STILLWATER — During Oklahoma State’s Homecoming and Hoops on Oct. 16, Cowgirls newcomer Toni Young’s one-handed dunk was one of the highlights of the night.

It was also a perfect illustration of what to expect from the 2009-10 version of OSU’s women’s basketball team.
Lots of new faces, lots of athleticism.
"This is the most athletic and deepest team we have had at Oklahoma State,” Cowgirl coach
Kurt Budke said. "They are flying up and down the court. We do have some athletes out there that can go.”
Featuring a roster that includes nine newcomers, the Cowgirls get their season under way tonight when they host Washburn in the first game of a women’s/men’s doubleheader at
Gallagher Iba Arena beginning at 6 p.m. The men will face Dillard (La.) after the women’s game.
OSU has some experienced players returning including preseason
All-Big 12 performer
Andrea Riley joining
Ally Clardy at guard along with
Tegan Cunningham at forward and
Megan Byford at center.
Young, a former
Del City standout forward joins forward
LaSharra Riley, guard Lakyn Garrison and guard/forward
Precious Robinson as key newcomers.
Riley is as quick and dynamic with the ball in her hands as any player in the Big 12. The senior from
Dallas is the perfect lead guard for this year’s athletic team.
"It will open up Andrea this year,” Byford said. "We have so many different threats and it gives everybody an opportunity. It makes us a more complete team.”
And the increased depth and athleticism will allow Budke the ability to do things he’s hasn’t done during his four-year tenure in Stillwater.
"You are going to see the fastest team we have had,” Budke said. "You are going to see a different defensive pressure from us. You going to see some different looks you haven’t seen from the Cowgirls.”
