October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and two celebrity breast cancer survivors are helping raise awareness.

Robin Roberts, co-host of ABC’s "Good Morning America,” diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007, on Friday hosted a Grand Ole Opry special promoting research about the disease. In it, singer Carrie Underwood ceremoniously flipped a switch that turned the Opry’s signature red backdrop pink.

Actress Christina Applegate, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2008 and has undergone a double mastectomy, appeared on October’s Woman’s Health Magazine, wearing a tank top with no bra, as her "big reveal” of her reconstructed breasts. The actress founded Right Action for Women, an organization that helps women who can’t afford them pay for mammograms.

Alex Woo, a New York jeweler, has designed a "tree of life” pendant to benefit Applegate’s foundation.

Also this month, National Football League players are wearing hot pink gear including gloves, towels and cleats as part of an campaign called "A Crucial Catch: Annual Screening Saves Lives.” The New York Times reported that the idea came from Carolina Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams, whose mother is in remission from breast cancer.
