BOISE, Idaho (AP) — The Defense Department has confirmed that an Idaho soldier was killed in a helicopter crash near the Iraqi city of Tikrit.
The soldier was identified Tuesday as 29-year-old Army Chief Warrant Officer Mathew C. Heffelfinger, of Kimberly.
Military officials say Heffelfinger was one of two helicopter pilots killed in crash, which occurred Sunday. The other was identified as 24-year-old Army Chief Warrant Officer Earl R. Scott, of Jacksonville, Fla.
Both soldiers were assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment, 25th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation.
Army officials say Heffelfinger joined the military in 2000, and listed Kimberly as his home of record.
