Stephen White's "Dead Time” (Dutton, $25.95), part of a series featuring Boulder, Colo., psychologist Alan Gregory, begins with a group of young people on a summer hike to the floor of the Grand Canyon. As they are about to leave, a man asks whether they've seen his girlfriend. Several had seen her the night before, but she seems to have vanished.

Some years later, Lisa, one of the six hikers, has agreed to be a surrogate mother for Eric, another of the six, and his fiancee, Merideth, Alan Gregory's ex-wife.

Now, pregnant Lisa has disappeared, and Merideth, who lives in New York, calls on Gregory to help her find Lisa. The quest takes him to Los Angeles and into the lives of the six Grand Canyon hikers. But it also takes him into secrets, danger and death.

Many of the chapters alternate between Gregory and Merideth with a lot of soul searching, introspection and psychological delving. But the characters are great, and the excitement is sustained.
