NORMAN — A 12-foot python that has been missing from the Little River Zoo could be dangerous to pets, children and adults, a zoo official said Sunday.

The snake is not venomous but is extremely strong and has a powerful bite and constricting abilities, said Janet Schmid, zoo director.

The snake was stolen from its enclosure twice in three days and last went missing more than a week ago, zoo director Janet Schmid said.

"He’s a really, really nice snake,” Schmid said. "But he’s hungry, and when he’s hungry he could be dangerous.”

Employees discovered Merlin, a white and yellow albino Burmese python, missing the first time Sept. 24, Schmid said.

The snake went missing again Sept. 27.

The circumstances of both thefts indicate the thief has "inside knowledge” about the zoo and its workings, Schmid said.

Norman police officers with knowledge of the thefts were unavailable for comment Sunday.

Schmid asks anyone who knows the snake’s whereabouts is asked to call the zoo, 366-7229, or Norman police, 321-1444.
