OSU Insider: Pokes peaking at right time
Texas Showdown: With ’Horns on the way, offense and defense at their best

STILLWATER — After quietly cruising under the national radar since their loss to Houston, it appears things have come full circle for the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

Quarterback Zac Robinson is playing as well right now as he has in his whole career, which is a good sign for OSU as it prepares to face Texas in a Big 12 South showdown. PHOTO BY STEVE SISNEY, THE OKLAHOMAN

No. 3-ranked Texas comes to town Saturday, bringing with them plenty of national attention and pre-game hype. Much like the season opener against Georgia, plenty of eyes will be on the Halloween night tilt, which could decide the Big 12 South title.

Here are five reasons why the showdown with Texas comes at a great time for OSU:

1. Zac Robinson is playing as well as he has at any point during his career. The senior quarterback ranks seventh in the nation in pass efficiency (158.27) and is coming off one of the best passing games of his career. Robinson was 23 of 27 for 250 passing yards and three touchdowns in the Pokes’ 34-7 win over Baylor.

→2. The Cowboy defense is playing its best football of the season. OSU had almost 90 minutes of scoreless football against Missouri and Baylor and has been showing signs of improvement every week. They tackled much better against the Bears after struggling in the first half against Missouri.

"That was one of the real points of emphasis this week,” defensive coordinator Bill Young said.

→3. Oklahoma State’s offensive line has jelled and is improving each week. The Pokes’ offense seemingly sputtered early in the season, but since redshirt freshman Lane Taylor was inserted at right guard against Rice, OSU has improved on the ground. The Cowboys have 205 carries for 933 yards, averaging 4.6 yards per carry since Taylor entered the lineup.

→4. The Pokes are coming off an easy win against Baylor. The 34-7 win over the Bears allowed OSU to get both Robinson and Toston some additional rest, while also giving their young players, especially at receiver and in the secondary, some extra game reps. Those factors could pay dividends against Texas. Newcomers Tracy Moore, Dameron Fooks and Justin Blackmon each had key catches against the Bears.

→5. OSU is starting to get healthy. If Texas was their first Big 12 game, the Cowboys would have faced them with several key players nursing injuries, especially cornerback Perrish Cox, who could be the squad’s MVP on defense and will likely matchup with Longhorn standout receiver Jordan Shipley. Cox is expected to be at full strength against Texas.

"I think we’ve had more injuries this year to key players than we’ve had in the previous four years combined,” Gundy said.

True enough, receiver Dez Bryant and running back Kendall Hunter might not play against Texas. But that has been the case for the last four games.

With Bryant and Hunter out, the Cowboys had a choice: They could have sat around and worried about when their All-American duo would return, or they could move forward with the exact same expectations to play well and compete for a Big 12 South title while hoping to get those guys back on the field at some point.

Clearly, OSU has chosen the latter.

Jason,
Sounds like you need some pals. You should go hang with the A&M yell boys. They would probably understand why you're so frustrated. Just trying to help.

Jason....Jeez dude...chill out.

The words of a desperate bandwagon fan of a bottom-rung team. Looks like the wheels are really falling off of the Schooner. Better join the Baylor boards for some consulation or consultation on how to except being the fan of a not so good team.

Jason your Mom didn't get paid much did she.
wally , woodward - Oct 26, 2009 at 8:53 pm
Jason OKC, I honestly can't think of anyone I know who acts like you do.

How old are you? 12? It sounds like you just learned some new bad words and want to show everyone.

Keep it up, bandwagon loser!

Haha.
Jacob, Kansas - Oct 26, 2009 at 8:01 pm
Jason you are trying really hard. Give it a break.
Travis, OKC - Oct 26, 2009 at 7:21 pm
Shannon you are supposed to be licking my gooch/taint area, not praying....
Jason, Oklahoma City - Oct 26, 2009 at 5:24 pm
This is by far the funniest thing I've seen on here, but seriously guys, take it easy on the real Jason. He's said on a different OSU blog that he knew he wasn't gay cause it hurt when he tried it!

Let the anger go and just be yourself Jason! You don't need to call people names and say those ugly things. Nobody on here is going to think less of you because you are gay! We couldn't think much less of you anyhow.

Jason, it is okay to be gay - just be yourself. It isn't your fault and you have done nothing wrong. I will pray for you, Jason.

Phil, Midlothian get your lick on as well
Jason, Oklahoma City - Oct 26, 2009 at 5:09 pm
Lets see, in his last post Jason uses the words: "testicle", "slapnutz", "homo", and the phrase "lick my gooch". There appears to be a fixation on male body parts if you ask me.

Really suprised to find out poser Jason is actually Jacob, Kansas. I would have bet my bottom testicle that it was Classless Travis. Anyways those of you who wish to get back to expert picks and sports analysis just ignore the poser Jason who last posted at 4:18, he (Slapnutz homo Jacob) is really lonely. Those of you who find it entertaining continue to enjoy!!

Jason, there is nothing wrong with being gay. You shouldn't be so angry about it. It sounds like you have a lot of issues. A good shrink can probably help you with a lot of this. Just be who you are and don't be so angry at everyone in the world about it. Just be yourself. Is this why you come over to the OSU articles and spew so much hatred? Are you mad about who you really are? It is okay. Just be yourself.
Shannon, Moore - Oct 26, 2009 at 4:37 pm
Very entertaining!

Says Jason: I AM NOT GAY! I AM NOT GAY!

LMFAO - Keep saying it Jason and soon it might sound true!

You know how I know you're Gay? ..because you're on a College Athletics-related message board, feeling the need to proclaim your sexuality! Again, LMFAO!

You don't have to hide it any longer and I promise people won't think less of you. You are what you are! Be proud of who you are!

One more thought Jason. Are you experiencing any lost time? Are there blocks of time that you don't remember? Maybe you have a multiple personality disorder? Might your other self really bleed orange? You might want to look into that.

Everyone ignore the Jason, Oklahoma City that posted at 4:02 and 3:26 if you don't wish to confuse myself with the posing poster any longer. By doing this you will realize it is not me making these outlandish posts and also you will verify the maturity level of either Classless Travis or Jacob, Kansas which ever one is lonely and bored enough to go through such trouble as to create a screenname and devote time typing the posts in order to pose as me. Very flattering yet a bit creepy...tools

And yes indedd I do agree with you on one thing poser Jason:

Jason, Oklahoma City - Oct 26, 2009 at 3:57 pm
hahaha. classic post Jason.
Corey, Stillwater - Oct 26, 2009 at 3:45 pm
Okay, Chris. Whatever.

Jacob, you are right, I guess. I really am a loser.

I guess it is time I come clean on these blog things. I'm having a tough year because my Sooners suck really bad. But, that isn't the real problem. The real problem is I am jealous of OSU. You guys are like real fans and I can't even afford tickets to OU. I wish I would have had the chance to go to school there, but my mom's night job - I'm not sure what it was but I think prostitution - didn't pay enough for me to go to school. So, I went to Moore Norman VoTech. There, are you guys happy? Yeah, that is right. I live in a trailer and I am poor. Yes, I have had a lot of problems with that crank drug. You are right, meth has held me back and affected my brain. It has made me hate these damn pokes even more! All I had was OU football, and now I don't even have that. To hell with all you orange people! And my hatred that I have towards you has nothing to do with these weird feelings I have been having lately about men. I just get a kick out of making grown men upset on this blog thing. It makes me feel weird feelings and feel good. There. I said it. But I'm not gay. I'm just confused and angry right now.

So to hell with all you stupid pokes.
Jason, Oklahoma City - Oct 26, 2009 at 3:26 pm
Oh...and two predictions I hope come true: 1) Zach gets first-team all-conference, and 2) Mike Gundy gets Big XII COY honors. If we end up with zero or perhaps even one conference loss, I hope both of these come true.
Chris, Jones - Oct 26, 2009 at 3:09 pm
Who is that Anderson guy...maybe he plays a corner? I saw him make some amazing open-field tackles against Baylor. He hasn't gotten much pub, but he sure played a damn good game on Saturday. Go Pokes!!
Chris, Jones - Oct 26, 2009 at 3:07 pm
Ya, Jason OKC? Is that all you got, loser?

Travis, OKC - Oct 26, 2009 at 1:46 pm
Jason, if OSU was so "insignificant" as you say, then why are you so obsessed with OSU?

Excuses are the norm in good ol' Norman, Jason. You must be a very lost and confused soul.

You would never take that bet on the OSU/UT game. Your prediction is so comical there is not way you actually believe it.

A loser like yourself never learns when to quit. Maybe you should, kid.
Jacob, Kansas - Oct 26, 2009 at 1:45 pm

I can't understand why any OU fan would not be pulling for the Cowboys to whip the you know what out of the whornes. If we can both win out what a game we will have in Norman the last game of the year. And the last thing we need is for the Whornes to go undefeated and end up in Pasadena. This is one Sooner fan who will be pulling hard for OSU on Saturday night.

Classless, what you think is not worth a squirt of monkey piss to me. I would take your bet but I know dang well you would not pay off in the end so why bother arguing with someone such as yourself about something as insignificant as OSU football?
Jason, Oklahoma City - Oct 26, 2009 at 12:26 pm
Jason is definitely mixed up. He just described what OU fans have been saying all year. Also, I will take that bet at a spread of 63 anytime. Want to go $1,000 on it?
Travis, OKC - Oct 26, 2009 at 12:14 pm
If McCoy had been healthy at Dallas, the score might have been more like what Jason suggests. Unfortunately, he's healthy now and makes for a hill too tall to climb. McCoy beat Bradford when Sam was at his best last year and with the OU defense being above average at least. Always hope and play the game.

And then all the cry-baby Poke fan's will sit around talking about how they would have won if Dez and Kendall had been healthy, assuming they don't play. If they do play, I don't know what their excuse will be but you can bet your bottom dollar they will have one, officiating possibly.

It will be important that the Cowboys not allow Texas to get rolling like the Horns did against Mizzou.
Gundy has a penchant for deferring until the second half when the Cowboys win the toss. Personally, I'd prefer the Cowboys not give Texaxs the first opportunity to score should OSU win the coin toss.
If OSU scores first and keeps pressure on the Texas Defense, OSU could get away with a big treat on Halloween.

Both teams are peaking and both quarterbacks are peaking. Arguably the best two teams in the Big 12 this year with the best two quarterbacks, about to face off in what might very well be the Big 12 Championship game. Texas is going to have the hype and an edge in talent, but OSU has the hunger and the attitude. Might very well come down to turnover margin.
Let's get this one.
