John Rohde: Don't second-guess Sam Bradford's decision

Don't dare do it.

Don't say, "I told you so" to anyone who'll listen.

"I told you he should have gone pro after last season."

"I told you he shouldn't have tried to come back after getting hurt."

"I told you he should have had surgery."

Don't second-guess Sam Bradford.

Keep it to yourself. Nobody wants to hear it, read it or see it, particularly Bradford.

Besides, he deserves better treatment than that.

When Oklahoma's junior quarterback separated his right shoulder against Brigham Young, everybody suddenly thought they were Bradford's coach, his doctor, his father, or all the above.

Bradford is well-provided for in all these matters, so hands off.

Bradford re-injured the shoulder in Saturday's 16-13 loss to Texas, which already has many of you repeating yourselves.

Please stop before you start.

Instead, pray for two things: 1. A healthy recovery; 2. For people keep their traps shut as to what Bradford should do or should have done.

Bradford lasted just eight plays Saturday morning before being sacked by blitzing nickel back Aaron Williams.

"We're really sorry for Sam that he got hurt," Longhorns coach Mack Brown said. "What a great kid and a great player."

We are now back in a holding pattern with Bradford.

His future is uncertain. He doesn't know when he'll return, or under what circumstance.

He doesn't know, so you couldn't possibly know, so don't bother pretending you know.

Back off and give the kid some space.

We're about to get the exact same answers to the exact same questions from a month ago.

Been there, done that. Asked and answered.

During Saturday's post-game interview, Bradford was asked if this was his last OU-Texas game.

"I really can't answer that," Bradford said. "I'm not sure. I'll have to make that decision at the end of this year."

As was the case before, Bradford will explore his medical options and go from there.

When there is more news to share, Sooners coach Bob Stoops will share it.

It was the proper way to handle this matter before, and it's the proper way to handle it again.

"We were going with good information from doctors," Stoops said. "He understood the entire situation. Sam is a bright young guy. He knows what he wants, and unfortunately it just hasn't worked out very well."

From multiple accounts, Bradford was primed and ready Saturday.

"I saw him throw the prettiest 60-yard pass to finish our warm up as I've seen him throw," Stoops said.

Bradford spotted OU offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson beforehand and said, "It's going to be a great day."

"I know he was really excited to play," Wilson said. "He's played well in great games and to not have a chance to finish it, that's unfortunate."

Wilson said the 2008 Heisman Trophy winner "has been unbelievably impressive, just the way he's gone about his business working and carrying himself, the things he gives us off the field that you guys (media) don't see. An unbelievable player ... he's been a blessing to have for our football team."

There is a chance Bradford's collegiate career ended on the 34-yard line inside Cotton Bowl stadium.

Then again, maybe not.

Until we found out what the answer is, please fight the urge to repeat yourself.

Don't dare do it.

Just because it's sports involved you think you have the answers. But, truly, Sam has the answers for himself. It's his life, and he will lead it HOWEVER he wants. Just remember: you can't do anything about what Sam decides to do with himself.

So Rohde can be judge and jury on the Dez Bryant case but we cant have an opinion on Sam. Hey I feel sorry for Sam, but he made the choice to come back and the only people that wanted him to come back were being selfish. I am an OSU fan but I think Dez should go pro next year too. They do have insurance plans for this but it nothing compared to just the signing bonus these guys should recieve. They have done enough for there respective schools and deserve to go on to the next level. And are you idiot serious, quit football, nice try.
Curtis, Luther - Oct 19, 2009 at 6:04 pm
Even if Sam Bradford wants to quit football, it's still his decision. John Rohde needs to realize Sam's decision is Sam's decision alone, ultimately. I don't think Sam will quit football, though. Just making a point.
Bradley, Tulsa - Oct 19, 2009 at 3:13 pm
Remember A.D. He broke his collar bone, everyone said he was injury prone, maybe should come back for senior year. Played in the bowl, re-injured the collar bone, went seventh in draft, been relatively healthy, best back in the league. Sam needs to stay the course, get completely healthy, comeback and play in some bowl if we make on and move forward. maybe the Vikings will talk him late in the first, all OU.

Preston,

The NFL won't be there if his shoulder is torn up. Further, there is a huge physical price to be paid for playing football at a high level. You shouldn't pay that price for free if you don't have to.

Further, yes college is nice, but it is a means to an end. You don't go to college to peak in life as BMOC. You go to college to get somewhere as an adult. He can always go back and get his degree, assuming he hasn't already got it. Some day Bradford will be old, no longer a football star, and maybe suffering the physical effects of being one. He needs to make his money while he can to prepare for that day. As far as money not buying happiness, that is a judgment more easily made if you have money.

John, you talk as if the only fortune he can have is in the NFL. You talk as if happiness is somehow connected to that fortune. People are happy when they do what they're meant to do. Four years in college and a degree is what he signed up for. The NFL will be there when he's ready. Money is something to use, not something that should control any part of your life.
Preston, Bossier City - Oct 19, 2009 at 10:45 am
He is a risk. I wouldn't select him to be on my team...YES (select him)I would before the injury but not now. He may have re-injured it too bad this time. He is done and won't give a snap in the NFL if he goes after this season. He is best to wait.
Jason, Tulsa - Oct 19, 2009 at 9:47 am
I think Rohde was crying when he wrote this article. But that sucks for Sammy B nobody liked to see this, even a Gooner hater like me. Sucks.
Trent, Edmond - Oct 19, 2009 at 9:14 am
You are wrong Jason. His will get surgury. His shoulder will heal before the combine. And someone will draft him in the first round. He is too talented not to take a chance on. But, he won't go number 1 overall. He cost himself millions by coming back. He can't really come back. The problem is that if he came back and hurt his shoulder again, then he really would be looking at being drafted low. Right now, as long as he is healthy at the combine, the NFL will look at it as a bad break. He should be okay as long as he stays off the field this year and gets the surgury he needs now.

He won't go high in the draft. Who is going to select qb with a bad throwning arm and pay him millions?? Keep dreaming. He'll stay another year.

3-3 ...boomer

Jason, Tulsa - Oct 19, 2009 at 9:03 am
Any kid who can get drafted high in the NFL and stays in school one minute longer than neccesary is making a dumb move. First, as we have seen in the Dez Bryant case, the NCAA is not the player's friend. There are so many arcane rules and idiotic enforcement officials. Second, these schools make millions off of these kids risking serious injury. Why on earth would anyone risk their body to play for free when the option exists of making millions for playing the same game?

Sam Bradford won OU and Heisman and took them to two BCS bowls. He has made the school millions. He owes them absolutely nothing. It was an absured decision for him to come back and play. Life is short and football careers are shorter. When you have a chance to make your fortune, you take it. I am sorry it worked out this way for Bradford. He seems like a great kid. But, it was obscenely stupid of him to come back to school this year.

A sportswriter telling people not to second-guess... meh.
douglas, Albany - Oct 19, 2009 at 8:52 am
Seems the only reason to play football is to make money. That's what you all are saying. Bradford has said it, and I agree; There is way more to life than making money. I wouldn't be suprised to see him backk at OU next year. If I were in his shoes, I would play at OU next year. Those are experiences that you can never have again. The pro's will be there when he's ready. And whether it's 30 million, or 5 million, he can still make a good living. Money shouldn't be the sole reason for any decision.
Preston, Bossier City - Oct 19, 2009 at 8:35 am
It seems to me that Sam's career as an OU star is done for this year anyway. My guess is that Sam walks to the tune of a different drummer. This is a highly intelligent young man who knew exactly what he was doing. My guess is that Bob probably did either tell him to go pro or he left it up to him. Its a little bit different as Sam has won the Heisman. Sam, whether he plays 1 down for OU again or in the NFL will be successful. Sam knows that, Bob knows that, his family does also. These shoulder inuries really never go away, look at Chad Pennington he has hurt his 3 times. Gutsy guy but why put your body through that? He may or may not depending on the surgeons he has be able to lift his arms by the time he is 50 years ago. Sam knows this and what ever decision he made he made on his own, he is his own man would be where I put my money at. I appreciate Sam's effort to try and for the memories and play he had at OU. Its time for Landry Jones especially this year to take over this team with Sam's help and I know Sam will help him because that is the type of young man he is.

3-3 ...boomer

Jason, Tulsa - Oct 19, 2009 at 8:04 am
Stoops once said that if a player was projected to go in the top 5 he would encourage that player to go pro. Did he do that with Sam? I think not, I think Stoops is caught up in his new reputation as Big Boob Bob and relished in the fact bradford was coming back turning down millions. Bradford now looks like a china doll and there is no changing that perception. If there is a silver lining at all, he may go to a decent team in the late 1st or second round and get to sit a couple years. Too bad for Sam and Gresh, they love OU and wanted to win a NC, these guys needed better advise and that should have come from Stoops himself.

I will say it: I TOLD YOU SO. I wrote this last year. It was a stupid decision for him to return and it was SELF SERVING for the fans, the coaches and Coach Stoops. SOMEONE on the OU staff last year should have grabbed Sam, taken him aside, and said..."dude, don't come back. You won the Heisman, you had a great career here, we're going to miss you but it's not worth the risk. This is about YOU - not US - go pro and take the opportunity." I BLAME the OU coaches for not having the courage and the integrity to put HIS needs first, and not theirs. Someone at OU - Coach Stoops? - should have stepped in and NOT allowed such a boneheaded, immature decision. Bradford is NOT a grown man yet and a grown up should have persuaded him to make a grown up - not based on emotion - decision.

Kudos to John Rhode for proving that some journalists today still display ethics in their reporting. This kind of approch is what is missing in 90% of the reporting out there today. Let Sam decide what is best for himself and quit the armchair quarterbacking that has seemingly taken over the sports world these days. Good article Rhode.

Don't think so Stewie, just got back from Dallas. Also I have been to the last 5 BCS games OU played in. Of course, you probably travel everywhere with the team as well since you talk like a big supporter. Once a player is damaged goods, the world moves on and the player is forgotten. It takes a long long time in the real world to earn $28 million dollars. But, of course, I am the stupid aggie! Right, Stewie?

Sam Bradford, co-offensive coach in charge of split ends and fullbacks alongside mentor Josh Hybl. The rest eludes me at this particular moment.
