Bread spread: Group could cover senior meal cuts

Health insurance companies have outrageous earnings while the working poor go uninsured. Let’s spread the wealth, eh?

Perhaps we should start with an organization that took in $1.08 billion in 2008.

Aetna? Humana? WellPoint?

No. The AARP, with a budget five times larger than that of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and a membership 10 times the size of the NRA’s.

For the year ended Dec. 31, 2008, the latest for which AARP provides data, the organization took in $249 million from dues and $120 million from ad revenues. But royalties from the products it hawks, mostly insurance, generated $653 million.

When news reports focus on suffering seniors, AARP leaders are among the loudest voices in demanding that government spend more. It’s happening now in Oklahoma in the wake of cuts to senior nutrition programs.

In 2005, syndicated columnist Robert J. Samuelson got "The Letter” from AARP inviting him to join. He declined, saying that AARP "has become America’s most dangerous lobby. If left unchecked, its agenda will plunder our children and grandchildren. Massive outlays for the elderly threaten huge tax increases and other government spending. Both may weaken the economy and the social fabric.”

AARP gets millions of dollars in federal grants. Perhaps that money could be redirected to senior nutrition programs. Better yet, why doesn’t AARP just cover the Oklahoma shortfall until conditions improve? The $7.4 million needed represents about 1 percent of what AARP takes in from royalties alone.

Spread the wealth, eh?

Gee, now that the Oklahoman mentions it, why don't they give that penny tax being given to their damn losing ball team up for senior meals. Yeah, how about that?

percy must be a carrier for the dok. maybe the dok should investigate. the editor said the AARP should pay for the shortfall, Percy. How did you not get that. Oh, the percy school of uneducated paper throwers.

I think we should put old people on an ice floe and set it adrift. Mom, climb on. It's like this dok, unlike the health insurance sharks gobbling an outrageous portion of our gdp for care that ranks just above Cuba at #37, AARP is a very popular organization that provides survices for its members and is an effective lobby for the elederly. You'd be screwed otherwise being elederly and living in a redneck God fearing place like Ok that'd vote down eyesight for the blind if it cost a nickel.

AARP lobby most dangerous lobby? Right. More dangerous than oil company lobbies meeting behind closed doors to set energy policy. More dangerous than insurance company lobbyiests spreading billions in bribes to stop health care reform. More dangerous than big bank lobbiests bribing regulators. More dangerous than KBR lobbying for no-bid billion dollar contracts. Yep, a lobbying group for the regular people is sure dangerous. It might actually help get health care passed for all citizens and not just the rich and affluent.

Only the DOK could figure it makes sense to tap a group with a yearly income of $1.08 billion to fund an $80 billion a year program. More of the Limbaugh School of Economics.

Besides, shouldn't a person ask how an organization (DOK) can advocate a business share its wealth, when their own business doesn't share its wealth with those on whose backs it profits, e.g. doesn't employ carriers, doesn't provide health insurance for those carriers, doesn't pay social security for those carriers, doesn't pay workmen's comp for those carriers, doesn't even pay those carriers a salary?

This sounds like a great idea. AARP is backing obamacare because it will realize huge profits from the insurance angle.
