BETHANY — A small tornado that damaged the pediatric physician clinic at The Children’s Center on May 7 started the conversation about building a safe room at the center, 6800 NW 39 Expressway.
The 3,000-square-foot safe room will hold 200 workers and 100 children, said Jamie Davis, communications and marketing coordinator. It will withstand an F4 tornado. When it’s not being occupied during a storm, the room will be used as a recreation room where children can play, communications director Scott Copenhagen said. The project is expected to cost about $2.5 million. Davis said $2.3 million has been raised and about $250,000 is needed before the project can begin. The Children’s Center is a nonprofit pediatric hospital that provides services for children who have complications at birth, congenital defects or brain and spinal cord injuries.
