Oklahoma Pet Tales: Boxer for his birthday

I turned around one day to see our grandson Wyatt and his buddy, Lexie, a 4-year-old brindle boxer, watching Grandpa working out on the deck. My camera was nearby, and I thought, what a great photo this would be. Just as I got ready to snap the picture, Wyatt turned to Lexie and gave her a big hug. That moment in time brought a flood of emotions through me.

Four years earlier, our son Chad mentioned at a family gathering that he had always wanted a brindle boxer and that one day he’d have one. Our daughter, Jamie, took a cue from his statement, and Lexie was Chad’s birthday present from her and her husband that year. Little did we know that would be one of the last birthdays we would get to spend with our son.

He was taken from us by a reckless driver a year and a half later in June 2005. Lexie then came to live with Jamie and her husband, Stacey. Three weeks after her brother’s death, Jamie found out that she was pregnant with Wyatt. Lexie has always been very gentle and extremely protective of Wyatt, just as his Uncle Chad would have been.
