Gift ideas suggested for genealogists

Phyllis Young, Southwest Oklahoma Genealogical Society program chairman, reminds us of holiday gifts for the family genealogist.

Her suggestions include:

→Genealogical database subscription to Ancestry.com at www.ancestry.com, Footnote at www.footnote.com, Genealogy Bank at www.genealogybank.com, Find My Past at www.findmypast.com or World Vital Records at www.worldvitalrecords.com.

Most sites offer gift subscriptions for three or six months, or one year.

→Genealogical society membership where ancestors lived. Benefits include receiving society journals which contain information pertaining to the region and possibly meeting researchers who can share family history information. →Genealogy magazine subscription for Discovering Family History, Internet Genealogy (http://familychronicle.com) or Family Tree (www.familytreemagazine.com).

Genealogy notes

→The Southwest Oklahoma Genealogical Society will meet at 7 tonight at the Lawton Public Library, 110 SW 4, Lawton.

Margaret Williams, society president, will tell the story of her 20-year search, with twists and turns along the way, to find where her great-grandmother died and was buried.

→The Central Oklahoma Chapter of Germans from Russia Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Marianne’s Rental, 225 W Britton Road. Elisabeth Karner will share her experiences during the Nazi siege of Leningrad, which killed more than 1 million inhabitants, and her family’s escape.

→The Oklahoma Home and Community Education Genealogy Group will meet at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the third-floor boardroom of the Oklahoma History Center, 2401 N Laird. Walter Stoyanoski will present "Genealogy Vacation.”
