Four questions on OU football

Published: October 6, 2008

How will the Red River Rivalry play out nationally this week?

The first indicator of heavy hype is the booking by ESPN for its College GameDay crew in Big D. But expect, too, a full week of OU-Texas talking points across all forums.

Bottom line: The Sooners and Longhorns are both 5-0, with OU No. 1 and UT No. 5. And it’s easily the major matchup of the weekend — perhaps the season (so far), since Southern Cal-Ohio State ended up a dud — as the only game pairing top 10 teams.

There are only two other games matching Top 25 squads.

On top of all that, it’s OU-Texas.

Big Tex and Boomer Sooner. The Cotton Bowl and the ferris wheel. Bevo and the schooner. The ramp.

Everyone’s paying attention.

What’s the take south of the Red River, where Mack Brown usually weighs in with something good?

"It’s fun,” Brown told reporters after Texas clobbered Colorado 38-14 in Boulder on Saturday night. "It’s what Texas and OU have wanted forever. We’ve had it most of the time, and we have it back — 90,000-some fans, plus GameDay, plus everybody in America watching the game at 11 o’clock.

"They’re real good. They are very deserving of No. 1. And we’re getting better.”

Who had the better statement game Saturday, OU or Texas?

Neither disappointed, but Texas opened more eyes with its easy run through the Rocky Mountain foothills.

The Sooners were supposed to win and win big, which they did. They got in and got out in businesslike fashion.

The Longhorns won in Boulder, where West Virginia couldn’t a few weeks ago and the Sooners didn’t last season.

Is the Sooner defense due a boost from the return of tackle DeMarcus Granger and end Frank Alexander?

Both have been progressing from injuries, and Bob Stoops said last week that Granger (foot) and Alexander (arm) could rejoin practice today. Sunday, Stoops hesitated to rule either in or out for the Longhorns.

"I don’t know if I’m optimistic or skeptical or what,” Stoops said. "There’s a chance of it. We’ll just see as we go through the week.”

I don't think it will be that high. Stoops has shown a lot of patience in games that are blown out. Would you blame him? There is a lot of football left and why risk the injuries? That something that has plaqued OU at the end of the season.
