The 31-year-old man who died was in the driveway of a house at 48th Street North and Yorktown Place when police and medics arrived. He was taken by ambulance to St. John Medical Center in critical condition and was pronounced dead at the hospital, Sgt. Brian Hill said.

The house is diagonally across the street from Penn Elementary School, 2138 E. 48th St. North.

Students and teachers were leaving school for the day when the shooting occurred about 4 p.m. and were directly in the line of fire, but none of them was hurt, Hill said.
