got a tough road game under our belt and that will count for something down the road... like @ Tech... How do they struggle so mightily with a team that was blown out at home the week before by the team that we just beat at home. Here's how I see the rest of OSU's schedule

Baylor at home: Trap game, if OSU doesnt realized Griffin is a great player by now, Sat. may be toolate... we cant look ahead. W

@UT: We are more balanced than OU and btw, Mayes ranking of the easiest place to play : #1 Austin. No more late folds like OSU has done before with UT, its a W.

ISU: W no comment

@Tech: A tough place for OSU in the past but had a big lead 2 years ago that slipped away and Tech might be a tad overerated... Nebraska anyone? W

@ Colorado: Who is the real Colorado? Sporatic play will doom the Buffs as the Cowboys offese will remain consistent W

uo @ home: This will be the game to determine the South champ. If it were in Norman it might be a different story (see above) but in Stillwater the home fans will have some real celebrating to do, setting up a rematch with Mizzou in the Big 12 championship...

Of course, I am a homer, but argue my points and REMEMBER, we didnt even have our ALL BIG 12 TIGHT END BRANDON PETTIGREW and we all saw what he did to Tech last year... (60somethin yard touchdown rumble)

have a great day

As a long-time OSU fan, I just want to say one thing, don't think this one big win is going to make us champs. We have to be ready for every opponent, even lowly Baylor. And fans, the team has made big strides, so now it's time to get off your butts and sell out BPS this weekend. If you don't fill up every seat, it will be a disgrace. The team deserves a full house because of what it has accomplished, so get it done OSU fans.

What a couple of great football games. Then I think about my Michigan Wolverines who lost to Toledo (holding my nose). Growing pains are so hard to go through with a new coach. OSU looks great! That defense is going to get even better and this game has to be a huge confidence boost. Combine this with a great offense and good special teams, well, if you're a Pokes fan you have to feel good. OU might be in some trouble. Losing Reynolds is a HUGE loss. Kind of lamenting that Curtis Lofton is gone. This is a big spot to fill in. I was real surprised they weren't able to run the ball against UT. Might have been better to see some more formations out of the I to get an extra blocker in the backfield. Gosh, the special teams for OU are horrible and they getter get this shored up quick. The key in that game I thought was OU scoring in 2-3 minute drives and UT coming back with 6-7 minute drives. The defense was just gassed in the fourth quarter. This season is a long way from over. Texas is going to have to go through a murderer's row of teams to win the Big 12 South. Mizzou next week with OSU to follow??? They have got to be thanking their lucky stars that those games are in Austin. This is going to be one fun season!

I live in "A House Divided" (you Cowboys and Sooners fans kknow what I'm talkin' about), and am an Okie State grad (1979). That said, I was of two minds about the games I saw. Felt bad for the Sooners, felt reeeaaalll gooooooood about the Pokes! The missus (an OU fan) felt the same way. That loss @ Dallas can't feel good at all, much less the fall from number 1. Stoops is gonna get more grief as not being able to win the big game. I hate to see the pressure the local media will put on him (the Oklahoman was the paper that had a Page 1 editorial criticizing Switzer's coaching back in the 1970s, IIRC). That's OK, OU- bounce back & get 'em next week. Keep your heads up.

Sorry, but most of the "backhanded compliments" aren't. They are just being real. No, Zach shouldn't be a Heisman contender...yet. His numbers aren't close to last years, mainly in the running area. All I know is that the Defense was amazing. Beckman's philosophy is taking form, and the players are getting better. Our offense has taken a step back the last two games, but is still fine. Gundy off scribbling by himself late in the game made me chuckle. He really doesn't care what people think at all. Love it.

Yes, Patrick, apparently interceptions thrown during 2 point conversion don't count, because there were four of them, by my count.
He folded under pressure, just like he did when OU defeated missou last year. And you're right about years to come John, or at least, next year looks good. Bryant, Robinson, Hunter, Sexton (underrated), Lemon, D. Davis, Chinasa...a ton of playmakers coming back. And of course, our Coash, he of infinite focus and lack of concern for the opinions of the cynical media, will be able to keep them focused, and hopefully, hungry. Defense was like a pack of dogs on Saturday. But first things first, we can only win one game next Saturday. prepare for BAYLOR. One game at a time.

A die-hard, orange-blooded, OSU alumni's thoughts (not that you care...)
My top five...
Alabama
Texas
Penn State
Texas Tech
ou

If ou had a run game the outcome would have been much different. I believe they will develop one before this season is out. But for this loss, and to a very good UT team, I can't see them leaving the top 5. Do we belong in the top five or even ten? Probably not at this juncture. Win at Texas and we are legitimately a top three team. As Marla said, and as Nebraska demonstrated, Tech is very beatable at home. My fear is getting tripped up by Baylor or Iowa State. Like virtually everyone has said, we have to take one game at a time. To the classy ou fans and alums - thanks for your sincere compliments. As an OSU alum, I would have liked nothing better than for the Bedlam game to be two undefeated teams. To Carl, JJ, Jacob/Danny, and Skeeter: you all are gutless wonders, but then I think we all knew that. Great win, Pokes!!

Robert-Thanks for the backhanded compliment. Not sure why some of you can't just offer sincere congratulations without trying to take a little something away from it. And I would say that one game CAN make or break a season. This win for OSU will give them the confidence (especially the defense) to help them keep it going strong the rest of the season. Had they lost it at the end, it would have been devastating. As for "breaking" a season, it definitely damaged Mizzou's chances at a NC as well Daniel's Heisman hopes.

I have to say, I feel a little guilty about not believing in this Cowboy team they way they obviously believe in themselves. After suffering for 20+ years as a Cowboy fan and watching them squander big opportunities, watching this game was just surreal. I think they can be Big 12 champs if they stick to the program, take one game at a time (i.e., don't overlook Baylor next week), and continue to not be intimidated by big-name programs.

BTW, Tech is definitely beatable and we have OU at home. THE game is TX, but again, one game at a time! Ranking should be top 10, but not top 5. We've got a little more proving to do . . . Besides, I think the disrespect fires them up, so leave us out of the top 10 - whatever works!

One question-Everything I've seen said Daniel had three interceptions. Didn't he actually have FOUR? Ricky Price got the one off the deflection, Andre Sexton had the one thrown right to him and of course the clincher by Patrick Levine. But didn't Ugo Chinasa intercept the two-point try on Missouri's last TD? Does that not count since it was the two-point try? Anyway, safe to say Whiney-Boy Daniel is no longer the Heisman front-runner.

Thanks, Sean. I hope you are right. The problem I see is, with the exception of Vanderbilt, all of today's losers were ranked much higher than us and I think they all lost to ranked teams. So I see some shuffling within the top 10 but I do not think we will go over 11-12. Should leap Utah as they beat UW but with on 110 yds passing and 240 total yards. BYU struggled some, should go over them. KU won but against CU (when is Hawkins going to bench his kid anyway?). BSU is, well, BSU. I could go on, but I do not think today's losers are going to fall all that much. Prior ranking has so much to do with it, regardless of record. But, again, I sure hope you are right.

OU fan just wanting to give OSU the cred they deserve for beating Mizz. Since one OK team won big takes a little sting out of our loss. Big 12 might be more like the SEC than we may have thought. No one win or loss should come as a huge upset since it now looks like ANYONE can win if they play their best. I think OU fans ought to be a little more humble, OSU at Stillwater looks to be ahuge challenge right now

Anonymous, A--Remove him, no. Knock him down, yes. Especially since McCoy beat the #1 team, Bradford, despite the loss still had huge yards and 5 tds, and Tebow beat a higher ranked team also. My guess is that when the straw polls are done next week it will be McCoy, Tebow, Bradford or Sanchez and Daniels might be 5th. Wells should be out of consideration by now. B--No. OU lost but to the #5 team on a neutral field. They will probably fall to 5 or 6. Despite the win, I do not think the voters will move us into the top-10. We should be there, at about 8 or 9, but there is already talk of it being a fluke and it is rare, this late in the season, for a team to jump 7-8 spots. But we can hope.

Enjoy it tonight cowboys, and get ready for a good Baylor team that will be ready to surprise any team that is looking past them...just like we did to ex-Heisman hopeful Chase Smug Daniel. Baylor is next. One game at a time.

Zach, you are missing the point. Most, but not all, of the comments here are not about OU losing today. The comments are directed to a handful of mouthy OU fans who have done nothing but badmouth the OSU program all season long. The big difference between them and us is we are OSU fans who prefer our team to theirs. They are OU fans who hate everything not OU, in particular the strides we have been making. We would like to know where they, and their mouthy comments, are right now.

Well done and thank you to the players, coaches, staff, and all our fellow orange-wearers who made the trip to Missouri; we were there with you in spirit, screaming our heads off at home. What a game! THANK YOU! Ride 'em, Cowboys!

Folks, Enjoy the night. Biggest win for OSU in a long time. OSU is my #1 but I was dissapointed witht the Sooners loss. I always want to beat Texas. Good for the program...but it would have been better if two OK teams would have won. Don't be misled...I'll be pulling for the Pokes to beat the sooners....

What was with the fake punt on 4th down 17 to go on own 35..That was an idiotic play...Not sure what the thought process was with the coaching staf.. but not crying here...Go Cowboys

Edwin, I sincerely hope OU can get a dozen or so more national championships so they can be talked about in the same breath with OSU and all of the championships. OSU's national reputation in sports is just fine thank you; the fact that you are so ignorant of OSU sports does not mean the rest of the world is in the same boat. It is best for the Big 12 if the better teams wins, and in both the UT/OU and OSU/MU games, the better team won.

Now drink some milk and go nighty night edwin.

To all the OU fans that are offering your SINCERE congratulations, thank you. For the rest of you, your true nature is peeking through with the backhand compliments(see Edwin and Steve). Don't worry, we can be plenty gracious and there are more than a few OU fans that could take some pointers on that and the sore loser thing. We know we still have a long way to go with a lot of tough games down the road. But for now, we are going to enjoy one of our biggest wins ever. For all the OSU fans, if you are able, let's all show up for homecoming next week and pack the place out and show the players and coaches how much we appreciate all their hard work!

That guy is a true idiot and now that he's been shot down, he's going to go back to his trailer and get drunk, real drunk. I've had enough of his type of hatred. This is a great win for OSU, probably the biggest signature win in the past 25 years, maybe longer. However, we sure can't let down because there are teams out there just ready to knock us down. We need to pack BPS Saturday and show the networks that they've been missing big-time football. Great win Mike, your staff and all the players. You sure deserved this win.

I don't know why we can't just enjoy OUR win without having to have all the talk about OU....don't they have their own comment section? As far as us being gracious winners, I seem to remember that a few years ago one of the news stations in OKC sent an UNbiased reporter (hard to believe, but he was new to the state) in OU attire to an OSU game to sit in the OSU section and try to rile the Cowboy fans. The OSU fans were upset and gave dirty looks, but weren't rude to him. When he put on OSU attire and went to an OU game, the OU fans cursed at him, flipped him off, threw food at him, etc....The reporter concluded that only ONE of the state's teams had fans that were gracious....hint - it wasn't the Sooners!

Edwin, I see your ability to be gracious in defeat is equal to a typical OU fans ability to be gracious with wins. How embarrassing for you that you have to post "compliment's" on your rivals' page because your team let you down today. Maybe you can go post on UT stories now. While you're at it, stop by some WVU, and Boise State stories. Just for fun.

There's been a lot of sore winner/sore loser mentality in the past. It's time to leave it behind. Anyhow, wow, big win. Congrats to the players. Great game! We followed the game progress on the cell phone's browser. Good luck Cowboys in all the other games until the final game of the season Thanksgiving weekend. The Sooner Nation will appreciate it if OSU and Missouri beat UT after the Sooners’ glitch in Dallas today despite Sam Bradford’s 5 TD days. Oklahomans can only hope that with today's win OSU fans will be as gracious with today’s success as they are generally jealous and bitter with their usual seasons, even as they win bowl games against other 6-6 teams. Zac Robinson is a super person who is substantially better than the national perception he receives. Zac and Sam Bradford and Colt McCoy of UT are all great QBs and great kids. Chase Daniels is a super QB, but appeared to be a bit of a punk in the Tigers' only two losses last year, both to the Sooners, the second loss coming as the number 1 rated team in the nation last December in San Antonio. Of course, the conference would be better off if Missouri won tonight and UT wins out since each has a larger national presence and better national perception. The Cowboy contingent in the Sooner State should be excited because if OSU does win out, it will be their 11th conference championship, pulling them to within 30 of the Sooners' 41 Conference championships. Good job, Cowboys.

OU will be back and win some big games. No hate for them. But it is OSU'S night. How about Gundy on the bench drawing up plays while the D was on the field. The announcers were ready to roast him, had they not scored o their next possession. Say what you may about Gundy, but there is no one less concerned with what people/media think about him, and there is no one more focused on winning football games. Best win in years. Enjoy it tonight, and get ready for Baylor. That's now a trap game for the highly ranked Pokes!
