SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — Dominican authorities have arrested a Canadian missionary accused of sexually abusing orphan boys in the Dominican Republic and neighboring Haiti.
Joao Jose Correira Duarte is a Portuguese-born orphanage administrator. He was arrested Tuesday at a hotel in the resort city of Puerto Plata.
National drug control agency chief Rolando Rosado Mateo says Duarte began working in Haiti in 1995. He was arrested under a Canadian warrant and was to be extradited to Canada this week.
Authorities have arrested a number of men in recent years accused of taking advantage of the deep poverty in Haiti to abuse children.
