Fired president Larry Jones files lawsuit against Feed the Children
Published: November 11, 2009
Larry Jones is seeking in a lawsuit to be reinstated as president of Feed The Children.
Jones filed a wrongful termination lawsuit Tuesday in Oklahoma County District Court. He alleges his dismissal was "for reasons of personal malice and spite and not for any authorized cause.” Five directors on the charity’s board fired him Friday. Jones is asking for "reinstatement of his position,” compensation for the lost value of his contract and for "dignitary harms,” and punitive damages against each director. Defendants in the lawsuit are Feed The Children and directors Rick England, Leo Fundaro, C. Earnest Wyatt, Dan Mugg and Mary Schrick. He also wants a judge to issue a temporary restraining order, barring the charity from using his name, likeness or voice unless he signs off on the use. He told the charity on Friday to stop using his name but alleges it still is . A hearing on his request is set for 1:30 p.m. Nov. 17. The charity’s attorneys said Tuesday, "There is no need for a temporary restraining order because we are doing everything possible to get his name and photo off of anything to do with Feed The Children. … We are as interested in getting his name off as he is.” Jones founded the Oklahoma City-based charity 30 years ago. He has called it his ministry. He became the face of the organization through his appearances on frequent televised fundraising appeals. His attorney, Mark Hammons, said Friday, "To be taken away from something that you create yourself and that you have so much time, so much energy and so much emotion invested in, it’s just awful.” The charity did not disclose why Jones was fired. However, the dismissal came after Jones admitted having hidden microphones placed in three executives’ offices last April. Jones was at odds with those executives and most of the directors. Jones contends he violated no laws because he intended to record only his own conversations. The owner of the company that installed the microphones told police employees could not get a recorder to work.

Philanthropy Today and Non-Profit Times the two most respected NGO newpaper/web-sites only report report self generated/third party articles but do not do comparative analysis.
As an example of what all this means-of the approximate 1 billion dollars raised 90% was Gift in Kind and only 10%-$100,000,000 was cash from donors. Of the cash raised approximately 75% or $75,000,000 was paid to third parties for fund-raising i.e. TV, mailings, photo shoots etc. Therefore Charity Navigator's rating looks good since they show only 7.5 % used for fund-raising ($75,000,000 of the total 1 billion raised). But when you consider the ratio without GIK (that are donated items like eyeglasses/books etc. from large corporations) the percentage of fund-raising costs to total cash received is approximately 75%. No other charity even comes close to this huge fund-raising cost. BTW-this only leaves approximately $25,000,000 for all overhead, operating expenses etc. AIP looks at the big picture and that's why they rate FTC so low.
On another issue-why did the old directors file suit in the first place. Please read the minutes of the FTC board meetings posted at NewsOK. Can one disagree with the rules the board for months had been trying to implement in order to control Larry's spending like wasted dollars on Allen and $250,000 to golfer Lee Janzen to wear a FTC t-shirt? How about the unapproved spending of approximately $75,000,000 (75% of all cash raised) for fund raising paid to Affiliated Media et.al. a company, who also employed Allen and owned by 2 former FTC employees i.e. Joe and Van.
Larry, under the cover of darkness and without the knowledge of his old board, attempted a "coup" using his buddies for a new board. Do you wonder why NONE of the new board guys, Larry's friends, who got thrown out by the Judge have not spoken up for Larry? The judge agreed with the old directors and Larry lost. So, to be fair, some would say maybe FTC shouldn't pay their legal fees but Larry and his "coup" buddies should, since he/they started the whole mess by violating the trust of the old board.
You say the board fired you because YOU convinced the judge not to pay their legal fees? That excuse is WEAK!!! VERY WEAK!!!! Why?? Because the board months ago wanted you to take a sabbatical so you attempted a “coup” to replace them with your buddies. But, the Judge threw you out of court and it didn’t work and the original board got stuck with the legal bills for your “coup”. Man, you should pay their legal bills, that is if you have any money that didn’t come from your phony appeals for “hungry children”.
You say they fired you because of the wire-taps” and you claim they weren’t illegal?
Now come on Larry, if you’re telling the truth and all you wanted to do legally was record your own conversations with the 3 key officers you “bugged” to protect yourself-why didn’t you just put a recorder on your own phone and/or carry a concealed tape recorder with you when you were in meetings with them?? Got an answer for that????? The police aren’t stupid and they along with the DA are gonna get you.
And now you have approved your lawyers demand to remove all your pictures etc.from FTC stuff. Hey man, lots of great employees and wonderful donors MADE FTC-not you. All you did was screw it up! To me Larry you’re sounding like a very un-Christian, vindictive person and you should be ashamed!!
Quit making excuses that don’t make sense and stop blaming others! You did all this to yourself and drug your family, trusting donors and employees into an inferno!!
And, stop using your worn-out “hungry children” phrase to gain sympathy. Trust me, the children will survive as they can live without your truckloads of bottled water, soda pop etc. that you count as food.
The caring folks in this world will now give their donations to “reputable, accountable” humanitarian organizations and the children will be truly served!
Be a MAN Larry and take your medicine! And by the way-since you never, ever express pain about what they have gone through-your own family is paying an unbelievably heavy price for your ego. Stop abusing them!!!!!
Looking at your previous postings, if you are a "Christian" then turds don't stink.
This does not sound like passionate men or "Christlike Behavior"
It is sad. The root of all evil is the love of money.
You shouldn't give to any church organization because all that happens with the money is that these so called pastors go and splurge on luxury items for themselves.
There are some (very few) churches that actually are okay.
Don't you love making a millionaire rich?
As far as FTC, I wished the idea and the public perception of the mission well, not so much as the organization.
But Larry Jones is a ego manic on par with the likes of Bennett,McClendon,Gaylord.
DOK took so long to get board members names ,shouts the lack of research, investigative journalism or maybe its the lack of care in doing anything community and honorable of the profession.
Its better for a Baptist church to bypass the BGCO and send funds directly to independent missionaries. That way 100 percent of the funds reach the field. If the 10 percent of the funds that leave 3800 N. May go to Richmond, VA, they will take another 9 cents for their lucrative salaries out there. Therefore if a church sends a dollar to 3800 N. May for missions, then 1 cent of it makes it to the field. Direct Missions is the way to go!
