Cameron Kenney could be just what Sooners need
OU Football Receiver a playmaker

NORMAN — One of the main reasons wide receiver Cameron Kenney signed with Oklahoma over Georgia was the opportunity to catch passes from a Heisman Trophy winner.

Four games into the season, Kenney is yet to catch a pass from Sam Bradford, who has missed the last 3½ games with a shoulder injury.

But whether Bradford comes back this week for Baylor or backup Landry Jones makes his fourth start at quarterback, the Sooners need Kenney to build off his breakout performance at Miami

In the worst way.

With tight end Jermaine Gresham out for the year and slot receiver Ryan Broyles sidelined for at least this week with a fractured shoulder blade, the Sooners are desperately searching for playmakers at receiver.

Kenney showed he’s capable of filling that role, after snagging six passes for 72 yards and a touchdown against the Hurricanes.

"I thought Cameron Kenney really showed some signs that are really positive for us,” coach Bob Stoops said. "It was really exciting to see him make some plays when we needed him to. You hope it will continue. It needs to.”

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Kenney, who transferred to OU from Garden City (Kan.) Community College, turned heads during fall camp with his quickness and strength.

"He’s explosive, strong, likes to compete,” said wide receivers coach Jay Norvell. "That’s what we liked about him when we recruited him.”

With OU trying to rely on its veterans, Kenney didn’t play in the opener against Brigham Young. But since, he has started the last three games.

After catching three passes for 38 yards combined in wins over Idaho State and Tulsa, Kenney finally emerged in Miami.

Following Broyles’ injury on the Sooners’ second play from scrimmage, Kenney became Jones’ top target.

"The opportunity, I’ve been waiting for it for a long time,” he said. "I was fortunate enough to make the plays.”

His biggest play was his first.

On the final play of OU’s opening drive, Jones rolled right and tossed a pass Kenney caught over the outstretched hands of two Hurricane defenders to put the Sooners up, 7-0.

"Everything happened so fast, I really couldn’t tell you what happened,” Kenney recalled. "I looked up, saw I was open. Out of nowhere, here comes the ball. I just jumped up and — I didn’t even catch it that well — but I grabbed onto it like a loaf of bread.

"I didn’t really know what happened until I got to the sidelines and saw it up on the Jumbotron.”

After the touchdown, Kenney admitted he played with more confidence as the game went along, coming up with a pair of huge catches in the second half.

He snagged a 12-yard grab on an out-route that converted a third-and-long into a first down. Later, Kenney reeled in a pass on a hook pattern, broke a tackle and turned upfield.

The 26-yard gain set up OU’s only other touchdown.

"I had a real good feeling he was going to play good; you knew it was a matter of time,” Norvell said. "In fact, before the game, I told (graduate assistant) Joey Halzle, that kid is going to play his tail off tonight.

"He’s learning, he’s still got to get a lot better. But he took a big step on Saturday night.”

What do you mean less talanted players? OU has much more talant than Miami and most other teams. We were outcoached again. Why in the hell are we throwing 3 yard passes when it is third and 8? Why after Murray is running all over Miami do we switch to Brown on the next series exclusively when he had a very lackluster day minus one long run? One of the best plays of the game was a screen pass to Murray. We should be instituting this with all the runningbacks and or tight ends that seem to have disappeared from OU? - not wait until 3rd down to do it. The deep pass threat is gone - we don't have break away speed receivers or an experienced quarterback, but we can go back to ball control with a very talanted QB and some excellent RB, and put some points on the board. Were are the receivers at OU? We have two great QBs did anyone think to recruit some receivers? We went into the season with one receiver and one tight end, and 2-3 to pick another starter. Surely they should have expected someone might get hurt - then what. Well now both are hurt and OU's great QB are sitting ducks with a struggling line to protect them. It is time to either get the personell in place to run the system in place or switch systems. The beginning of the game OU's defense dominated Miami - Miami made some changes and moved the ball and scored on OU. What changes did OU make to counteract Miami's changes? We need screen passes, QB rolling out so he is not blindsided again, we need some QB running with the ball if all the receivers are covered, we need Bradford in the game playing at least part of the game instead of worrying about his NFL chances. OU could lose 3-4 more games this year if it doesn't make some changes soon, and a salary reduction would not be out of the question for one of the highest paid coaches putting a 6-6 team on the field.

Jeff...it is throw go back to OSU and ask for your money back. Paul, nice real good since you can even win one division title let alone a conference. Bob - your argument makes so much since...lets get killed by 21 so we can have a chance to win. BYU we pushed the field goal. Miami, we fumble on our 2 trying to pass. Small breakdowns by the players (not the coaches) caused the losses. Execution wins games. All of you OSwho lame o's watch TAMU beat your "no dez" team. Start counting the losses. Good luck on a bowl game this year.

I still haven't given up hope of the Big 12 champtionship! At least we can win the south if we beat Texas. There's a lot of hope out there with Sooner Magic.

Fire Kevin Wilson. His play calling is worthy of a swamp.

Paul this one's for you. An OU 2-2 team without it's key playmakers will still beat the aggies again this year!

One of the most important rights of a fan is to be a Monday morning Quarter Back. We could never handle the pressure of coaching or the violence of the game so we have the right to scream obscenities from our seats and make better coaching decisions after the fact. BUT, some of you people remind me of the ancient Hebrews. Once released from Egyptian captivity they began whining that they had it better as slaves. I'm wondering what's next... Build a golden statue of Howard Schnellenberger and demand John Blake be rehired?

"Look back over the past 10 years -
57-4 since 1998 at home .934 percentage #1 in the nation
6 Big 12 conference titles
7 big 12 South Division Titles
BCS National Championship Appearances = 4 , 1 title"----Yeah, and look back at the Buffalo Bills..went to the big game 4 years running and got beat every time...difference is, they don't talk about that, cause when it comes to winning games, what happened in the past don't mean squat. You gooner fans ought to take note of that.

Folks there is nothing wrong with the Sooner program. It just drives me crazy to see all the bandwagon fans jump on here with all their gloom and doom and call for the coaching staffs heads.

Do we want to win all the games, you bet your butt we do. Will we take a loss sitting down, heck no. but believe you me, the coaches feel the same way. These guys know what they are doing, they wouldn't be in the position they are in if they didn't.

Look back over the past 10 years -
57-4 since 1998 at home .934 percentage #1 in the nation
6 Big 12 conference titles
7 big 12 South Division Titles

All of these times we won the titles the other years we were there competing for it. So I would say Sooner nation is in good shape.

Anyone want to go back to the Blake years, I think not

I only have one piece of advice (unsolicited) for the offensive (and I mean that sincerely) coaching staff. Open it up, what the heck have you got to lose at this point? I would rather get beat by 21 trying to win a game than lose by one point trying not to lose the game. Give these guys a chance to win!

I agree with Bob and Jiohdee. If our coaches are just going to recruit and not do a good job on game day, then maybe OU should slice their paychecks in half. When you lose talented players and have weaknesses, coaches have to find a way to get first downs and manage those weakness. Not crawl into a shell and handcuff the players you do have. Instead, we prefer to act as if we still had an awesome line and had Mark Clayton to pick up 8 yards after the catch. The coaches lack of accountability, their default excuse of "execution" and "discipline," is getting old and definitely shows a coaching staff either lacking insight or lacking a connection with their players.

I agree Jiohdee and Bob Stoops admits it after every game. "We were outcoached..." Brian, anyone can look like a genius when his team lines up against inferior talent, that isn't what these guys are being paid top dollar for. Injuries I understand have played a part, USC doesn't seem to have as much a problem. Penalties, all on the coaches. You can't have it both ways. Results speak, and the results are that when our offense, Bradford or Jones, goes up against equal talent we put them behind the eight ball with our coaching staff. But, let's forget all that and just let our defense go win these games for us. Wait a minute...nevermind. Defense winning games when on the line this year 0-2. I don't think anyone should be fired, but they can't continue to do the same thing and expect different results. Changes need to be made in the offensive game planning and in-game play calling. If they need someone with playstation chamionship experience, so be it.

Bwahahahaha!!

The headline of Tramels latest blog entry:

"College Football Week 5: Train wreck in Oklahoma" "Nuff said, gooner fans.

A small slice of Tramels "10 biggest LOSERS of the week":

"4. Bob Stoops: First, Stoops couldn’t win the big one. Now he can’t win the close one, after Miami’s 21-20 victory over Oklahoma pinned the Sooners with their second one-point defeat this season."

Yeah ! Now THIS is the kind of reporting I want to see about the gooners season !!

(Tramel must have another job lined up, cuz it's fer sure the gooner fans and the Gaylord Mafia will be after him now)....

Just beacuse you can win the championship on playstation doesnt mean you are the expert play caller. Now Im not happy with the bowl losses either ever think that the Forida Tebow's were a better team overall? Now if you think Stoops and Wilson should be fired go ahead and say that an look like a idiot, or just shutup and go root for the pokes and there 4 5 loss seasons every year. An injuries and penalties have played a huge part this seasons losses if you think otherwise you are kidding yourself.
Brian, Tallahassee - Oct 8, 2009 at 12:40 pm
why not fire wilson? his playcallin has been 1 of the MAIN reasons we lost the last 3 games, despite the injuries& penalties! Look @ the gaytor, byu & miami games, all mirror images. wilson does nothin to break tendacies that defenders are coached to look for & know exactly what plays we are abOUt to run. No play action, no misdirection. OU has won on talent, but when talent is equal, that's where coachin comes into play & we have been OUtCOACHED the 3 OUtta the last 5 games! but hey, if y'all like it I love it!
Jiohdee, atlanta - Oct 8, 2009 at 12:23 pm
