Meeting in the Cabinet Room with the board and senior intelligence officials today, Obama said Boren, a former U.S. senator, and former U.S. Sen. Chuck Hagel will now lead the panel that was created during Dwight Eisenhower's presidency.

Obama said Boren and Hagel will report directly to him.

In remarks to the board and the intelligence officials, Obama said, "David is a longtime champion of intelligence reform. He was the longest-serving chairman in the history of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. In that time, he authored the legislation that created an independent inspector general at the CIA and major reforms to our oversight of covert actions.

"David was also the leading force behind legislation that has encouraged thousands of American college students to study abroad to deepen their knowledge of the world and cultures. I thank David for agreeing to serve in this capacity, even as he continues to lead the University of Oklahoma."

Obama added: "And we are sorry about (Sam) Bradford's shoulder."

Boren gave advice to Obama on intelligence matters during last year's presidential campaign.

Boren's son, U.S. Rep. Dan Boren, D-Muskogee, sits on the House Intelligence Committee.

Good choice, Mr. President. I knew this would be great reading once I saw the headline. All it would take is one intellectual leader to appoint another and NewsOk.com would crash. It is hilarious to read the comments, most with wild misspellings, based on facts from Fox News or some rogue blogger…ignorance must be bliss.

NOW we know why Boren endorsed Obama when the rest of the state voted for Hillary. What a piece of crap!
Cracka, OKC - Oct 29, 2009 at 2:20 pm
Funny how most of the people hyping Boren's alleged progress at OU can't even use proper grammar and spelling. David Boren and Barack Obama do share a lot in common. For one, they were both caught in homosexual affairs at least once before in their lifetimes (David Boren: relations in the Senate with younger men; Obama: Had an affair with Larry Sinclair). David Boren is the greatest ventriloquist doll to ever make it so far in Oklahoma. What a joke that a gay cowboy from Okla-Mobile-Homa like David Boren could ever make it to D.C.

The best choice available is someone who has not had active involvement in the industry for 15 years? Yeah, he was immersed in it during his senate years but that was 15 years ago. A whole new world out there.
Barry, Fort Collins - Oct 29, 2009 at 12:07 am
It could not have happened to a better person or leader. It is a great pick by Obama. I just hope Mr. Boren isn't off campus too much.
SoonernBigD, Dallas - Oct 28, 2009 at 9:45 pm
'B,' OU a tier one university? Are you joking? OU is (barely) a tier 2 university, ranked 108th in the nation, coming in at #9 in academic quality in the Big XII. THES-US News world rankings put OU at worse than #380th in the world--is that worth bragging about? US News peer assessment survey: OU scores a 2.9/5.0 in academic prestige, one of the lowest in the Big XII. Perhaps this is an consequence of OU's let-everybody-with-a-24 ACT-in acceptance rate of 80%? Or, maybe OU's awful 64% 6-year graduation rate? OU isn't ranked in the top 50 public schools in the nation, doesn't have any major graduate programs ranked in the top 50 (some not even top 100--e.g., engineering). OU brings in a rather paltry $150 million a year in research expenditures and has no AAU membership. Need I continue? Boren has blown a lot of hot air, and points to his "success" at paying NMS students enormous sums of money to attend a subpar public university, but in the meantime has NOT elevated OU to anything even *remotely* close to the likes of other Big XII schools like Texas or Texas A&M.
jesus lied for you, Heisman Town - Oct 28, 2009 at 9:39 pm
Great pick Mr. President. David Boren is a solid individual with a super-strong background, and able to be a moderate, that most idiots on this board can't even fathom to understand. Most of the folks that are going negative against Boren on this blog are only doing so because Obama wanted him and he had a "D" in front of his name.
Chris, Warr Acres - Oct 28, 2009 at 9:01 pm
Congratulations to President Boren and President Obama on this fine choice. Boren has easily topped Cross at this point to raise OU to a Tier One university! Look it up in US News's new college rankings. OU is the only tier one public university in the state. When I graduated, it was a tier three at best. Few have done more for this state and country than Boren. Jason in Edmond couldn't hold a candle to Boren's intelligence and global expertise. And yes, he was a conservative Democrat, but not a right-wing Republican, as Jason and the remaining 20% of the country favor.

I hate texas, micheal, and stinkerpants good to see some people agree on certain things...to the rest of you hey it is a free country feel free to speak you mind! I just feel sad that sometimes people let their hate, or inability to look at something with an open mind and form an opinion before they even do any research-FROM MORE THAN ONE OR TWO SOURCES then create an opinion. Good night to you all, I need to study......
Byron, Suitland - Oct 28, 2009 at 5:59 pm
yes stinkerpants probably the same Okies who pulled me over and asked "if I had a job, and how did I pay for my car?" And the same few Okies who just hate any type of change what so ever.....I don't want to go back and forth for nothing-everyone is entitled to their opinion. If you don't like our U.S. President than fine....but now Boren is a bad pic for this positon and Obama did just to win SIX FREAKING ELECTORAL VOTES!??? PLEASE!! Not saying next election won't be close it very well could be, but to stay on topic Boren kept OKLAHOMA UNIVERSITY ALIVE!!!! Before he got there OU wasn't any better than Mississipi or even Kansas for crying out loud! David Boren also did without any help from the football dept, as the 90's was OU's worse decade since the 40's! Boren made OU a freaking Merit Scholar powerhouse, not to mention raised the number of out of state students attendance which is where most Universities get thier money. The man is a genius contrary to popular opinion. I am very pleased that he is the pic....speaking of which I am about to obtain a cyberterroism Bachelors, glad to see a fellow visionary OKIE, not one who doesn't understand that just because it didn't happen in slow azz Oklahoma(which gets the effect of every thing late) that it's not going on somewhere in the world.

Josue, SW 29th - Oct 28, 2009 at 5:46 pm
Stinker, Michael, and Byron- you all are correct.

It won't matter what our president does, some people in this state will only try to find or create reason to as why he has failed them. The “us” v. “them” mentality is absolutely disgusting. It doesn’t matter if you’re black or white, rich or poor, well educated or an Oklahoman, you should agree that there has been nothing in this article or ranted about it below of any substance. No real reason has been established worth praise nor attack on our president.

Josue, SW 29th - Oct 28, 2009 at 5:44 pm
Yeah, Byron--it's a few very loud nutcases in Oklahoma hating, hating and hating. What do you think, about ten percent are among the ranters? I bet if we looked up the Fox News stats for Oklahoma, we'd find the ones that happen to also be the ranting nutcases we see on here.
stinkerpants, Oklahoma City - Oct 28, 2009 at 5:27 pm
I agree with Micheal, some of you won't admit your true reason for being so upset that O'Bama is the President. Just admit that it's because he wants to change things and it's a problem, funny change wouldn't be needed if things were working correctly to begin with. Then everybody wants to blame each other but won't team up to at least find common ground or a point in the middle to at least start off and work with. Well since I serve this country and was recruited right out of OKC I can say that the rest of the world doesn't always have it wrong Oklahomans....but hey I've only been around the world ten times what the heck do I know?
Byron, Suitland - Oct 28, 2009 at 5:14 pm
Wow, Craig. Yes I have. Gallup reports higher than that--53 percent. Of course, since they are not telling you what you want to hear, why they must be some uh them liiibburrrls, huh?

Whatever Boren wants to do on his own time is his own business. Whatever happened to "individual freedom"? I thought that was a pillar of popular neocon ideas? Some of you sound like you're discussing the merits of the Jonas brothers. Since many seem to not like ANY Democrats, and if the Republicans aren't conservative enought for you....feel free to start a third party. See how far that gets you. Ticky-tack outbursts and stupid ranting will not change this country-only calm, reasoned thinking will bring about the changes ALL Americans want. It seems that the President could have nominated Jesus Christ and some of you would still complain. Watch that blood pressure! Have a nice day.

And lets not forget the rest of the world (with the exception of West VA) isn't stuck in the 1850's O'Bama won without Oklahoma, He could do it again.....please don't think you're bigger than you are. Boren's idea of an intelligence briefing consists of braiding hair and trading secrets. He may even mix in a game of spin the bottle. "I hear Kim Jong-il has a crush on you, Mr. President. Should we give them the locations of our ICBMs? Is this earl gray tea? It's delightful!"

Oh, great. What did Boren do to deserve this insult? Now, the Obama haters and conspirators will attach Pres. Boren, too. At least it will satisfy the "diversity" crowd, if you know what I mean.
I actually think Boren has been a great Pres. for OU, and did more for Oklahoma after office than while in. Why's Obama trying to court the Oklahoma crowd? Usually, they just fly over us and poke fun at Oklahoma.

It is so funny to watch all these ignorant right wing okies get on here and make disparaging remarks about David Boren. How funny. He has accomplished more than all of you put together.

Liberal Senator? Oh, of course Jason, Edmond, that's why he was one of 2 Democrats who voted for Robert Bork. You call that a liberal.
David Boren would have won the Senate again against Inhofe. The only way Inhofe could win was by Boren resigning to become OU President.

richard, oklahoma city - Oct 28, 2009 at 3:42 pm
One of many Oklahoma Democrats who talked conservative during election time and promptly went back to Washington to vote liberal, his opportunistic jump to OU was a piece of perfect timing: by the early nineties, the jig was up, and Boren knew he wasn't fooling nobody no more. He would've lost his next Senatorial contest.

This position is more an honorary sinecure than anything else; it implies nothing more than that Boren was once an important Democrat Senator with experience on the Senate Intelligence Committee (which, in the case of liberal Democrats, is an oxymoron).

One among many topics of which I agree with the Milkman....Boren has probably done more for OU than any president since George Cross, circa 1947-1964.
