Teaching to live life
within financial means
Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Central Oklahoma offers several types of free counseling by certified credit counselors. Counseling includes budget counseling for those who need to learn to live within their means, credit counseling to review credit reports and suggestions for improving spending habits. The company offers debt counseling for those needing a debt repayment plan.
The company also has a low-cost, debt-management program under which clients can receive reduced interest rates, lower payment amounts, waived over-the-limit fees and waived late charges on many major credit card providers. "Nearly 30 percent of our clients who come to us for personalized credit counseling qualify for our debt-management plan,” Cooper said.
Consumer Credit Counseling Service offers 18 classes in the community on financial topics such as budgeting, housing, premarital planning, getting out of debt, teens and money, compulsive shopping, divorce recovery and others, Cooper said. Those classes are available as workshops, webcasts and in other formats, Cooper said.
"CCCS offers financial literacy programs, individualized credit counseling, housing counseling and our Debt Management Plan to over 20,000 Oklahomans annually,” Cooper said.
In 2008, 95 percent of the company’s clients who were behind on their mortgage payments who took advantage of free foreclosure prevention counseling avoided foreclosure, Cooper said.
