An Oklahoma City man died of a heart attack while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, the Pentagon confirmed.
Frank R. Walker, 66, had been assigned to the 72nd
Civil Engineering Directorate on Tinker Air Force Base, the
Department of Defense reported.
He died Wednesday at
Bagram Air Force Base after suffering a heart attack, Tinker spokeswoman
Kathy Paine said Saturday. Walker was a geologist in environmental restoration while he worked at Tinker, and was a project construction manager for the
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers while overseas, she said.
This was his fifth trip to Afghanistan as a civilian volunteer, Paine said. Walker spearheaded reconstruction efforts of damaged and destroyed buildings, including schools, while there, she said.
Walker is remembered by his colleagues as being a dedicated man who was willing to leave his own family behind to improve the lives of others.
"The Corps of Engineers thinks the man walks on water, so to speak,” Paine said.
