EDMOND — The Edmond City Council tonight voted unanimously to call a $31.5 million bond election to build a new Public Safety Center.

Voters will decide Nov. 4 whether to increase their property taxes to construct a new police headquarters, 911 center and emergency management operations.

The new 83,068-square-foot center would be built on six acres on the northeast corner of Kelly Avenue and Main Street, about three-fourths mile from the present police station at 23 E First St. in downtown Edmond.

City officials have been trying for three year to agree on the new center. The present police headquarters has been declared too small and the building can’t be renovated or expanded.

Property owners with a $100,000 home can expect to pay just over $500 in additional property taxes over 10 years. City officials estimate the cost will be around $4.25 more a month for 10 years.

The new center is expected to answer Edmond’s needs for 20 years.

Council members had worked for six months to find a way to build the new center downtown and shave the price down below $30 million.

They were still hesitant to vote for the new center with the $31.5 million price tag. The size of the building was reduced from the original 109,800-square-feet by 24.3 percent.

Councilman Charles Lamb called the project the biggest one the city has undertaken.

“We’re losing ground if we continue to wait,” Lamb said. “I’m ready to wrap it up.”

Edmond cops already do a fine job of padding the city's pocketbook with their hell-bent style of busting everything that moves with traffic tickets. I can't tell you the number of stories I've heard of undeserved tickets... or worse, tickets that were the result of errors that the officer (and city judge) refused to admit, leaving the wronged citizen no recourse other than to pay the ticket. I appreciate the job that Edmond (and all) police officers do from a civil servant point of view, but as far as giving them extra help that involves me giving my money to them... forget it. They do just fine at getting money from their citizens.

I noticed that too. These types of typos occur all the time in this paper.
