OSU vs. MISSOURI: The cowboys are in a new position - 5-0 and in the spotlight
Under pressure

By Scott Wright
Published: October 10, 2008

STILLWATEROklahoma State linebacker Andre Sexton said it best when asked about the situation facing the Cowboys Saturday at Missouri.

"We’ve never been in this position before,” the fourth-year junior said.

That’s good, bad, scary and exciting all at the same time.

None of the OSU players have been in a game this big before. They’re ranked No. 17, trying to get to 6-0 for just the second time since World War II, and trying to do it on the road against one of the country’s top three teams quarterbacked by the Heisman Trophy front-runner on a nationwide broadcast.

No pressure... right?

Hey Vito, do you still maintain that the winner of the Big 12 has to be undefeated? If so, do the Sooners plan to pack it in?

Well, the University of Zero vs. UT game is getting ready to start. Looks like the ESPN talking heads are picking MU to beat OSU...we'll see. GO POKES!

People who get pissy at other people whom they have never met on an internet comment board for not cheering for their team make it unpleasant for the rest of us.

Also, the word for not winning is "lose". "Loose" is the opposite of tight.

Go Pokes!

If OSU can just win 1 of the 4 big games (OU, Mizzou, UT and Tech), A 9-3 season would be a huge improvement and a very nice bowl. This isn't an overnight process and I think we still have a leaky defense. Very impressive what Gundy has done, couldn't have done it without building the BooneYard. Poke Grad-1988

Im so sick of every season OU this and OU that I am Proudly an O-State fan and at least my team can win a bowl game. If we do lose my flag still flies, and i still wear Orange and Black, not denouce my team or blame it on the refs

For all you non-OSU fans whining about the response you get when you say anything negative about OSU, try going over to the OU articles and posting a negative comment about the Sooners and see what kind of response you get. I'm pretty sure it will be much the same. And Glen-It's naysayers like you that annoy us the most. "All this buzz about what if we win" is called being a fan and being excited because we haven't been this highly rated or been in this big a game for a long time. If we lose, we lose. In the meantime, if we want to enjoy it AMONG OURSELVES, we will. If you don't like reading it, butt out and stay off the OSU articles.

Look people, If this game were in Stillwater it might be a close game. Missouri, a really good team with a pissy quarterback will beat a pretty good OSU team handily. I’d like to see Chase Daniel brought back down to Earth as much as anyone. Sorry it won’t happen this week. All this buzz about what if we win is a bunch a nonsense setting everyone up for disappointment. Move on to Baylor

Bobby, what was arrogant or incorrect? I can't have an opinion? You make the rules and police the forums? Who in the hell are you? I am a hell of a lot more honest than you. You are just a Punk. You don't have a clue to whom I root for. And yes, whatever team wins the South will be undefeated, and if you had any sense you would know that. One of the teams this weekend, and I don't know which one, will put themselves in position to do just that. Notice I didn't say OU. Understand what I say, in my opinion OU will get rocked tomorrow. But, that is just my opinion.

I am just glad to not see Carl the troll in here. That guy is a sad excuse for a fan of any team. OSU does need to at least keep the game close to get the respect they are looking for. A blow out would damage our goal.Yes you can still win a big 12 title with loses, but to truly turn the corner you have to establish dominance. Go pokes, and i hope OU kills Texas, i really, really, really dislike The Longhorns.

My mistake. Had it in my head Oregon State had lost to Utah State. Wife is an Oregon State alum so I had to pretend to be paying attention to the PAC 10 game at the time. Rather do yard work than watch the PAC 10.

Vito, come down off of your high horse. Most UO supporters on these OSU articles do exactly what you do and claim not to. At least they are honest about it. You come on here making arrogant and incorrect posts and we are just supposed to give you free pass. Yours isn't as bad as others but these articles are usually full of UO trolls trying to show how superior they think they are. I really don't care if you hate OSU or not, your choice. You are wrong on statement below. Being undefeated is not a requirement to win the Big 12 but it sure helps. I will not make wild predictions but it will fun later.

Billy, El Cid and a couple of others are common OU bandwagon folks on these boards. I wanted to point that out because they posted before Travis did. People like them show the actual mindset of OU fans, that OSU is making good strides and will continue to improve. Which is why we see so many OU loser bandwagon fans on these articles. I don't think your one of them, just wanted to point that out. Back to the article, I hope that the Cowboys are ready to play, becuase Mizzou is dang good and we would have to play the best game of the season to beat them! Go Pokes!

Bobby, Edmond, yes winning this game makes or breaks the expectations for the season. You're a fool. Are the players wearing wrist bands that say "Big 12 Champions"? That is their goal. Don't you remember? To reach their goal, they have to win this game, period. I am not rooting against OSU, like you think. You are so quick to attack someone that doesn't see things your way, you have blinded yourself. OSU fans like you sure make it hard for anyone to support OSU. Your comments make it easy to hate OSU. But, there are many good OSU fans that are mentally capable of having an intelligent discussion. You are the exception. You are not mentally capable of understanding what anyone posts. So, just sit back and read what everyone else posts and see if you can learn anything.

What a foolish comment, Travis. No one even commented anything about OU or OU being superior to OSU or anything of that nature. It just shows your true mindset, this was an article about OSU-Mizzou and you, without any prodding, start spouting off about how OU is jealous and worried of how much progress OSU is making. Well I have news for you, OU doesn't worry because they didn't have to wait until 2008 to make progress. What a shallow and expected comment from the true mindset of OSU fans, you're too worried about what OU is doing or thinking to enjoy OSU progress. Pathetic, but not surprising. Oh, and Barry from Ft. Collins, Oregon State didn't lose to "pathetic Utah State" as you stated. They lost on the road to #13 Utah, a game in which they were the underdog, quite different than losing to Utah State.

Nice to see all the OSU fans, but please get your facts correct. Oregon State did not lose to pathetic Utah State, but to not so pathetic Utah ranked #15 in Utah, by 3 points. So maybe USC is not as good as everyone thinks.

Vito, You are full of what you are shoveling. This is not the game that makes or breaks the season. The only posts that support that mentality come from UO supporters. This program is on the rise, one game and then one season at time. You should just enjoy UOs success instead of hoping for OSUs failure. No, you did not say you wanted to see OSU loose but anyone who can read could see the intent of your post.

The most disheartening seasons have been the ones where we were kicking the not out of Texas and let them come back and win it. Like we just said, "wow, we're beating Texas...what now? Oh heck yeah, let's play conservative and go 3-and-out every down"....I hate that mentality. You play to win every down and if you're up 48 to nothing, you keep pounding the team you're beating. You make them CHOKE on it every play of the game.
If OSU get's up on Mizzou like they did A&M, and then let Mizzou come back like they let A&M, it'll be a long ride home from Columbia win or lose.
Score early, score often and never let up. that's the ONLY way OSU will walk away a winner

Beieve that OSU has been expousing the improve each year and not the win at all costs theory. Appears the OU fans are getting worried that this plan is working and are extremely worried about the Academic and Athletic progress that is being made at this University. This appears to be a case of pure Jelousy. Maybe these fans should be worried about what is happening at their University.

With isolated exceptions on fan-boards, I do not think anyone from OSU has been spouting off any wild expectations. That said, should we get our hats handed to us by MU, it does not mean we are "same old OSU". Last I looked there would still be 5-6 games left including OU, UT and TT. Completely plausible that we could get toasted by the #2 team in the country but have turned the corner on the "should have been" wins against UT. That would not be "same old OSU". A lot of different things can happen should we win tomorrow and a lot can still happen should we lose. This is not going to make or break our season and it is not going to define us for the rest of the year. Look at Oregon State...they beat the #1 USC team and lose the following week to pathetic Utah State. One week's performance is not a season. Think USC has given up on their season because of the Oregon State loss? No. Theirs, like our situation now is similar. It is just one game--at the house of the #2 ranked team in the country. Odds are probably against us, but it is possible and we will keep improving should it not happen.

I didn't think Vito's comments were off base. The subsequent name calling was, though. Anyway, this is a big game for Gundy. If we get blown out, has Gundy made any progress? If we play close, does he get credit for improving the program? And if we win...all heck breaks loose! The one thing I've noticed over the years, through all the heartbreaks, is that in big games we tend to make STUPID mistakes. It's as if we realize the magnitude of the game and it overwhelms us. So, if we don't beat ourselves via turnovers and bonehead plays, I truly believe we can beat Mizzou. GO POKES!!

So, OSU has been talking it up, huh? I haven't really noticed all the yak, but it's understandable that in today's sports world trash talk is a given. One thing I haven't heard is a star from OSU accusing the other team of being "dirty" with late hits and spitting in the face. I watched the game and never saw any blatant late hits. And I don't believe a Husker player spit on Daniels. OSU has a chance to beat Mizzou, but probably won't. Oh, by the way. I am a Sooners fan!

I'M OPTIMISTIC ABOUT THE POKES' CHANCES AGAINST MISSOURI. YEA, THEY'RE A GOOD TEAM, BUT IF YOU LOOK AT THEIR SCHEDULE/RECORD THIS YEAR, THE SCHEDULE HAS BEEN PRETTY SOFT, OTHER THAN ILLINOIS. THOSE OF US THAT SAW THE NEBRASKA GAME SAW A DIFFERENT NEBBRASKA. THEY'VE GOT A LONG WAY TO GO BEFORE THEY GET BACK TO THEIR FORMER GREATNESS. IF MISSOURI DOESN'T TAKE THE COWBOYS AS BEING FOR REAL, IT COULD BE A LONG NIGHT FOR THEM.

Bobby, Justin, Patrick, I love it. Pissed you off and didn't even try. I didn't dog OSU. The program is where it needs to be, but they have to win this game or none of it means anything. Not one game at a time, this is the game. Do you want to start a name calling game? I can do that too. Did I say I wanted to see OSU loose?

I don't see what's wrong with Vito's comment. OSU, pretty much like everyone else in the country, hasn't really played anybody yet. They're undefeated and ranked--good. Now, as Vito said, put up or shut up. If they get blown out, they'll be the same old OSU. If they can win or even stay in the game then I agree, other Big XII teams need to look out, including OU.

This is the test of the rest of the season. If OSU walks out with a "W" Saturday night, the rest of the Big 12 will be revamping their entire game plans to try to stop them, which could benefit OU in the end. OSU isn't just a "gimme" this year. Teams will actually have to play 4 quarters.
If anyone has a chance to beat Mizzou, it's OSU.
