Nebraska intercepts OU's Landry Jones 5 times in 10-3 win

Published: November 7, 2009

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Matt O'Hanlon had three of Nebraska's five interceptions against Landry Jones and the Cornhuskers squeezed enough production out of their struggling offense to upset No. 20 Oklahoma 10-3 on Saturday night.

NewsOK Related Articles

The Sooners (5-4, 3-2 Big 12) failed to score a touchdown for the first time since a 29-0 loss to Texas A&M in 1998.

The Cornhuskers (6-3, 3-2) won despite getting just seven first downs and 180 total yards. They were able to get a yard when they really needed it, after Prince Amukamara returned an interception to the OU 1 in the second quarter. Zac Lee threw a short pass to Ryan Hill for the only touchdown of the game.

Oklahoma's last two possessions ended on interceptions, including O'Hanlon's third.

O'Hanlon ran back his first interception 30 yards to set up Alex Henery's 28-yard field goal.

Roy Helu Jr. ran for 138 yards on 20 carries for Nebraska.

I'm not a fair weather fan and I realize that the Sooners have been hit by a string of bad luck/injuries that is probably the worst in Sooner history! That being said, we cannot continue to ignore the pathetic showing we've had in recent bowl games, big games and now this, just an ordinary regular season game against a very average (at best)Nebraska team. The coaching that these kids have gotten is atrocious. Kevin Wilson is the worst offensive coordinator in Division 1 football, bar none! No one does less with more talent than Kevin Wilson. Why the hell do you run a no huddle-hurry up offense only to take the play clock inside of 5 seconds ON EVERY SINGLE PLAY! Where is the creativity? We get 3,4 & 5 star recruits and in this offense they look confused, stagnant and uncomfortable. I understand Sam has been out practically all year but this has been going on for years now. KEVIN WILSON HAS TO GO!!!
Kevin, Dallas - Nov 8, 2009 at 12:27 pm
Why is Kevin Wilson still employed by OU??
Kevin, Dallas - Nov 8, 2009 at 12:23 pm
My bigest concern is the play calling. I understand that Jones had a bad day, but I don't see any adjustments at half time. You have to work with what you have. It is easy to work with a great offensive line, but when you don't have one, you have to be creative. Seems like we need a change!!!

Most of you are a bunch of hypocrite Sooner fans, throwing redshirt freshmen under the bus and calling for the coaches head every time we lose. The fact is Landry Jones is no Sam Bradford. No one else will ever be Sam Bradford, so stop comparing Landry to Sam. The offense is gutted, this is as bad as it can be for Landry. Next year, or linemen and receivers will be more experienced and we will be alot better.

A stupid ou fan.

Danny, Vail - Nov 8, 2009 at 8:05 am
That was a game ou had no business in losing.

Nebraska is terrible. Even in Lincoln.

But your swooners swooned once again...make that 4 times already with more tough games to come.

Look at the silver lining -- Swooner fans won't embarrass themselves in a big bowl this year.
And Shreveport is an easy drive.

Time for another raise for Stoops, isn't it?!
Danny, Vail - Nov 8, 2009 at 8:01 am
I thought Tenell was out - why is he in the game? His only play is to call for a pass interferrence call. Hello coaching staff????? Jones is forcing the ball and lucky he didn't have 8-9 interceptions - horrible game - do we not have another quarterback to try out? The hail mary pass at the end of the game was pathetic! OU should have punted the ball on first down and waited for their defense to score - the offense was the worst I have ever seen even under Blake. No doubt some credit goes to the Nebraska defense, but OU looked really really bad. Losing a game to Nebraska is not the end of the world but this game was embarrassing! I am not looking forward to next year anymore - we may be in for a drought in the W column..........

was a sight to see ol' landry....trying out for the nebraska quarterback position. oh, and janice, i had to smirk when i read your comment about "how many big 12 championships" statement. it's funny you fall back on that when the national is out of grasp. i'm even surprised you put them both together, as normally, if the national is out, then you folks naturally brag on the big 12. new school record! landry throws for 5 interceptions! wonder if osu has that one yet?

You want to try that again Snakey Lights, Norman!!!

OU may be big for the State of Oklahoma but they pale in comparison to any of the SEC or BIG 10 schools (being originally from Edmond that hard for me to say because its going to cause this board to flame up) but neither of the state schools in Oklahoma are even close. I'd love to know your logic for this. The Sooners just choked and lost to a number #39 ranked Nebraska Cornhusker squad and will probably be lucky if it gets to watch a bowl on TV let alone play in one. Anybody notice a pattern here. Thats what 3-4 years in a row that the Sooners have started high in the polls and collapsed by seasons end.

Now you have the audacity to call yourself an elite program. Its bad enough that the Big XII commissioner is out that pleading for 6-6 teams to go bowls, but the Sooners have made a mockery of the entire BIG XII today

Snakey Lights, Norman - Nov 8, 2009 at 12:58 am
Kevin Wilson has the play-calling ability of a pair of scissors.

Trent Williams is a disaster. Adron Tennell is worth of Louisiana Tech. And Landry Jones just proved to be the return of Patrick Fletcher. Lastly, our coaching is absolutely horrendous. Just horrendous.

Rick, calling NU's defense decent but not overpowering is ignoring the fact that they are incredibly good. Probably would be the best in the nation if NU had any semblance of an offense.

When you consider how well their defense has done when their offense goes 3 and out or worse yet, turns the ball over 8 times in one game, you come to realize, the Huskers might just have the best defense in the nation.

Yes OU's offense isn't great, but that happens when the O-line turns over. Experience and time are critical on the O-line, now more so than ever.

Get behind Stoops, it is incredibly difficult with scholarship changes, etc. to dominate for long. OU will be very good again soon.
whoareu, OK - Nov 8, 2009 at 12:01 am
How long is OU going to keep doing the same thing over and over and over? They are so predictable that its almost laughable. Of course, they no longer have any weapons after being decimated by graduation and injuries. I hope they don't even go to a bowl this year because they are just going to get the crap embarrassed out of themselves AGAIN. They need to start making some major changes in their gameplan for next year because everyone most everyone knows how to play them and stop them now.

whoareu, OK - Nov 7, 2009 at 11:53 pm
A lot of parallels between NU and OU right now. Both teams have great defenses and not so hot offensive lines. As a Husker I like what I see happening in the program, but overall they are young and inconsistent on offense.

As for OU, same thing, pretty young on the offensive side of things, but considering the defense, they aren't that far away. Next year will be better for both.

Either way, I sure wish we could have kept OU vs NU as an every year game. Best wishes for the rest of the season.

Dear Sponge Bob Flop Flop Apologists:

Your hero has only outcoached one individual in a truly big game.....Bobby Bowden. All the rest of his big games are the wreckage of his arrogance to not make adjustments or to properly analyze his talented squads. Ok, he's still better than Howard and Blake, but these losses feel just the same as did theirs.

They did indeed stink it up in Huskerland. Jones proved he is no big-time QB. Also, I have always taken up for Wilson in the past, but this time his play calling was undeniably bad. I still wouldn't trade Stoops for any other coach anywhere, but that one assistant has lost my support. OU let a very poor football team beat them because of little offense. Five interceptions and several missed FGs...not OU football. I will wager that Stoops will make some changes. Hopefully before the entire season gets away from him. But, Ware is no prognosticator. Nobody can predict close losses.

jesus lied for you, Heisman Town - Nov 7, 2009 at 11:41 pm
Barry, I take offense to that. I am a Meteorology student at OU! LOL :P

Seriously though, my anger comes down to not just this season. A bad season...okay. Look at LSU last year. They went 7-5, kept Les Miles, and are doing very well this season with their only losses to the #1 and #3 teams in college football! But Les Miles is also 4-0 in bowl games there and doesn't repeatedly embarrass the program. Now don't take me out of context and say I want Miles here, I'm just making a point.

Bob hasn't won a BCS Bowl Game since January 1, 2003 when we beat Washington State in the Rose Bowl. 2004: lost to LSU. 2005: lost to USC. 2007: lost (in my opinion embarrassingly) to Boise State. 2008: lost to West Virginia. 2009: lost to Florida. Okay, we beat Misery twice and got two Big Two (or three), Little Ten (or nine) Championships. Some argue letting Stoops go would devastate our recruiting. What recruiting? OU is a "big name" program and will always have people like Sam Bradford who dream of playing at OU. Also, I bet if whoever came in focused all energy on recruiting in Oklahoma, assuming they could coach, we would have a national champion caliber team in two years.
Jason, Norman - Nov 7, 2009 at 11:41 pm
The coaches better not get a pay increase this year. I believe in "pay for performance" and Oklahoma's performance is horrible this year. The injuries hurt, but in no way excuse losing to a weak Nebraska squad.
Richard, New York - Nov 7, 2009 at 11:40 pm
I was watching the OU/Nebraska game from 2000 earlier this week.. & said to myself... What happened? How did we get so un athletic & predictable... We have more talent on this team then that one.. If not it's pretty close.. It really is coaching.. Coaching got em out of the mess.. & coaching got us back into it.. This offense is not prepared... The looking over trying to get approval for every single play doesn't help... We are at rock bottom.. It will not get better unless there are some major changes...
david, fresno - Nov 7, 2009 at 11:39 pm
Habern couldn't block my mother, and she is 80. With Habern at center the O-line is getting worse instead of better. The center is supposed to be the leader of the O-Line, but not this center. Without Eldridge in the game, the O-Line has no blocking, period.... On one play Jones got sacked by the entire D-Line..... For awhile I thought it was just Habern that sucked. But, now I realize it is the entire O-Line that sucks..... What pro team in their right mind would draft Trent Williams?

Granted OU has been decimated by graduation and especially injuries this year, but c'mon, one stinking field goal against a decent but not overpowering Nebraska defense?? As has been said many times before, on critical plays OU was simply outcoached, as was apparent on that last 4th down try.

I see the consolation for the OU and KU fans this year being the 2009 Toilet Bowl, put on by the Big 12 losing teams coaches ie ISU, CU, OU, KU, NU (which i might add got lucky since Sam "I'm just in a line of loser QB's" Bradford is hurting his way to the long line of QB coaches that OU has had in the past), oh yeah, and of course A&M.

adron tennell is the worst receiver in division 1, tress way cant kick a field goal to save his life and landry jones puts up big numbers against weak teams but when he plays against the big boys this is what you get. when does basketball season tip off.
kevin, commerce - Nov 7, 2009 at 11:24 pm
Well, the magic is gone, long long gone. This Landry guy is dangerous. 5 INTS???? WTH! He is really not a very good q-back, but then he is only a freshman. Maybe he will get better, but he's nowhere near being in the same league as Bradford, McCoy or Tebow when they were freshmen. I'm afraid OU is going to be like their 90's teams for awhile now. There's nothing about this team to even think they are going to get any better in the next few years. Heck, they may not even make it to a bowl game this year. Who would have thought their season would come crashing down like this. Really pitiful!
Stephen, Cypress - Nov 7, 2009 at 11:24 pm
We need to add one more ejection seat to the flaming airplane which is Sooner Football....Al Eschbach. Sponge Bob (whose better than Howard and Blake), Wilson need to go. The new guy needs to decide on the rest.

All of you apologists and "loyal" fans need to wear OU jerseys with the numbers of either "70" or "80" so no good coach will let you near the field.

Sponge Bob is the problem, and he's turned into Howard and Blake.

I do my best to not rub salt into a wound, but it amuses me how the minute OU loses, out come the "Fire ___(fill in the blank)___" cries.

Got a question for you faithful, did you ever consider that Stoops IS doing a great job with what he has and when you get right down to it, the Sooners just are not very good this year?

All said, you do have a legitimate gripe about HOW they got here if that is the problem. Pretty much sums up the validity of so called gurus like Mel Kiper, Scouts, Rivals, etc. Rating a kid coming out of high school is about as accurate as ranking college teams before week 5 or 6....or predicting the weather.

Blake Bell has a legitimate shot at starting next year. Landry built his stats on some bad teams. What did he do against the good defenses? Miami, Texas and Nebraska? The offensive line did a good enough job tonight for him to make throws. All he had to do was step up in the pocket on some of those throws. They could have played six quarters and we still wouldn't have scored a TD. And Tress Way's confidence is definitely in the tubes after that one. HE was put in some tough situations.

adron tennell couldn't catch a cold butt naked in alaska in january. this guy is the worst receiver in division 1. yet he is always on the field. if this guy is one of the best receivers we have then this team is worse than i thought. and im sorry but landry jones looked lost tonight. how many times do you have to throw a pick to 33 on nebraska before you start to look somewhere else. this season is getting worse by the week.

This one falls more on Landry than the coaches, how many times did he overthrow or throw behind the receivers? I'm a curious as to why Wilson kept calling the slant pattern, it wasn't open all night.
