IRS to sell Sooner fan’s memorabilia

One Sooner fan’s financial plight may produce bargains for other supporters of the crimson and cream.

A slew of University of Oklahoma sports memorabilia will go under the gavel March 5, part of an Internal Revenue Service auction of property seized for back taxes.

Footballs signed by Barry Switzer, the 2000 national championship football team and Jamelle Holieway are among the treasures to be offered.

Eileen F. Foy, IRS property appraisal and liquidation specialist, said the scheduled sale has produced surprisingly little interest.

The IRS conducts the auctions by taking bids of everything in a particular lot, and then takes separate bids for each of the individual items, Foy said. Whichever method produces the most money for the IRS is the way it’s sold, she said.

The minimum bid for the entire lot is $3,260, which is about 60 percent of the appraised value, Foy said. The property includes a pool table, artwork and office furniture and equipment in addition to the sports memorabilia.

The agency charges no taxes or fees for buyers. "What they bid is what they pay,” she said.

Two other lots will be auctioned March 5, including collectable coins, jewelry and other miscellaneous items.

Never buy anthing from IRS auction. Next time it could be your property they seize and sell. Won't matter if your not guilty, it'll cost you too much to defend yourself and the IRS wins because they'll sell your stuff to others. Don't play their game.

I remember when Country Artist Dottie West's personal items were being auctioned off. She had worked her whole life and because of a bad money manager she lost everything. It doesn't seem fair with people stealing millions that the IRS can't let a guy keep is Oklahoma footballs. Maybe someone will show up like at Willie Nelson auction and buy it and give it back to him. Ha! I hope nobody bids on it. I wouldn't no matter how bad I wanted it.

Sounds about right for the IRS. GO after the little minnows and let the big fish go. Gosh, I'm glad they are on our side and watch out for our interest the way they do. How many politicians do you imagine it is that owes taxes, and a lot more taxes than this individual? Don't hear about them unless they are going to be appointed to an office then its "oh, my gosh, I just completley forgot about those taxes", and they get away with it too.

I thought tax cheating was a good thing. It is a requirement to get a job with the Obama administration.

The economy has been driven by greed and quick profit without regard to adding substance since the late 70's. Starting with the initial corporate takeovers, breaking up companies to cash them out. Then to day traders who just are trading stock to make money. It got to the point that as the economy started to slow there was not the support to keep it at the inflated price. You can't blame 1 president, or many, for the state we are in now, but they all did their small part. 9-11 should have bben the hint as to how inflated things had gotten, but the economy recovered and moved on for about 5 to 6 more years till now.

i guess that's true Martz. i was thinking my spelling of "Reagan" looked funny... but i went with it when i saw others going the same direction.
Nathan, Edmond - Feb 20, 2009 at 4:33 pm
Why are you guys talking about Donald Regan, the former Treasury secretary and chief of staff during the Reagan administration?
MartzMimic, Oklahoma City - Feb 20, 2009 at 3:50 pm
funny you should say that "stynker", because that is where i turn and why i come to the conclusions that i do. Regan put in motion part of it... then came Clinton and he took part of it away, then came "W" and he went back to Regan... now come Obama and he's gone back to Clinton. sad that people support "stupid" and it's even more sad that we have a president based soley, 100% on the color of his skin. it's even more sad that i'm "racist" because i "didn't vote for him". based on his "stimulus package", i'd say we're in for a long 4 years. what do you expect from a man that "just became proud of his country".
Nathan, Edmond - Feb 20, 2009 at 3:10 pm
How about everyone who owes not file this year? I'd say that's in the tens of millions of taxpayers, and the IRS couldn't do a damn thing about it.
Carrie, Edmond - Feb 20, 2009 at 2:59 pm
Nathan, your partisanship blinds you. This mess stared with deregulation of the banking industry in the 1980's under Ronald Regan (not that it was wrong to do so, but it did roll back rules in place since the Great Depression, and abuse of the deregulated system was it's natural conclusion). Also, "our current President" is just carrying on the Bail-out started by "our former President". Not that was wrong on the part of either. It's just simple Keynesian Economics. It's the same approach used by many Presidents in the past, and likely so in the future. Nathan, you should lay off the AM radio a little more, and learn a little about History and Economics.
stynker, Scottsdale - Feb 20, 2009 at 2:52 pm
SoonerInbred and Plainsmen, please refer to your history books... Sept. 30, 1999... the date that Clinton started this whole mess with the economy... the date when HE thought it'd be a good idea to let people without money take out large loans with pretty much no way of making the payments. it's now THESE same people that are getting bailed out by our current "president". the percentages are something like... 55%-60% of the loans taken out using "Clinton's Plan" have now gone in to forclosure AND 85%-90% of those who have forclosed are "minority"... weird. Jason, the only "treasure" you find in Seattle involves your "life partner" bending over in front of you with his pants down. enjoy your free time sipping lattes and staring at the space needle... we have your... i mean OUR team.
Nathan, Edmond - Feb 20, 2009 at 2:00 pm
The Plainsman . . . I'm sorry, but I don't listen to Rush. I'm able to read. I have a brain and I know how to use it. You should do the same. Oops . . . but I guess that would take away the time you spend standing in line at the Welfare Office, sponging off the taxpayers so that you can support all your baby-mamas and kids. Now, aside from that, Bush does not get a free pass on the economic crisis. His spending would make even the most fiscally liberal democRAT proud. However, Carter and Clinton both signed economic and housing bills that have had a HUGE negative impact on where we are today. Just like 9/11, you need to put the blame where it belongs, not just on who inherited it. And one more thing, a$$hole, who owned Congress for the last 4 years??? It sure as hell wasn't the Republicans. Try again.

Jason, Seattle - Feb 20, 2009 at 1:00 pm
Dave, you have your head up your arse. Why don't you do some research and turn off Rush? Good lord have mercy, you think that Carter? and Clinton are somehow to blame for the last 8 years of republican rule? Turn of the radio dude. You are the one who is a disgrace to Oklahoma. And oh by the way, there's more than just that one (republican) side to that story, Neel. Of course, I bet you agree with lindsay graham wanting to nationalize banks, huh? Talk about socialism! from your camp. Go figure.

Take a look at the link Ryan from Norman added. Lots of neat stuff, including the autographed print of Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle and Ted Williams.

hey soonerbornsoonerbred er idiot....Bush actually wanted to investigate the two companies which are FULLY responsible for this mess but the democrats (obama, dodd, and frank) who are the top 3 recipients of donations by these companies said they were all doing great and no reason to investigate......so you can take your bush derangment syndrome and shove it....but its sad to see this person having to get rid of this stuff because i am sure he is "life long" fan.....

how do you bid on the items?
randal, greenwood - Feb 20, 2009 at 8:37 am
Actually, JJ is absolutely right. why not give that information. It is the obvious next question anyone would ask. Instead they want you to try to call the IRS and go through trying to find the right person for the right answer. Thanks JJ

JJ just quit reading the DOK. Maybe your life you have less tension in it. Get a grip
David, Cypress - Feb 20, 2009 at 7:05 am
This story is just another example of the typical lazy and incomplete reporting that keeps being performed by the DOK. You would think the story would give info as to how someone could bid on the items. I am not intersted in doing so, but I bet there are some people that are. Does anyone at the DOK know how to craft a COMPLETE story?
