Getting to know Pistol Pete: ‘It’s a humbling experience ...’

What’s the best thing about being Pistol Pete?

Representing OSU. You have kids who think you’re a superhero and you have men and women who have graduated from OSU who still think you’re the coolest thing and (I) reminds them of when they were in college. It’s good to know you can affect every OSU fan’s life.

Most memorable experience?

I met a Catholic priest who went to OSU when it was Oklahoma A&M and he starting crying. It showed me the huge impact (Pete) has on people’s lives.

Favorite mascot other than yourself?

Sparty, Michigan State’s. He’s awesome, I can’t help but laugh when I see him do stuff.

Favorite games to go to?

Football games are crazy. It’s a humbling experience to shoot a shotgun and have 50 to 60 thousand fans at OSU and you leading all of them.

If you had to pick one mascot to dual with in the Big 12 would it be Boomer Sooner?

It would have to be, just because of the rivalry between us.

Jim in OKC, Top Dog should be the Sooners' one and only mascot. As the first official mascot of the University, Mex the Terrier was picked up as a stray during the Mexican/American war by a young man who would eventually play on OU's football team. The ponies didn't show up until the mid 1960's. BTW, the only time OU has closed for a funeral was upon Max's death.

OU has their HorsePigs and we have our Cowboy. Which is more appropriate?

Just put Ray and those like him on ignore. Nothing bothers these immature asses more than not being recognized at all. Besides, you'll be a lot happier too.

What is a more appropriate mascot for a team called the Cowboys than a Pistol Pete? Ray, why would you call it stupid and outdated? It just goes together. I'm a Sooner fan, but I think Pistol Pete is a perfect mascot. He is as much a part of the team as Boomer and Sooner and the Schooner is. He's there to get the crowd going with guns blazing. And it makes college football exciting.

Let's just leave Ray with his lovely, modern, up-to-date, suitable for Capital One 'Mascot Contest,' cute & cuddly, fuzzy horses that look so freaking ridiculous. Assuming Ray IS an Oklahoman there's no excuse for his not knowing that Pistol Pete is the epitome of an original mascot -- unique, rooted in the history of the school (not some ad management company's idea of what would be cute), hallowed by years of tradition and not invented. The tradition of singing the "waving song" (which has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with "waving the wheat" and Kansas) goes back to OAMC and pre-World War I days, as anyone with enough internet skills to cruise the online DOK site to put trolling anti-OSU messages on articles about OSU (supposedly the non-rival, irrelevant school, right? Fixation, much, there Ray??) would be able to find out easily at OSU's website. And who can prove whether the guns-up sign and Bullet are copied from Texas Tech or not, and anyway, who cares? Both are very appropriate for a land-grant college proud of its roots and traditions. Ray, I can only hope that your miserable morning of this miserable day in your miserable life started out well because you were able to demonstrate your ignorance and idiocy in a public forum like the DOK's website.

What's with Pete's big head? Does he have uremic leontiasis ossea?
Louis Friend, Norman - Nov 5, 2009 at 7:33 am
And speaking of stealing traditions, didn't OU steal their fight song from Yale?

Yeah Ray, and OU's Top Dog is something to be proud of. When I think of a Sooner the first thing that comes to mind is a dog.

What a stupid, outdated mascot. With osu's ability and willingness to steal other schools traditions, (Tech loser hand sign, Kansas waving wheat, Tech's horse) they should have been on the lookout for a better mascot.
At least osu has the cow pen gate to run out of.

Pistol Pete will always be the ultimate connection for alums with the university. Kids aren't the only ones who adore him and what he represents. My favorite Christmas card picture was the year I got to pose with Pistol Pete at the OSU-UCLA game in LA....and I was in my 40's! Go Pokes!
