Surprises abound at local events

The Oklahoma victory over Texas on Saturday in men’s basketball was surprising. Seeing the New Orleans Saints outscore the mighty Indianapolis Colts’ offense 31-17 in the final three quarters of Super Bowl XLIV was stunning.

But seeing Abe Vigoda on a Super Bowl commercial Sunday night was the real sports-related stunner of the weekend. The 88-year-old former "Barney Miller” and "Godfather” actor, often rumored to have died years ago, was alive and kicking in a funny Snickers TV ad with Betty White that premiered during the game.

Also alive and well this week:

• The 1930s at the University of Oklahoma. In addition to the art exhibit on the New Deal era showing at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, the University Theatre’s two-week production of "To Kill a Mockingbird” is scheduled to premiere Friday at the Max Weitzenhoffer Theater.

• The local political arena, which began Monday with a Norman candidates’ forum at City Hall. It continues today in Purcell, where Jayme Shelton and Bill Law are competing for the at-large fifth seat on the City Council.

• The politics blog that recently premiered on NewsOK.com. It has comments and notes aplenty on the local, state and federal political scenes.

• Wintry weather, for this week and an additional four, according to Punxsutawney Phil. Brrr.

• The aforementioned Oklahoma men’s basketball team, which kept its tiny NCAA Tournament chances alive with a big win over Texas.

The team will host Texas Tech tonight before traveling to Stillwater on Saturday.

• The tradition of student giving at OU.

Fresh off an overnight student-led community fundraiser at the McCasland Field House on Saturday night to benefit the American Red Cross’ Haitian earthquake relief effort, the annual OU Dance Marathon to benefit the Children’s Hospital Foundation will be Friday at the Huston Huffman Center. Organizers hope to raise $50,000 this year.

• The annual Pink and Black Ball. It will benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation on Feb. 20 at Oklahoma Memorial Union.
