Garth Brooks no longer retired

Oct 15Garth Brooks says he’s coming out of retirement. George Lang and...

Brooks, 47, said at a news conference in Nashville that he will end his retirement.

The move has been rumored in the music industry for weeks.

"We're going to take the retirement roof off over our head, and I already feel taller," Brooks said Thursday.

Brooks said he has no immediate plans and will see how things go in the coming years.

"As for touring, if I can't eat it, sleep it, breathe it, then it ain't me," Brooks said.

Brooks retired in 2000 to spend more time with his three children. He's occasionally popped up in special appearances at awards shows and charity events, but has mostly stayed out of the limelight.

In an interview with The Associated Press last year, Brooks said he would like to return to the road once he raises his children.

The Recording Industry Association of America honored Brooks in 2007 with a career award after he passed Elvis Presley to become the top-selling solo artist in U.S. history. At the time, he had sold more than 123 million albums.

Brooks' last studio album, "Scarecrow," was released in 2001. His three-disc compilation "The Ultimate Hits" finished 10th on Billboard's 2008 list of albums and showed Brooks still has the muscle he displayed in the 1990s.

Brooks divorced his wife, Sandy Mahl, in 2001 and married fellow country star Trisha Yearwood in 2005. The couple lives in Oklahoma.

Headliner: "Garth Sings the Osmonds Goldie-Oldies"

Wait, Wait, I've got it! Garth sings (yodels) the National Anthem at the opening game of the World Series, with wife Trisha doing the sign-language version along side! Yes, Yes, that's how I would market him.
Boomer, Washington - Oct 16, 2009 at 9:31 am
If Garth would take off the hat, trim the stache, he could look like Rush Limbaugh!
Boomer, Washington - Oct 16, 2009 at 9:26 am
He's not touring. He's gonna be a Vegas lounge singer at Wynn Las Vegas.

Saw him in 1998 in Salt Lake City, had third row seats by the stage...I've seen a lot of concerts (over 50), and this one was by far the most entertaining and engaging...plus the tickets were $25, you can't beat that.
Cletus, Mayberry - Oct 15, 2009 at 10:10 pm
Patrick, do you not understand the concept of "man crush"? It just means he's your "hero"
Rhonda, Euless - Oct 15, 2009 at 4:17 pm
Nah. I think I'll slip on down to the Oasis.
stinkerpants, Oklahoma City - Oct 15, 2009 at 3:06 pm
Looks like OK, Lahoma (Wow, that's creative! Did you think that one up all by yourself?) has nothing better to add to the conversation other than to play out his own dirty little homo-erotic fantasies right here in front of everybody. Way to contribute OK. Now, for anybody with a mentaility over 14 years old that wishes to discuss the subject of this article...

Wish I had musical ability, but I've got enough to know trite hooks and meoldies when I hear one.
David, Norman - Oct 15, 2009 at 1:08 pm
To all of you complaining that Garth didn't make "real" country music....so what? He made music that sold and made him hundreds of millions of dollars. It's nothing any one of you on here wouldn't do if you had any talent whatsoever.
Patrick, Edmond - Oct 15, 2009 at 1:04 pm
Yawn, more fake country music.
David, Norman - Oct 15, 2009 at 12:48 pm
This also just in.....scientists have discovered the mating habits of the fruit fly.

Patrick, Same goes for the Cowboy Hall of Fame. I went to see who the cowboys were but was disappointed.
Mostly actors.
Floyd, Oklahoma - Oct 15, 2009 at 12:27 pm
His kids are not grown yet. That makes his earlier retirement annoucement bogus. He must need to money. I bet he lost a lot in the divorce from his first wife.
Benjamin, Oklahoma City - Oct 15, 2009 at 12:26 pm
It cracks me up when singers "retire" and then come out of "retirement". All it really is is they stopped making music and now they're making it again...lol
Stephanie, Midwest City - Oct 15, 2009 at 12:24 pm
Before he hits the road he needs to make a... B double E double R U N.

Good, I miss Garth....and I don't even like country music, but I love him and his personality.Say what you want, he's doing it and we all are not..
Tracy, OKLAHOMA CITY - Oct 15, 2009 at 12:05 pm
"Garth's the leader of the punk assed FAKE cowboys! What a counterfeit!" OK...name me five C&W singers EVER that were "real" cowboys. And I don't mean the gentleman ranchers that just own huge spreads of land and a few horses and cattle that they have the hired hands take care of. I mean somebody that was a "real" cowboy before he ever bacame a singer and continued to do it themselves afterwards.

Patrick, Edmond - Oct 15, 2009 at 12:03 pm
Now, now. He's got friend...where the whisky drowns and the beer chases your blues away. Come on, everybody!
stinkerpants, Oklahoma City - Oct 15, 2009 at 11:59 am
Barry-Why would you make such a gross generalization on all celeb/athletes? Do you REALLY think they are all drugged/drunk? Do you REALLY think the only reason they come back is for the money? Many of them come back because they just love what they do and want to keep doing it as long as possible. Sure, there are plenty of them that are addicts of one kind or another and blow their big piles of money and there more than a few that just can't give up the fame and adulation. But do you think Brett Favre hasn't made enough money playing football and doing Wrangler commercials? You really think Tony Bennett is still singing in his 80's because he needs the money? You have such a crass view of the world sometimes it's amazing. Sheesh.

Why?

Great role model. Cheated on his wife with Tricia Yearwood and denied they were involved. Then, *BLAMMO* he and Tricia were living together. Yep, Okies should defend Garth for his family values since he wanted to spend time with his kids.

He always said he planned to make music again but just wanted to raise his kids correctly. He shouldn't be slammed for that. He still was kind of around every few years to remind everyone he's still here. I don't think he'll have a difficult time coming back. There really hasn't been anyone on his level since he left.

The bitterness and jealousy are hilarious...yet sad. Why even make a comment if it's stupid? Garth said years ago he would not tour again until his kids were in high school. Sounds like he was true to his word. And no, myers...your Mo Beta shirts will not be cool again.
Chris, Jones - Oct 15, 2009 at 10:06 am
Myers, no, not at all. burn them. But keep the Beretta.

stinkerpants, Oklahoma City - Oct 15, 2009 at 10:02 am
Celebrity/pro athlete retirement = I'm tired/drugged out/too drunk to participate in scheduled activities. I have a ton of jack so I do not need to do anything that even remotely resembles work.

Celeb/athlete "unretirement" = Guess I did not have as much money as I thought I did.
Barry, Fort Collins - Oct 15, 2009 at 9:58 am
He's country and he's rock and roll. He's like aerosmith with a big ass belt buckle, he's led zeppelin with a can of skoal, he's donnie and he's marie!!!! Take him campin' with ya.
David, Moore - Oct 15, 2009 at 9:56 am
Gary, you're an idiot. He's been retired for 9 years. That doesn't sound like waffling to me.

So glad you're back Garth. So much better to have Garth as the face of country music in Oklahoma instead of that no-talent in Norman.
