Most folks anticipate a break in spring

NORMAN — When I was in school — at least, until I was in college — there was no such thing as spring break. We got the Friday before Easter off and that was it.

When I started college, I was amazed that every spring, for no good reason I could see, we were given a week off; as if we really had been working too hard and needed a rest. College also meant two weeks off at Christmas and another week or two off between semesters. I had never had so much time off.

If it weren’t for my parents insisting that I eventually graduate and get on with the rest of my life, I might still be in college.

The harsh reality is that in real life, there are no spring or fall breaks or extended time off at Christmas. There’s vacation time, and a few holiday "days” thrown in, and that’s it. In some professions, there’s precious little of that.

In Norman, however, residents look forward to spring break, whether they have the week off or not. Spring break means traffic congestion clears a bit; there’s parking to be had on Campus Corner, and no wait to get a table at some of the city’s most popular restaurants.

If the weather is fine, spring break also lures children and teens outdoors. As I work, I enjoy hearing their chatter and laughter as they pass my house, many of them walking, some riding bikes and quite a few traveling on skateboards.

Here’s the rub: My dog doesn’t consider skateboarding a civilized way to travel. She heartily disapproves and simply cannot let a single skateboarder go by without voicing her concern.

She’s a little dog, or I’m sure the skateboarders would cringe in fear every time she races to the curb and begins to sonically chastise them. If barks could be translated into words, she would be saying, "Stop that! Stop that right now! You get off those ridiculous boards on wheels and walk by my house in a civilized manner.”

They laugh, and I get tired of yelling at her to be quiet. There’s really no stopping her. So, spring break on my street might be a little noisy next week.
