Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry sent 20 steaks to the Galveston County Emergency Operations Center on Friday to pay off his friendly wager on the Oct. 11 game with Texas Gov. Rick Perry. The Longhorns beat the Sooners 45-35.
Galveston and the Texas coast were hit hard by Hurricane Ike, which made landfall on Sept. 13 and wiped out hundreds of homes.
Emergency management teams helped evacuate more than 12,500 Texans from coastal areas in the days preceding the storm. When the storm passed, emergency workers rescued more than 3,540 residents, operated more than 300 shelters throughout the state and distributed thousands of truckloads of ice and water to residents affected areas.
The steaks were provided by Beutler-Redd Ranches.
"Texans owe a debt of gratitude to the first responders who put themselves in harm's way to secure lives in times of emergency," Perry said. "We are thankful to Governor Henry and Beutler-Redd Ranches for giving these emergency responders a well-deserved reward, and look forward to seeing the Longhorns and Sooners battle it out at next year's game."
