NORMAN — It’s hard to believe, but Thanksgiving is less than three weeks away. Soon, the holidays will be in full swing.

As stores continue to fill their shelves with Christmas decorations (some began putting out holiday items weeks ago) and children begin to write letters to Santa Claus, we will be reminded that there are people less fortunate who need our help. Salvation Army bell ringers will be outside stores with red buckets. Angel trees and toy donation buckets will go up around town. Other organizations will ask us for nothing other than a few hours of our time.

For those who tend to get swept up in the season and forget to make a donation, or just don’t have the time to volunteer, Sooner Mall is one place making it more convenient to give.

A recent online survey conducted by General Growth Properties, the corporation that operates Sooner Mall, revealed that 84 percent of consumers would rather give than receive. In response, the company started the Giving Spree. Shoppers can go to www.thegivingspree.com and make a donation to their favorite charity.

Ten local charities are listed on the Web site, including the American Red Cross, Heart of Oklahoma Chapter; Bethesda Inc.; Health for Friends; Second Chance Animal Sanctuary; and the United Way of Norman. Brief information about each organization is listed on the Web site.

With a minimum donation of $5, shoppers will receive discounts from retailers that can be used at Sooner Mall on Nov. 15.

In addition to offering a way to help others, the Web site features holiday tips, advice and resources.

It also lists information about upcoming holiday events at the mall, such as pet photos with Santa from Nov. 24-Dec. 15.
